For all you Dave Matthews Band lovers...Have I got story for you. My neice is
17 and a friend got her surprise tickets to their concert as a belated BD present.
The tickets were in the Members Only section. A guy comes up to them while they
were eating and starts talking to them and they tried to shoo them away. Then
my neice noticed he was wearing a tee shirt that said, "Dave Matthews Band" on
it. Well, it turns out that they won some contest and were put in seats right
in the front row. Towards the end of the show, they were lifting her up to the
stage and the guitar player gave her his guitar pick. She is ready to frame it
and is the envy of all her friends. While she was there she called my sister so
she could hear the music. Then she called her when she got out of the concert
and was flying on air. What a great thrill for those kids. Eat your hearts out
DMB lovers.

Wow, Manor Deli. Always remember going in there with Grandma, who lived on 94th
Street. You could eat off the floor in that place. My dad complains about potato
salad all the time, says you can never find any like Woodhaven sold. He says all
the Woodhaven delis sliced their potatoes really thin, and now all potato salad
is chunky. What, did one of the old Germans in Manor die and let one of those
"boys in hats" start making decisions?

Another restaurant review...."Eat This",the restaurant owned and operated by the
(in)famous Anti-Skell,has recieved a four grenade rating from the Macedonian League
of Displaced Women Guerilla Fighters. The cuisine,is a hearty mix of Indo/Europa,
Pan/Croat,Gypsy/Slovenly Slav,and cheeseburger-pepsi type Greek/Dirty Guinea.
It also has an extensive menu selection of smelly, beany stuff, with a kick not
unlike that of a savage mule...The wait staff, while generally unkempt, does bathe
occaisionally, giving the establishment a Twilight Zone Diner feel.Prices, well,
we don't have to discuss that now.Entertainment is provided nightly by the equally

Vegetarians may have a lower risk of heart disease and bowel cancer than meat
and fish eaters because of an acid found in fruit and vegetables, Scottish scientists
said on Thursday. Like people taking low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attacks
vegetarians have lots of salicylic acid, aspirin's main anti-inflammatory component,
in their blood. Dr. John Paterson, a chemical pathologist at the Dumfries and
Galloway Royal Infirmary in Scotland believes salicylic acid could protect vegetarians
from heart disease and cancer just as it protects people taking aspirin. ``Studies
have shown that if you eat fruits and vegetables you have a lower risk of heart
disease, strokes and cancer. Part of the reason to explain that lower risk could
be salicylic acid,'' Paterson said in a telephone interview. There may be other
compounds that also help, he added, but none of them have been proven to have
this impact. Paterson and his team developed a method to measure the levels of
salicylic acid in blood. They compared levels in 37 vegetarian Buddhist monks,
39 meat and fish eaters and 14 diabetes patients taking low-dose aspirin. Their
research is published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology. The researchers discovered
that vegetarians had levels of salicylic acid 12 times higher than the meat and
fish eaters, but lower than the diabetics taking 75 mg of aspirin a day. ``These
findings may explain in part the health promoting effects of dietary fruits and
vegetables,'' the researchers said in the journal. Paterson said fruits and vegetables
did not have the anti-clotting properties of aspirin but the salicylic acid reduced
inflammation. They believe it is beneficial because heart disease is caused by
a narrowing and hardening of the arteries, which is a chronic inflammatory disease
process. Even low levels of dietary salicylic acid may interfere with enzymes
that increase inflammation, which could also explain why a diet high in fruits
and vegetables may protect against bowel cancer. Many fruits and vegetables contain
salicylic acid but the scientists said herbs and spices have the greatest concentrations.

"mild". The duck tamarind is awesome - worth checking out. Note about Manor Deli:
I think this was mentioned, they CHANGED the potato salad recipe! Why!? It is
close but different and the strangest thing is I am usually asked to bring their
salads when I visit ex-Woodhaveners and everyone face drops when they taste the
stuff. Whatever they did is sooo noticeable. Skellington: Don't know if I will

The saddest thing has happened... One of America’s best loved actors, Jack Lemmon,
whose talents ranged from the adroit comedy of “The Apartment” and “Some Like
It Hot” to the dramatic intensity of “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Tuesdays with
Morrie,” has died at the age of 76. He won a clutch of awards including two Oscars,
an Emmy, the Golden Globes and the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award
in a career spanning more than 50 years. LEMMON DIED Wednesday at about 10 p.m.
from complications related to cancer, said longtime spokesman Warren Cowan. His
wife, Felicia and two of his children were at his bedside at USC/Norris Cancer
Clinic, Cowan said. “He is one of the greatest actors in the history of the business,”
Cowan said. “To say one word about him would be beautiful. It’s an opinion that
is shared by everybody who knew him.”

