Something in the way she moves,
Attracts me like no other lover,
Something in the way she woos me,
I don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe her now,
Somewhere in her smile she knows,
That I don't need no other lover,
Something in her style that shows me,
Don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe her now,
You're asking me will my love grow,
I don't know, I don't know,
You stick around now it may show,
I don't know, I don't know,
Something in the way she knows,
And all I have to do is think of her,
Something in the things she shows me,
Don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe her now.

The Woodhaven druggies have been dropping like flies for the past 10 years. Whenever some sentimental fool talks about the good old days of Woodhaven, I try to point out that a disproportionate percentage of the STA/PS 60/St. Elizabeth's classes from the 60s and 70s are dead before their time. And most of them didn't get run over by trucks while helping little old ladies cross Woodhaven Boulevard either.

I guess a movie theatre is not the best idea, in light of the Crossbay. But for the record I was often a part of the rowdy bunches that used to hang out on the St. Anthony's hallowed ground after dark. I still remember the profound disssapointment we would feel when one of the guards would somehow wake up, glance at his security monitors and do the unthinkable-climb up the stairs, walk outside and politely ask us to leave. How horrible. The kids have it much harder in Guiliani's NYC, of course.

It was really cold on Mt. Skellympus the other night. The Anti-Pooch just had to go for a walk at three "ayem". Naturally, I threw on my robe(over my Anti-Jammies) and slippers, and proceeded to leash the 'lil monster. You see, in the dark,in the woods,in the mountains of Colorado, there are much larger things lurking than the Anti-Pooch. One night, a crew of coyotes circled the Horror Hotel, and invited the Anti-Pooch to dinner( he was to be the main course). So, at night, I accompany him on his rectal rejuvination sessions...Lo and behold, after about ten seconds, I fully awoke, and it was 3 degrees below zero, and snowing lightly...My "gentles" are still blue...and, the Anti-Pooch is still laughing at me...It gets sooo cold up there, that you need sheep shears just to see your girlfriend's nipples...

Jim of Mineola---It is a shame that Micksterbrau wasn't available in that area at that time...you would have enjoyed it---it had the scent of a mule, and a kick like one, too. Some folks at A.S.S.L.O.G. (Laboratories of Gustatorials),during a double blind taste test, with placebos, actually bled from the eye sockets, while others simply crawled off to a dark corner, whimpering as they went,"why can't I burp ?" and "why has my weenis shrunk?"...A truly stout beverage, for the rugged individualist...

Anthony - I mentioned the idea of the Hillvelt Theatre yesterday to be built on the St. Anthony property. It could have been community owned if during the 1960's a 1 cent tax was added to the price of every glass of beer poured by the Jamaica Ave. bars. Let's see ... 200,000,000 beers times one penny equals $2,000,000 plus the interest for the last 40 years. Mmmm,a tidy sum to say the least.

Woodhaven welcomes new commerce, but only if it's a laundry place or drug store. How sick are we that we need a CVS, Genovese and Duane Reade within ten blocks? St. Anthony's coming down is a relief, but I don't know if the people living in the blocks nearby would like a movie theatre. Rowdy bunches till all hours may not be popular. Anybody see the two Crossbay movie theatres lately? Lewis' is nearly dead, so a K-Mart (there is one in Middle Village anyway) or Target (new one in the old Macy building on Queens Blvd) won't do that much harm. Kohl's or a Staples might be good. I guess it could be a strip mall with all that space. So that means a fast food place, a pizza and a Chinese food place. Would love to see a BlockBuster too.
Who am I kidding?
I'll be happy if the space just gets cleaned out!, USA - Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 11:34:24 (PST)

I think you could build a decent shopping center on the site of Saint Anthony's. Maybe a Barnes & Noble or Border's to anchor it, or a movie theatre. Woodhaven could use some new commerce. I'd hate to see a K-mart, Walmart or Target though. That would officialy kill Lewis'.

Today's Daily News reports that the demolition of Woodhaven's St. Anthony Hospital has begun. The building has been vacant for over 25 years except for a few Catholic Medical Center offices. Proposals are still being accepted for the future of the large Woodhaven Blvd. site, including senior housing ,a K-3rd grade school and a baseball field. How about rebuilding the Haven,Willard and Roosevelt theatres there to be called the Hillvelt and serve Krispy Kreeme donuts instead of popcorn?

