Mickey Mouse was born in Walt Disney's imagination early in 1928 on a train ride from New York to Los Angeles. Walt was returning with his wife from a business meeting at which his cartoon creation, Oswald the Rabbit, had been wrestled from him by his financial backers. Only 26 at the time and with an active cartoon studio in Hollywood, Walt had gone east to arrange for a new contract and more money to improve the quality of his Oswald pictures. The moneymen declined, and since the character was copyrighted under their name, they took control of it. " . . . So I was all alone and had nothing," Walt recalled later. "Mrs. Disney and I were coming back from New York on the train and I had to have something I could tell them. I've lost Oswald so, I had this mouse in the back of my head because a mouse is sort of a sympathetic character in spite of the fact that everybody's frightened of a mouse including myself" Walt spent the return train ride conjuring up a little mouse in red velvet pants and named him "Mortimer," but by the time the train screeched into the terminal station in Los Angeles, the new dream mouse had been rechristened. Walt's wife, Lillian, thought the name "Mortimer" was too pompous and suggested "Mickey." A star was born!

Anti-Skell: If there was anything worthwhile joining in, I'd be here. But, this is all not my cup of vodka (gimlets that is). Our garage perpetrater is not going to jail because we accepted a deal of some cash restitution instead. So he did not have to go to jail for 30 days, however, for the 2 counts (wreckless endangerment and trespassing with a vehicle) he got 275 days of probation (consecutive sentences), 30 days with an electronic thingy, must go to AA and rehab and has to pay the restituion within 12 mos. or go to jail. At sentencing, I requested that I be allowed to tell my story and get the incident off paper and put some emotion back into it. The Judge was really great and let me tell the whole thing. She listened with much interest. Also, 3 times during my tale, I spoke directly to the guy. Once to say that I hoped he was really scared because it's nothing compared to how much he scared me and that I'm petrified to be alone at night now. Second to say that I noticed he had some scars on his face and I said good. You should look in the mirror every day and remember what you did and that you almost killed me. And, thirdly, at the end I said that no sentencing is going to make a difference here. Only he himself can do that. Let me tell you, without any acting, I was great, tears and all. It was all genuine emotion. While the restitution is only about one third of how much we are out, counting insurance coverage, we may not see a cent of it because our insurance company is suing both him and his mother since he was driving her Land Rover at the time. We agreed with our ins. co that we wouldn't do anything to mess them up. They were excellent with us during the whole ordeal. It's still in the negotiating process. Thanks for asking.

John Of Florida - Welcome and we hope you can add some memories and sanity to this site. I am Jim Beck and graduated from St. Thomas Apostle in 1960. If you could give us an idea of your age ,there are many here who might be able to help you track down classmates, as Woodhaven had so many families with 4 + kids or had cousins in the Woodhaven/OZ area. Drop us a few memories from Friendly Frost, Whitting Square or Dotties Diner. Check out a great site www.forgotten-ny.com which has several local links. To those of you who think I dropped off the planet, no such luck , just my wife and I took a wonderful anniversary trip to Lake Tahoe and San Francisco.

Spider-man was fantastic, even with the artistic license. Forest Hills HS for example is called "Midtown" (If you look closely at the graduation banner.) Did anyone stay to the end of the credits? If you did, you got to hear the old Saturday morning version of his theme song: "Spider-man, Spider-man! He can do everything a Spider can!" And I did like the fact that he lived on a block that might as well have been Woodhaven. All these Queens reference made me wonder if there is any connection to last year's big Spider phenomenon-Spider Stumbled.

While everyone was at the Derby in their "Finery", the little people here in the Bluegrass state went to see "spiderman". It was definitely a winner!! It was even fun to hear the words "Woodhaven Blvd." mentioned. I can remember chasing a Public bus down Woodhaven in order to get to 210!

I believe Spider-Man is from Forest Hills. They do mention Woodhaven Blvd. in the movie, though. Then they showed a scene taken by Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside. Artistic license, I think they call it.