me to face. I climb way up to the top of the stairs, and all my cares just drift
right into space. On the roof's it's peaceful as can be. And there the world below
can't bother me. Let me tell you now, when I come home feeling tired and weak

all that rat race noise down in the street. On the roof's the only place I know.
Where you just have to wish to make it so...let's go, up on the roof. At night
the stars put on a show for free. And darlin' you can share it all with me. I
keep a tellin' you, right smack dab in the middle of town, I found a paradise

The other day at the 179th Street Subway stop in Jamaica on my way to the parking
lot to pick up my car, I came upon none other than "Henry". He was wandering aimlessly
along Hillside Avenue. I didn't notice him at first. He noticed me and approached
me. After some aimless chatter, he walked away. It was then that I noticed how
old he had gotten or maybe just how old that I had gotten. I don't write on this
site but I read often. I just thought that some of us would like to know that
Henry is still wandering the streets, hopefully under the watchful eye of our
Creator.

For you chow hounds out there, the Sat night fare for dinner guests was...for
appetizers down by the pool, toasted pita wedges coated with melted butter and
minced garlic for the bruchetta I made. Also, a dish of olive oil with red pepper
flakes, salt and basil with a great bread for dipping. Also, Mr. Marge made wonderful
quacamole (sp?). Dinner...Salmon on the grill, served with pesto on it, rice cooked
in chicken broth and lemon rind and served with grated lemon rind on top, and
zuchini, yellow squash, carrots, onions with olive oil, sea salt and seasonsings
sprinkled over, wrapped in foil and steamed on the grill. Desert was peach cobbler,
served with peach ice cream. We had lots of wine, and after dinner drinks of nuts
and berries and cream for the ladies and single malt scotch for the guys. We had
a great evening. The first normal weekend since the crash. Spent yesterday riding
our new bikes and sitting by the pool finishing off the bruchetta and quacamole.

day and LOVE to play. It's all precious when you don't take it for granted. We
go to Vermont (our own time share) in a couple of weeks with our girl and our
nephew (they are best buddies). Our week in August is still under discussion.
Haven't been to the Keys in a million years but it all sounds good to me. The
weekends in between will cover camping in the woods (our first time - say prayers!),
two weekends at our pals beach house in NJ, and a trip to Rhode Island to tour
Newport and those great beaches and one family reunion. If there is a single minute
left - believe me we will make plans. This summer's new sport is kayaking so we
will see where that takes us. Our girl is a real nature lover and giggle pot.
Whatever we do is fun with her. Mr.Tish and I are on our own this weekend but

Post partum and bi-polar! How could it have happened? Individual choice, good
intentions from a twisted mind, perhaps Catholisism. There wasn't enough medication
for that woman and those close to her weren't strong enough to step in. The terror
those kids felt! Especially the oldest who was chased. I was so deeply sad when
I read that story, as I was for the firemen that died. I feel terribly for that
13 year old that was playing and accidentally knocked over the can that caused
the fire. He is beside himself and he has a long life to go. Some weeks it just
brings you down, and its harder to understand why these losses happen. Where's

Curious, LOVE when you get into it! Agree that drugs is drugs is drugs - legal
or otherwise. We have more activism now, so you will forever see more lawsuits.
Don't get me started on all the interest groups that REALLY run this country!
As for Carrol, that poor man could never deal with his son's death, but concentrated
on bringing info to others as a last valentine to him. His son had genetic weaknesses,
and yes, we are all responsible for ourselves. But the similarity is that both
corporations, tobacco and drugs - government approved or not - are insidious pushers
remains. Their greatest success is preying on the masses, who are too dim to catch
on. As for Entenmanns - IT WAS A JOKE! But I'll start doing laps tonight anyway.

in moderation and still maintain health, yet cigarettes are so addictive, that
most people can't stay at just a few..... but i really think that if people just
took better care of themselves and exercised more, then we would not need to have
the HMO's and drug companies get rich off the fat and unhealthy people that need
50 different meds by the time they hit 60. i don't want the government to pay
for everybody's meds, i want people to take better care of themselves. sorry-

i think people are right in suing the cigarette companies because they knew that
what they were selling were deadly- and they admit to putting in more and more
addictive substances. the only reason this country took a turn on the butt companies
is because the health industry started losing money because of all the sick and
dying smokers....before that, the gov't endorsed the cigarette companies, and
they all reaped the profits!! i think that as long as drugs are illegal, you are
on your own and can hold no one else but yourself responsible for your destructive
behavior. i don't think caroll o'connor could accept that fact that his son was
an addict, and he had to place blame to someone other than his son.