Hope you all had a wonderful Thangsgiving Day. I am exhausted, but we all had a great time. Cooked for 9. Made Cornbread and Andoulle sausage stuffing, brandy and mashed sweet potatoe casserole cooked and served inside cleaned out orange halves, yellow squash and cheese casserole, chestnut stuffing for the bird and gravy made with a specially made turkey broth (chicken broth, carrotts, celery and the yucky chicken parts that you pull out of it's insides, drained and you use the broth), wine and a butter and flour roux that goes into the pan drippings. Mr. Marge and I cooked some, had our traditional champagne breakfast, watched the Macy's parade that I cry at the beginning and end of every year and were all ready for our guests at 5. Daughter-in-law brought homemade pumpkin pie and apple crisp. Kids made fresh whipped cream and they brought ice cream for the crisp. Had a wonderful red wine with dinner. And, the kids cleaned up, God Bless 'em! And, we gave thanks for being all together and had a moment of silence for those we have lost...whether family, friends and those we never knew. Had lunch Wed with my mom and sister. Hope you all had a great day as well.

Jim of Mineola, thank you so much for your great post about corporate layoffs. I think this is an important point because our President is currently proposing MASSIVE corporate tax reductions to the huge, multinational corporations that have made so many of these layoffs. (And by the way, gave the bulk of the 100$ million dollars that allowed W to run for the office without federal matching funds/the restrictions that come with them). Companies like GM, IBM, Exxon-Mobil are no longer AMERICAN companies. They are faceless, boundaryless gluttons. They have shown no loyalt to this country in a time of crisis and they will take these corporate rebates and go build factories in Brazil or dump oil on our national treasures. The American people have been wonderful in continuing to fly, travel and do everything possible to support the additional security requirements and financial burdens of the Post September 11th climate. Corporations have done nothing. Southwest Airlines is the only Airline I know of who bit the bullett and didn't lay off anyone under the guise of terrorist related slow down. Southwest deserves our businees, these other companies do not deserve our Treasury dollars.

I live near the light pollution capital of the world ( on Long Island) and was outside from 4:45 - 5:45 this morning and counted 124 meteorites.About 1/3 of them left a streak that lasted 2-3 seconds before disappearing. In order to block out as much street light ,I cornered myself in my yard between my house and some pine trees, limiting my angle of view.It stayed crystal clear all night, but we had no wind and 33 degrees. Lying on my hammock,I was glad a raccoon didn't decide to snuggle up to this strange man. Anyone else get up to see this great show?

Having been a New Yorker all my life ,until today I never realized how non-chalant we are. While I was walking on Park Ave. in mid-town an hour ago, along came a NYPD/Secret Service limo escort for some bigwig, possibly Russian President Putin. There was the usual 3-4 squad cars,3 Suburbans,2 limos and also a black van. This van had helmeted police in the front seat and the back doors were fully open, with 2 cops holding there rifles ready for any trouble. Many tourists looked on with their mouths wide open wide, but the average NY office worker didn't give a second glance, unless they felt that their cell phone was getting unwanted interference from this convoy. Only in NY.

Her husband was not a fireman or policeman, just a young guy not yet vested for a pension. I hope this change will help her. Please allow me to change this morning's great food subject to VENT for a minute. Today's papers tell us about 50,000 layoffs added to the list yesterday. Now I can understand if an airline's business is cut 50 %,or an automobile manufacturer has sales down 30%,but many of yesterday's announcements are nothing but CORPORATE GREED. These companies said they would make $4.77 a share this quarter, but when they realize the profit will only be $4.72 per share, the ax gets sharpened to layoff 5 or 10 thousand. Citigroup is laying off 7,800 to cut expenses due to them buying a Mexican bank for $12 billion. Chevron plans to layoff a total of 57,000 due to their merger with Texaco. President Bush tells us WE must fly and spend to keep the economy moving, but George if the middle class has no job, there is nothing to spend. I am a union member and have heard for years about how unions are hurting companies with their demands, but the vast majority of those now being laid off are non-union workers who have shown loyalty to a company many have worked for 10,20 or more years. When this happens ,how can corporate America ever expect loyalty from workers? THANK YOU for listening, now back to food.

..Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep
..I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
..The leftovers beckoned--the dark meat and white,
..But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
..Tossing and turning with anticipation,
..The thought of a snack became infatuation.
..So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
..And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
..I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
..Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
..I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
..'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
..I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
..With a mouthful of pudding and handful of pie,
..But, I managed to yell as I soured past the trees........
..Happy eating to all---pass the cranberries, please!
...........Happy Thanksgiving to all.............

TISH - Nice Thanksgiving memory story. I don't know if video games distraction will ruin it for the young kids today, but our generation will never forget 'Wooden Soldiers' showing on Thankgiving morning. My daughters are now 21 & 25,but they have memorized and still won't miss the holiday cartoons from Charlie Brown to Yukon Cornelius and the Land of Misfit Toys. I noticed that many of these shows are now available to buy on tape at Pathmark for less than $10.00. ANTI - Isn't it obvious that everyone's favorite Thanksgiving meal is that 'day after' sandwich of white breast meat on white bread with stuffing,etc,etc.,etc.and a few olives on the side. Don't forget the lemon meringue pie if any is left.

The American Red Cross, humbled by weeks of scathing criticism, announced today that it would use its $543 million Liberty Disaster Fund only to assist the people affected by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, a decision that guarantees families hundreds of millions of dollars in additional charitable aid.
"The people of this country have given the Red Cross their hard- earned dollars, their trust and very clear direction for our Sept. 11 relief efforts," said David T. McLaughlin, chairman of the agency's board of governors, at a news conference. "Regrettably, it took us too long to hear their message. Now we must change course to restore the faith of our donors and the trust of Americans."
As part of the changes announced today, the Red Cross will now cover a full year's worth of living expenses for the affected families — from the four terrorist-led airplane crashes at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and in western Pennsylvania — through its "family gift" cash- grant program, which was originally limited to three months of aid. That program, which has already distributed more than $47 million, will deliver an additional $111 million in cash gifts to families by January, the agency said.

For the traditionalists... Thanksgiving was a wonderful family holiday when I was a kid. I remember getting up very early (which may have been 15 minutes earlier than our usual dawn) and rushing downstairs to help get things ready. My Grandmother's birthday was a couple of days after Thanksgiving so she would arrive the night before to stay for a few days. No one can pay attention to a kid like a grandparent! We kids set the table and helped our Mom select what table linens and glasses were to be used. No one had to tell us twice to hurry up and get dressed because we were going to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade! Dad always took us so my Mom and my Grandmother would be able to function in the kitchen without us underfoot. Driving to the city in the icy cold morning was so special for us non-commuting kid types. Dad loved it because the city was absolutely empty everywhere we drove, except for the parade route. We would stay until the littlest kid could stand the cold no more. It was our first taste of seeing celebrities on the floats, and staring at the people who lived in Manhattan who seemed otherworldly than us. When we left, we usually went over to Rockefeller Center to buy a fresh picked box of Fanny Farmer chocolates for my Mom. By the time we got back, we missed a good chunk of March of the Wooden Soldiers but not enough to ruin tradition. In later years I remember weird movies in the late afternoon (monkey movies?) but we were usually busy enjoying the feast and celebrating my Grandmother's birthday. She's gone now, but every Thanksgiving has that double meaning for me. Enough time has gone by to celebrate her with old stories and attempting to recreate her old recipes than sad remembrances. These holidays in 2001 will be tough in the wake of the tragedies, but if we contribute to the victims it might be easier to bear for everyone involved. Find a charity you can trust and share some Thanksgiving with New York.

Jim of Mineola - Thanks for the Greenpoint web. There is an atricle on it explaining about that Thansksgiving tradition. My guess was correct, it sounded like it did originate there and just brought to Woodhaven with those oldtimers. I will pass it on to my Greenpoint cousins.

REENIE - Not to continue beating this dead horse, but I'm glad a third person remembers the Thanksgiving 'begging' tradition. My Mom said she is sure she has pictures of my brother and I making the rounds on Thanksgiving morning, about 1954,a year or two after we moved to 76 St. If your Grandfather came from Greenpoint, I'm sure you and your relatives would enjoy www.greenpt.com Have fun!

