They weren't watching the Oscars, but it wasn't long
before Ada and Thomas Zarobinski heard that the best-actor winner mentioned their
son, a U.S. soldier stationed in Kuwait, in his acceptance speech. The Queens
couple was listening to news of the war in Iraq when a neighbor told them that
Adrien Brody, who received the award for playing a Holocaust survivor in "The
Pianist," ended his remarks with a goodwill message for Tommy Zarobinski. "There
are feelings of both happiness and sadness," Ada Zarobinski told Newsday in Tuesday's
editions. "Because I wish my son was here to see Adrien's success." Brody was
given a standing ovation for his emotional speech, in which he exhorted the audience
to "pray for a peaceful and swift resolution" to the war. "And I have a friend
from Queens who's a soldier in Kuwait right now, Tommy Zarobinski, and I hope
you and your boys make it back real soon," he said. Brody, who grew up in WOODHAVEN,
and Zarobinski, a native of Rego Park, attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High
School for Performing Arts together, where Brody studied acting and Zarobinski
studied drawing. The two, who grew up like brothers, "would cut school together
and do all sorts of pranks -- just like regular kids," said Thomas Zarobinski
Sr. "Here he is making the Oscars for the first time in his life, and he's talking
about my son," Zarobinski told the Daily News. "That's amazing." Tommy Zarobinski,
31, joined the Army National Guard in 1996 and has been stationed in Kuwait since
November, Newsday said.

Cheking the stats ... in 1954 Bob Grim won AL Rookie
with Jim Finigan second and Al Kaline third. Same year ,Wally Moon won the NL
Rookie award ,with Ernie Banks ,Gene Conely and some kid named Hank Aaron following
in the votes. Also Bob Grim was born in 1930 , so his Lane graduation was probably
in 47 or 48.
Jimineola
USA - Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 03:50:21 (GMT)
LOIS - Bob Grim attended Lane (graduated around 1950)and
my Dad was his baseball manager when he played for Havenwood A.C. ,a local team
that played it's home games at Lane's field. Bob, a pitcher, went on to play for
the N Y Yankees and I think in 1955 was named AL rookie of the year. After 2 or
3 very good years , his arm broke down and the next 3 poor years ended his career.
He passed away about 4 years ago. SEZ - Sam Levinson was also known as a fill-in
panelist on 1950's game shows , such as What's My Line and I've Got a Secret.

Subject: Fw: Cocktail Party At a cocktail reception,
a friend found himself in a small group that included an admiral from each of
the US and French Navy's. The French admiral started complaining that whereas
Europeans learned many languages, Americans only learned English. He then asked.
"Why is it that we have to speak English in these conferences rather than you
have to speak French?" Without even hesitating, the American admiral replied.
"Maybe it is because we arranged it so that you did not have to learn to speak
German." The group became silent.

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world
at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person
which almost went unnoticed last week: Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The
Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family
was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in --- and then the trouble
started ....

Ya Know when u gotta take time to explain a simple
reference like songwriters being heroes it's time to ask yourself "Is it really
worth my time" But here goes: Some people think of sports figures as heroes (there
own personal heroes). They look up to these people and I guess mistake them for
heroes, as do other people, look up to people in the arts in the same way. Movie
stars, rock stars, etc etc. Of course these people aren't really heroes compared
to the like of Audie Murphy, Patton, MacArthur, but that's just part of the general
lexicon. From now on i'll reserve heroe status to the like of Zeus, Hercules and
the other mythilogical figures referenced in the post that ridiculed my words.
I just wish poster good luck in finding a life, 'cause he clearly doesn't have
one if he can spend time finding something wrong with a simple little concept
like that. KEERIST!

live performer and to put on a great show. As a golfer would put it "He leaves
nothing in the bag". You more than likely will not be dissapointed! You will also