Families are suing cigarette companies in class action lawsuits and otherwise,
for the addictive and poisonous influence tobacco and nicotine has...not unlike
Carrol O'Connor suing the drug dealer for providing coke to his son - again and
again. It may be free choice going in, but it is illness and gross addiction from
that moment forward. Something that both the big companies and drug cartels know
all too well. Profiteering at the detriment of the consumer. Now, does anybody
know if I can sue Entenmanns?

John Lee Hooker, the transcendent Delta bluesman whose electric boogie grooves
and odes to fast-living made him one of the 20th century's most influential musicians,
died early Thursday morning at the age of 80. According to a statement from his
management, Hooker passed in his sleep at his San Francisco home, surrounded by
family and friends. Natural causes were blamed. The son of a sharecropping minister,
Hooker grew up in the Mississippi Delta, honing his blues chops under the tutelage
of Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake, and later singing with
gospel groups. A move to Detroit urbanized his sound, and crossover hits, beginning
with 1948's hugely popular "Boogie Chillen," made his brand of boogie-woogie blues
famous worldwide. Blues-tinged British invasion bands like the Rolling Stones,
the Animals, the Yardbirds and Ten Years After worshipped at the altar of Hooker.
His licks were shamelessly ripped off by ZZ Top, George Thorogood and Foghat.
Even Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan cite Hooker as an influence. In a recording
career that spanned more than 50 years and 100 albums, he cut tracks with Van
Morrison, Carlos Santana, Los Lobos, Pete Townshend, Keith Richards and Bonnie
Raitt. He won Grammy Awards and was feted by the Blues Foundation, winning a Lifetime
Achievement Award in 1996. He's enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and
on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. He appeared in movies (The Blues Brothers) and on
soundtracks (The Color Purple). As Time magazine said in a profile, "John Lee
Hooker doesn't just sing the blues, and he doesn't just play the blues...he is
the blues." Aside from "Boogie Chillen," Hooker's signature classics included
"Boom Boom," "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and "In the Mood." "I am proud
to have spent my life playing and singing the blues all over the world," he said
when he picked up the Blues Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award. Although
he scaled back his live gigs in recent years, Hooker continued recording, releasing
his last studio album, Don't Look Back, in 1997, as well as appearing in the occasional
Pepsi commercial or Gap ad. He spent his final years in California, splitting
time between his homes in Long Beach and the Bay Area, and pulling for his beloved
Dodgers.

Tishter: Probably true about the Murph's. PIZZA? UP HERE?! Are you kidding? They
don't even know what it is....except for one place: AAA Pizza in Albany, about
30 miles from here. Still, if you want a take out or delivery large pie, you have
to specify you want the "house pie". If you don't, you will get a small little
thing that's 6 slices. It seems no pizzerias up here can get large boxes. So what
you get when you order the house pie, is a pizza that doesn't fit into the box.
It's worth it, though. There is a local pub/restaurant up here called the Shell
Inn (a converted gas station) that makes pizza with tomato juice and Kraft singles...I
kid you not! Another funny pizza story: I called a pizzeria and asked for a large
pie. They told me I must have the wrong number. They said "This isn't a bakery,
we don't make pies here". Just one more, un-related to pizza pun: When I first
moved up here, I was looking for a beer distributer to pick up a keg for a party.
I'm in a liquor store and I asked the guy "Where's the nearest beer distributer?"
His reply was "What's a beer distributer"? I explained how it is a store that
sells beer and soda. His reply (thoroughly pronouncing every single R): "Gee,
I neverrr hearrd of a place like that, but you may want to trrry the Latham Beverrrage
Centerrr rrright acrrross the strreet". You hadda be there. As for why I moved
up here: It was always my dream to live in the country. So, I gave up a really
good job on Wall Street and I now work as a technician in a nursing home. I LOVE
IT! Once you get passed the smell, you've got it licked.