FLASHBACK - Thanksgiving Day - Woodhaven - 1950's - I have mentioned this "begging" tradtion to many people and they think I crazy. "It was probably Halloween and you don't remember". OK folks - I have picutes, dated by my mother. YOu never got candy, it was always fruit, right? - anyway maybe it actually started in Greenpoint, and the reason I say that is because of the other post mentioning they were originally from there. My Dad was born in Greenpoint, and my Grandfather moved his family (9 kids) to Woodhaven in 1914, he also brought with him his good friend who also bought a house on 88th AVe. with his family. I'm still best friends with "the friends" granddaughter. That is over 100 years of these two families being friends.) So maybe this "begging" came from Greenpoint. I know quite a few Woodhaven originals came out of Greenpoint. - Just a guess. Happy Thanksgiving all!! -

NEW YORK (AP) -- Carrie Donovan, the flamboyant fashion editor who embarked on a second career as a high-profile spokeswoman for Old Navy late in life, died Monday. She was 73.
Donovan died at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center. She had been ailing for several months, said George O'Brien, a friend.
Donovan's eye for trends and outgoing personality brought her success as a fashion journalist, first as a reporter for The New York Times and then as an editor for Vogue, Harper's Baazar and The New York Times Magazine.
With her trademark pearls and oversized black-rimmed glasses, Donovan was a one-of-a-kind fashionista. Her home on New York City's Upper East Side had red walls, red furnishings and leopard carpeting, and she sprinkled her speech with French phrases.

I was looking pretty svelt last April, early May when I was toning/simming down, but that guy who ran into my garage blew that right out of the water. I was downing those wines everynight for a few weeks and eating my little heart out. Lost the initiative. Been trying to get it back ever since. Need to hand that 1972 picture of myself in a bikini on the refridge, but not sure that will help. Probably just make me sick. You can't go back again. Oh, by the way, no double chins yet. Burp! KABUL: Music was broadcast over Kabul radio for the first time in five years on Tuesday after opposition forces captured the city from the hardline Islamic Taliban regime, residents said. They said the opposition's first broadcast since they marched into the city around dawn on Tuesday began with a prayer from the Koran, the Muslim holy book.
Before any official announcements were made, a song by popular exiled Afghan singer Farhad Darya drifted out over the airwaves.

KML85: You brought back some great memories of Thanksgiving. Earlier on we went to Grandma's in Brooklyn. She was Lithuanian and spoke very broken English. Before we moved from Brooklyn to Woodhaven in '54, I used to be able to converse with her in Lithuanian. I lost it after we moved. We had some old traditions we followed at the time. Always the Babka, browned, hardboiled eggs, and keilbasa (we pronounced keilbasie) that was home made by my Grandmother. And, Lithuanian black break, always. My Grandmother used to love to play a game with the eggs. We would all pick one, including my Grandmother, and we would all hit the pointed end with hers and try to break her egg. Son-of-a-gun, she always got the strongest one that never broke. We never knew how she did that, and she wasn't tellin'. Remembering getting home in the dark, the lights under the el were on and it was so deserted on the Avenue. I remember that special "quiet" of the Avenue on Sunday nights and holidays. When we began having Thanksgiving at our house, I remember hearing my mom in the kitchen at an ungodly hour, the smell of the turkey cooking, watching the parade and my dad getting the little bar ready that he would set up and his favorite nuts with a nut cracker. Grandma brought the eggs.

Jim of Mineola: What's all this about "dressing up on Thanksgiving"? Have I been out of Woodhaven that long? I guess since 1968 is long. We used to dress up in our Sunday best to go to Grandma's house, but that's all the dress up I did. Although, in 1966-67, when I worked at Macy's in their medical dept. in sr. year of H.S., I was almost one of Santa's helpers in the Macy's parade (the girl I was supposed to stand-in for got better that morning). Which, by the way, is still the best. Still have to watch it Thanksgiving morning. Sometimes Mr. Marge and I have a channel war because he wants to see the Philly parade. B o r i n g! Thanksgiving...let's see. watching "March of the Wooden Soldiers", then Grandmas house. We would always sing "Over the River and Through the Woods, to Grandmothers House We Go" and we kids thought it was so funny because we were driving about six blocks. At Grandmas on Thanksgiving, we got shrimp cocktail (ooh, how grown-up). And an appetizer of fruit cocktail with a scoop of sherbert on top. Then, after dinner, while the wimmenfolk cleaned up, the menfolk took the kidfolk for a walk down to Jamaica Avenue to see the lights lit for the first time that year. After sufficient "oohs and ahhs," it was back to Grandma's for pie. Good memories of good times.