89-40 87th Street, USA - Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at 15:14:55 (GMT)
Residents of Woodhaven, Queens, say their neighborhood
will not be safe if the city drops its budget ax on Engine Company 293. “I live
right down the block,” said Stephen Klein, one of about 100 residents at a rally
outside the station Saturday. “If they close this fire station, God forbid something
happens. I could lose my house and my family. This something we can't risk.” Engine
Company 293 is one of eight firehouses slated to close as the city tries to save
money. Many demonstrators said the mayor should make their lives the priority,
not dollars and cents. “We can't afford to lose this station,” another protestor,
Joe Lentini. “We have too many schools, too many churches, and I don't want anything
to happen to my kids.” Earlier this month, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller
introduced a plan for corporate sponsorships that he says would save all eight
fire stations. Mayor Michael Bloomberg dismissed the idea as a publicity stunt
that won't work, but other councilmembers feel it should be given a chance. “Corporate
sponsorship is something that should not be frowned upon if it means saving the
firehouse,” said Queens Councilman Joseph Addabbo, who attended Saturday’s rally.
Other stations would cover the Woodhaven neighborhood if its firehouse closes,
but many say the other engine companies would take too long to get to their wood-framed
homes in an emergency. “Fires increase in intensity 100 percent every minute,”
said one protestor. “So the longer that you take to get to a fire, the more damaging
that fire is going to be.” Residents are worried that a fire could totally devastate
the neighborhood if firefighters take longer to respond. Many of the houses are
attached, and they're over 100 years old. “I am very concerned for the welfare
of this area, because it's a very old neighborhood,” said resident Virginia Hennessy.
“It's a very densely-populated neighborhood.” “There have been so many fires in
the neighborhood that we've never seen before,” said another resident, Leticia
Lee. “I don't know what the difference is, but all of a sudden there are so many
fires. So we really need to know that we have them here. We'll feel a lot safer
knowing their around.”

Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, who earlier in
the day had lashed out at President Bush, saying he had "failed so miserably"
at diplomacy in the crisis with Iraq that the United States now stands on the
brink of war, issued a statement after Bush's televised address assuring the president
of congressional unity. "If the President decides that force is the only remaining
option to disarm Saddam Hussein, Democrats and Republicans will be unanimous in
our strong support for our troops and for ensuring that they have all the tools
and resources needed to be successful," said the statement from Daschle, a South
Dakota Democrat.

Just finished watching the TVLand award show so I
had to add my two cents. Lee Majors looked bad for Lee Majors but not that bad
for 65 yrs old and alot better then Farrah at 56.. David Cassidy looked great
for 53 or any age and just like his dad Jack. Did you all know that Jack Cassidy
was born in Richmond Hill? Dihanne Carroll and Barbara Eden both looked great
for old ladies pushing 70. By far I thought the person who should have won for
looking the best for his age was Dick Van Dyke at 78, he must be one of the few
people that pickeling worked. William Shatner looked better then I have seen him
look in many years. Do you think this show just existed so we call all see what