TISH:>>>> Mr Murphy! Wanna hear a story? I used to work (age 16-17) at FINAST
at 75th and Jamaica where he ws the manager at the time. Across the street was
the Lane Cafe, a bar where my father used to hang out and tend bar once in a while.
I was going through some rough times back then, so my father asks his friend Dennis
Murphy if he would hire me. He did. I think my dad told him to lean on me, because
he treated me like crap. He even smacked me across the head once. I, being what
you might call a "Hippy" back then, soon got fed up with this fascist, drunken
slave-driver. So what did I do? I called the union and told them he gives the
easy jobs to his drinking buddies, that he spends most of the day at the Lane
Cafe (with the ass't manager who he is banging on a routine basis), and beats
the employees he doesn't like. The next day, the union guys and the upper echelons
from FINAST show up looking for him. They found him at the Lane Cafe. (I'm not
at work at the time). My father comes home and tells me "What did you do?? You
almost got that guy fired! He did me a favor by hiring you, and now I look like
a rat's ass!!" He told me that I quit. I never saw Dennis Murphy or his ill-fitting
toupee for years....until he hires MY BROTHER at my father's request (who, I think,
was treated very well by Mr Murphy). As far as vacation goes, I'm on it right
now. I usually stay right here, tending the house and working on the farm. I only
own 5 acres (the minimum you can own up here) and my property abuts 75+ acres
that my friend and I work. We grow literally everything that's legal, and even
have a few trout streams and swimming holes. Mowing the lawn and doing the trim
is a day's work in itself. Only kidding about the pie stands...it's from an episode
of Sienfeld (The Bubble Boy episode). BUT, we do have honey, veggie and maple
syrup stands. No one is ever working them. There's prices on stuff and a box where
you put the money and take your change. What's even more strange is that no one
cheats "the box".

Some of you were discussing standing outside of stores as kids and waiting for
mom. When I was little we lived in Brooklyn and my mom would leave me standing
outside the store and I would just shyly wait, swaying back and forth with my
hands behind my back. People would ask my mom, "aren't you afraid she'll walk
away"? She knew I wouldn't and in those days you didn't worry about someone walking
off with your child. My Grandfather took me to every show at Radio City every
holiday and other places, but couldn't take me to the girls room so he would ask
a woman who was going in if she would mind taking me into the Ladies room. Try
that today. Remember walking with my grandmother in Brooklyn once and she was
pushing a baby carriage and holding my hand. Someone walked between us and when
I took my Grandmothers hand again and looked up it was someone else. I got so
scared. I remember being really small and in Woolworth's and getting separated
from my mom and all I could see were those tall counters way above my head (now
they're only waist high, like Lewis'). How'd they get so small? Reminds of a cute
story. When I was little my family and I used to ride the BIG trains to Lake Hapatcong
to our little summer house. At the curb was this huge rock that I used to climb
up on (I have pictures). When I was 18 or 19, my ex and I used to take long rides
on Sundays. I got the summer house address from my mom and we went to find it.
Well, I couldn't believe how much that rock shrunk and how little it now was.
He gave me a sideways look and laughed when he said, "No.... think about it though".
We got and I still get a big laugh out of that one.

why is it that the dome is so well taken-care-of now?? did rudy have an agenda
to spruce up nyc parks? in my day it was a graffitti covered, drug dealers paradise.
it seems strange that the dome is well taken care of, yet the rest of the area

KML: So YOU were the other kid waiting for their Mom! Remember when you could
leave your kids safely outside any store? When you Mom would finally come back
out, you would tell her all the people that stopped by and said hello while she
was shopping. And if your Mom was dissapointed she missed so and so, you'd tell
her "they JUST went into Lewis'" so they could catch up with each other. Remember
the rides outside Lewis' for a quarter? The black horse? The bubble gum machines
at the Columbia Main Branch were still the best on Jamaica Avenue with the best
selection. Waiting while Mom shopped was dull, but there were some perks.

re: supermarkets - here in the suburban land of plenty, we have one of every kind
of supermarket there is in the tri-state area. Of course, the one closest to me,
Shop Rite, is the oldest and least attractive of them all. I don't like it, they
never have anything, and the way I describe it to my family, is I say "It's like
a Scaturros." And they understand immediately. Anyone else remember standing outside
of Scaturros, with several other brothers and sisters, hanging onto the handle

Dan, as always I am your fan. Yeah, Scaturro's always was the most odiferous joint
on the Avenue with the exception of that cheese shop next to Jason's but at least
THEY had an excuse! We have pie shops on the road too, but you need to go to Suffolk
County to find them. All the farms have them. I have vague memories of a guy named
George Murphy being a manager but that may have been before or after your friend.