Plane Crash in New York - (Yahoo! Finance Vision)
By DIEGO IBARGUEN, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - An American Airlines jetliner en route from New York to Santo Domingo crashed moments after takeoff Monday into a residential neighborhood five miles from Kennedy Airport, authorities said.
The plane, an Airbus A300, had a capacity of 275 people. There was no report of the number of casualties, either on the plane or on the ground, where several buildings were reported to be ablaze.
Thick, black smoke could be seen miles away from the crash in the Rockaways section of the borough of Queens.
John Maroney, 47, who lives on 129th Street near the site of the crash, said an engine from the plane dropped on a gas station near his house. ``The whole house jumped,'' he said.
``We were all out there with fire extinguishers and hoses but we couldn't do much,'' he said.
American Flight 587, a wide-bodied, twin-engine plane, crashed two minutes after it took off at 9:15 a.m.
Bill Schumann of the Federal Aviation Administration (news - web sites) said there was no immediate indication of what caused the crash.
There was no immediate indication that terrorism was to blame, but the Office of Emergency Management said all bridges and tunnels in the city were closed except to emergency vehicles.
All metro area airports were closed following the crash near Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue.
The mayor canceled his morning events and headed to the scene.
One eyewitness reported debris falling from sky, and told the Fox News Channel four homes were on fire.
Another told CNN he was 40 blocks away and saw ``Just a lot of smoke. Tons and tons of smoke. You can see emergency vehicles heading to area. Lots of people are standing in the streets. It's very tense.''
The crash came two months after the attack on the World Trade Center, which was destroyed by two Boeing 767s hijacked out of Boston's Logan Airport. One of the planes was operated by American, the other by United.
The airline told The Associated Press it had no immediate comment.
At the United Nations (news - web sites), where ministers from the 189 U.N. member states are gathered for the General Assembly, stunned diplomats stood in the corridors watching television screens as smoke rose from the crash site.
``Terrible,'' said U.N. Assistant Secretary of State Danilo Turk, shaking his head as he rushed into a meeting of foreign ministers from the United States, Russia and Afghanistan (news - web sites)'s six neighbors to discuss a post-Taliban government.
The crash site is a neighborhood of multi-family homes, three or four stories high, said Sanford Bernstein, general manager of a weekly Rockaways paper, The Wave.
Only a block or two from Jamaica Bay, the neighborhood includes a small shopping strip. A Roman Catholic church and elementary school are also nearby, he said. Schools were closed Monday for the Veterans Day holiday.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE
MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN
THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT
EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG
PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY
MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A
SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A
UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND
FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED
TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE
IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY
CORPS."
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I
CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE
COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO
WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY
ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
"This poem was written by a Marine stationed in
Okinawa Japan. The following is his request...
PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as
you can? REMINDING them to PRAY for our TROOPS... OUR NATION & IT'S
LEADERS!!! Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U. S.
service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.
Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people
stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for
us, BEGIN TO BE THANKFUL NOW... don't wait until THANKSGIVING TO COUNT YOUR
BLESSINGS OF FREEDOM!
Please, do your small part to plant this "small seed"

I mean the place was crawling with foreigners! Give me the sun and stagnant air of Shea any day! Also the fake SEZ is a two-bit horses ass with schizoid tendencies and real foul breath!