One day in March of 1963, Phil Spector went up to
Aaron Schroeder’s office. He and Schroeder were friends from the days when Spector
was producing Gene Pitney; Schroeder owned Musicor Records, Pitney’s label, and
he and Pitney were songwriting partners. Schroeder also owned a music publishing
firm whose staff included Wally Gold, co-writer of Elvis’ biggest hit ever, “It’s
Now or Never.” Spector knew that Schroeder’s firm was a reliable source of good
material and he often visited, looking for songs for the girl groups on his new
Philles label. On this particular visit, Phil heard a demo of a song that Wally
had written with John Gluck and Herb Weiner, called “It’s My Party.” Wally Gold
remembers: “He said, ‘Great, I love it. I’m gonna do it with the Crystals.’ We
were really excited, because that would ensure that the record was #l!” Phil left
with the demo, not knowing that others had already heard it before him. It was
a common practice among music publishers to send out demos to many labels and
producers, as long as the song hadn’t been written for a specific artist. Once
it was accepted by someone, the publisher would put a “freeze” on the song and
notify others in the business that it was going to be recorded. This sort of gentlemen’s
agreement worked amazingly well. But it had lapses. Like in this case. Unknown
to Spector -- and everyone in Schroeder’s office -- someone else had already chosen
the song for her first record -- singer Lesley Gore. Discovered and produced by
Quincy Jones, Lesley recorded the song at the end of March. In February, a month
before, Quincy went to Lesley’s home in Tenafly, New Jersey, armed with a stack
of demos. LESLEY GORE: “Quincy and I sat down and we listened to about two or
three hundred demonstration records after we’d decided to go in and record, and
‘It’s My Party’ was among the songs we listened to. We both liked it and both
decided we’d record it.” Meanwhile, Phil Spector was building a typical “Wall
of Sound” production for “It’s My Party.” WALLY GOLD: “As Phil always did, it
took him forever to make a record. If you remember, he just laid sound on sound.
It really took a long time for him to finish a single. So he cut the tracks to
‘It’s My Party’ and he’s in the middle of doing it when Aaron gets a call from
Quincy Jones, from his office right across the street at 745 Fifth Avenue. Quincy
says, ‘Aaron, you’ve got to run over. I just recorded your song.’ Aaron sort of
turned a little pale at the time, because he knew Phil was working on it, making
a hell of a record, and it was almost done.” Schroeder hung up and told Wally,
“I’ve gotta kill that record. Phil will really get upset.” Aaron went over to
hear it and returned, according to Wally, “looking even sicker than he did when
he got the call.” What he’d heard, to his mind, couldn’t compare with what Spector
was planning. Lesley was a new artist, and the song had been done in a real “formula”
style. Nonetheless, Quincy was determined to release it over Aaron’s protests.
In fact, Mercury got wind of Spector’s version, and they rushed Quincy’s out even
sooner than they’d originally planned, in test pressings! And what scalawag told
Mercury about Phil Spector’s version? Phil Spector! Quincy Jones: “I remember
we cut the record on a Saturday, and I went by to see Charles Aznavour, who I’d
worked with in Paris, that night, and I saw Spector getting out of a car. . .
He told me [about the record]. . . so we went and put it out on Monday!” Lesley
Gore was totally unprepared for how fast everything happened from there. Six days
after cutting “It’s My Party,” she heard it on the radio. She thought that making
records would be a temporary thing, and was planning to go on to school, but it
took only four weeks for her song to become #1 -- and for Lesley to become a full-time
singer. Phil Spector and his unfinished masterpiece, meanwhile, were left in the
dust. Wally Gold: “I don’t think Phil ever came to the office again.” Lesley won't get a penny

This guy was no CIA brainwashing expert , yet it seems like she made no escape

While it was fun seeing exerpts from the old shows, the categories were a little

I'm watching the noontime news story talking about
today's sleet and snowfall as the top story. Every vehicle accident they are covering
concerns idiots who smashed up their SUV. When will dealerships make SUV buyers
read and sign a statement telling them 4 wheel drive is great when traveling in
snow of 10" or more depth, but that a Jeep or like vehicle does not make that
driver "Superman" on ice or light snow as too many seem to think?

Francois, My grandmother was born in Antwerp, 1800's,
and her father's name was Francois. How about that!! I was born and raised in
Woodhaven. How did you find this site? There is a Woodhaven Cultural & Historical
Society, Inc. 9334 - 91st Ave., Woodhaven NY, 11421-2739 Phone # (718)846-1907.
Some counties have web pages where you can get info., or try Queens County or
QueensCounty Courthouse .org as a web address, or "public records" Some one can
correct me about this please. Is Queens actually "Kings County" - So instead the
address would be KingsCountyCourthouse.org. - Good luck. Hope this is of some
help.

train-wreck of thought but I will give you a minute of my time. You've finally
made some sense! New Yorkers ARE minorities! I'm sure you've checked the latest
demographics but let me be redundant. Most people residing in the 5 boros are
no longer white christians; they are blacks, hispanics, asians, and jews. The
white christians have fled to paler environs, the only exception being the staten
island italians, but that is a topic for another time. As for the two has-been
and one deceased entertainer whose names you have purposely mis-spelled(no one
is that ignorant), why choose them? As for whom I would rather my sister marry
you're right, given the above options.

Mary- I'm sorry to have kept you hanging, I didn't
think anyone was interested. In 1994 St. Josephs's College in Rensselaer, Indiana(Hodges'
alma mater) named their new field "The Gil Hodges Memorial Field" and his son
Gil Jr. was there to dedicate it. Hodges father's name was Charlie Hodge not Hodges
and he was a coal miner. Gil Jr. played in the minors and his roommate was, believe
it or not, Ron Hodges. I originally posed those questions because someone purported
themselves to be Gil Jr.