Sez or Sez Imposter. Hmm, A World Series under it's belt and a large, growing market? Sounds like the 1997 Florida Marlins to me. (And I did allude to them in my original post). For the Record the Phoenix Metropolitan Area is the 15th largest in the country and Miami is the 12th. (City size is misleading because TV revenues and to a lesser extent gate attendance are driven by the Metropolitan area more than Municipal Boundaries. For example, San Antonio is the 8th most populous city in the United States, but the smallest market in the NBA.) There is one advantage that the Snakes have over the Fish. A new stadium. Maybe next year they will even be able to sell out their Divisional Series games, in light of the 2001 success. But long term, I'm worried because they are already in hock on paying off those deferred payments that the players agreed to this year. It is the Marlins' model. Build a team for one year, win a Championship and then scorch the earth. I guess it's a good thing they Play in "Phoenix".

dramatic though, when predicting, for the most part
the doom of the D-Backs organization. While it might
be more difficult for the D-Backs to compete every year,
i'm pretty sure that they will maintain a healthy franchise.
If they don't, it doesn't bode well for the whole of
Major League Baseball, that a healthy franchise, with
a W.S. under it's belt, 6th largest population in country,
etc. etc. can't stay afloat. The whole discussion will
probably be rendered moot though, when we have the next
walkout, closeout, strike, whatever you want to call it,
when the Billionaires, fight with the Millionaires in a
few months, the end result being that we end up paying
a dollar more for warm beer and cold hot dogs! This time,

Didn't mean to spit in everybody's Cornflakes. My comments did acknowledge that the Diamonbacks were the better team after all. I was just commenting on the economic reality of the Arizona franchise. Many of their best players (Schilling, Grace and about a half dozen others) took deferred payment just so the owner could make ends meet and fill a missing hole or two on the roster. They didn't even sell out their opening round playoff games. It's not sour grapes to point out that they will have a hard time being sucessful in the long run. I happen to be a true baseball fan, and I hate to see what is happening to the sport. Two cities are about to lose their teams because of financial irresponsiblity/the economic realities of trying to compete from the 25th or so biggest market in North America. After all the Montreal Art Museum isn't expected to outdo the Met. But the Expos are supposed to play against the Mets with very little NFL style revenue sharing plan? That's comical. After all, no one is talking about Contracting the Green Bay Packers, and their city has roughly the population of Woodhaven and Ozone Park. The better team won and they impressed me with both their performance and their resolve. But let's hope Jerry Colangelo is an economic wizard, because most likely they will strugle to win 70 games a year down the road.

Back when I was a youngin' - a few days before Thanksgiving - the Christmas lights, stars and bells would be strung across Jamaica Avenue. At 10:00 p.m. Thanksgiving night, those lights would be lit for the first time of the season. The next day was the official beginning of Christmas shopping and the holiday season. The only place in New York that did it differently, was MACY*S in Herald Square. The moment the parade ended, which is when Santa Claus reached 34th Street, the doors to the store would open to the regular public and Christmas shopping (with big sales) would commence. The Christmas lights under the El on Jamaica Avenue have been hanging, and lit, for two weeks. I saw Christmas decoration displays (with decorated trees!) before Halloween!
Screwy, ain't it?

Good morning #1 Curious - Without seeing your name I knew who the first message was from because your shift key is broken or missing. Capitals are just a big pain anyway. YANKEE FANS who wondered why every New Yorker didn't root for them this year, can get their answer by reading Bob Raissman's column in today's Daily News. George Steinbrenner has signed a contract with WCBS-2 that a max of only 25 Yankee games a year will be shown on 'free' TV. This will help a whole generation of NY kids whose parents can't afford Cable to lose interest in baseball. More important though is that George guarantees he will make about 9 trillion this year in cable rights and ads, instead of being happy with a paultry 7 or 8 trillion. This is one one the reasons millions still hate the Yankees. He and Rudy G should run away with each other and take their 'my way or the highway' attitude on the road.

What would Brian Boitano do
If he was here right now,
He'd make a plan
And he'd follow through,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.
When Brian Boitano was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.
When Brian Boitano was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.
So what would Brian Boitano do
If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd kick an ass or two,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.
I want this V-chip out of me,
It has stunted my vo-ca-bu-lar-y.
And I just want my mom
To stop fighting everyone
For Wendy I'll be an activist, too,
Cos that's what Brian Boitano would do.
And what would Brian Boitano do,
He'd call all the kids in town,
And tell them to unite for true
That's what Brian Boitano would do.
When Brian Boitano travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
and saved the human race again
And when Brian Boitano built the pyramids,
He beat up Kubela Kong.
Cos Brian Boitano doesn't take shit from an-e-y-body
So lets all get together,
And unite to stop our mom's
And we'll save Terrance and Phillip too,
Cos that's what Brian Boitano do.
And we'll save Terrance and Phillip too,
Cos that's what Brian Boitano dooooo,
That's what Brian Boitano do.

It was a great series and the better team won, unfortunately. I kind of hate all this talk about the end of the dynasty though. Let's face it, the Yanks are the odds on favorites to tak it next year and 4 or 5 years from now the Diamonbacks are going to be broke, playing in an empty stadium and worrying about contraction. You think I'm kidding? Remember the last non-Yankees team to win a World Series.

contemporary R and R most of the time, and while I think
it is quite different from R and R from our day, it's
pretty good. Dave Matthews, Red Hot Chile Peppers, Pearl
Jam. That stuff stands up anywhere. Having said all that
there is only one Led Zeppelin, Dylan, and Neil Young!
They head a short list.

SEZ-No Jim Rome to my knowledge on NY radio. I think he's on Fox radio and we were just lucky (?) enough to get ESPN radio in the last 2 months. By the way how is the rest of radio in Phoenix? I know the oldies station actuall has the call letters KOOL but are the any bargain? Classic rock? What are your personal favorites, or does it all blow?.

SEZ-Aren't you aware that the Mets already possess the crown jewel of relievers, Armando (Army) Benitez? In other words they already have someone to blow big games. No matter what, the Dbacks fans will let him off the hook, unlike if he were pitching in for the Mets or Phillies where the boos would be deafening forever.

Anti-Skell - Yes i'm a 30 yr Yankee fan, but i've been
pulling for the D-Backs this series for a few different
reasons, that I don't feel are treasoness (spelling?].
Yes the Yanks won it on the field, but that doesn't make
Brenly's move any less wrong. There is something to be
said for getting right back on the horse that bucked you,
but that's for games in July, not the 5th game of the
W.S. There's also something to be said for considering
the long term for this kid. If his career wasn't shot
after Wed's game, it's sure as hell shot now!

Get this season over with. It's time to start the Hot Stove (or radiator) league! Time to find the missing parts to make the Mets a true contender. Remember Yankee fans: If your team wins (and they probably will), the season is over with the last out and it's on to next season!

Brenly should be shot - Manager of the year to dummy
of the year. Don't care what some may say about
hindsight being 20-20, that doesn't make what Brenly
did any smarter. Gen. Santyana said "Those who don't
remember history, are bound to repeat it". Guess Bob
never heard that. Worst managing move i've seen in

$70 billion for GM, GE, IBM, Enron:
It's profiteering in the name of patriotism.
In the days after the tragedy of September 11, while the families of firefighters and policemen were attending funerals -- and the President was calling for prayers and sacrifice -- lobbyists for GM, GE, IBM, Enron and other Fortune 500 companies were quietly approaching their friends in Congress. Their wish list: tax cuts and special favors for corporations that could total $70 billion a year -- and lower taxes for the wealthiest Americans. Last week, the House of Representatives passed this bill that gave them most of what they wanted. The Senate will vote this week or next on a version of the "economic stimulus" bill passed by the House. Most Americans who get the facts oppose this giveaway to the corporations under the guise of helping the economy.
The so-called "economic stimulus" bill passed by the House repeals the alternative minimum tax, which requires hugely profitable corporations to pay at least some tax, no matter how many loopholes they can exploit. But get this: the repeal isn't just for next year to stimulate the economy, it's RETROACTIVE FOR 15 YEARS! So IBM will get $1.4 billion, GM $833 million, GE $671 million, etc. Guess what you get!
The House also voted to let corporations hide their profits overseas as tax shelters -- actually taking money out of our economy!
The right approach to stimulate the economy is to put money into the hands of the working people who need it most - and are most likely to spend it now. That means money for decent unemployment benefits and health insurance to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their jobs or been displaced since September 11.
We can't allow the profiteers to win permanent tax breaks by exploiting our national emergency, grabbing now what they could not get through open political debate in peacetime. Helping people makes economic sense. Giving billions in tax breaks to America's biggest corporations doesn't.