Glad to be of help, Jim. Once in a while, I would catch the end of the parade
when dismissed from SES. I think the parade started at P.S. 60 and disappeared
somewhere around the corner after Whiting Square (past the Rock). Do you remember
those military/religious cartoon booklets handed out at the parade? It usually
showed two war buddies in the thick of battle with graphic cartooning of their
fatal wounds and dying moments. One guy would always survive and find God to show
him the way. They also had curses like "damn" in them, and any women in the cartoon
looked like Raquel Welch in skin tight clothing. Sex, violence and language -
pretty racy for back then, especially for grade school kids. They were handed
out to everyone at the parade. Wish I knew where they were from, and wish even
more I kept them.

Tish- Thanks for the job info for my daughter, as well as those Mc Dermott memories. Now
a few notes from my memory... the 78 St. supermarket was King Kullen back in 1958
when my brother Bill worked in their produce department as his high school summer
job.It later changed to Key Food for many years. Pizza updates... even though
we usually went to Sal's ...a visit to Carlos' about 2 years ago was very worthwhile.
Bella Vista was "The" family Italian sit down restaurant for many years. Saverio
Maione's Mom was the waitress there until the mid '80's.The other reasonably priced
family restaurant was Bruono's,on the corner of Jamaica and 76 St.. Back when
a TV was repaired, instead of being thrown out, there was Alex TV on 80 St.,a few
doors south of Jamaica Ave. The Anniversary Day parade was for the local Protestant
Churches, which us Catholic school kids were 'encouraged' to avoid.I remember
the parade going along 91 Ave.,near the 87 St. firehouse.

KML: The station with the movie that played Tara's Theme was WPIX Channel 11.
They used that song till they started doing the Sunday Family Movie, and then
they used some updated song that sounded like the music in the theatre while you
were watching the Place your Trash Here, and Buy Snacks commercial. The 4:30 Movie
was on WABC, Channel 7, and if anybody really wants to hear the song, I can hum
it to you. DAN: Kids still do go egging, but they make it hard to buy the eggs
at all the stores. I see evidence all the time! The carousel was redone years
ago and still, traditionally, opens on Memorial Day Weekend. It is lovely and
works great! All the parks were redone years ago too. They are clean with working
sprinklers. I was taught to avoid the parkees so I don't go out of my way to notice
them, but they must be there because the children's playgrounds are CLEAN - no
debris! The Dome looks like it belongs in another state, like Iowa. Very pretty,
new seating, new lavatory and ticket kiosks. Don't know what type of concerts
are coming up, but I'd think it would be family stuff or classical. The Soup Bowl
still rocks, just like the kids that know exactly how sneak in...My husband buys
a pizza pie for all of us, so I don't know how much a slice and soda cost. Carlos
still has awesome, perfect pizza. The name of the supermarket at 78th was most
recently Pioneer, but it closed and reopened last week as a 24 hour mostly produce
market (which by the way, is terrific! Great selection, good quality and dirt
cheap). No, not a single book store. You have to go to Forest Hills to the huge
Barnes and Noble or to the Queens Center Mall (I never go there, but there is
a book store on the premises). No idea on the Anniversary parade, Confession is
held at St. Thomas' and St. Elizabeth's. Thom McCann is no more but there is a
Payless for shoes. Jaf's gone. Jason's, still open, added an extra aisle so the
whole place is overcrowded and cramped, and made the second room into a card and
gift shop. Bella Vista closed a million years ago too and there is a place called
the Pasta Cafe in its place with GREAT food. Scaturro's still stinks to high heaven
and I just can't walk in there. What do you think? Is it the air conditioning?
The place always smells like sour milk, but yeah, they are open. Oh, and if you
want to come down here and get bit by a bug, visit Forest Park before the West
Nile virus spraying starts. I CAN tell you about the kid sports, and it is probably
the same in every state. YES, everybody wins (it is always a tie) for the wee
kids, but when they get older age 8 in most sports, SCORES COUNT. There are championships
to contend with in swimming, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and probably
other sports (those are the ones my girl plays). I say most states, because these
kids go on to compete in state wides if they really rock. Just went to an award
ceremony last night and have 3 more basketball games till the end of the season.
Believe me, every point counts!

Oh yeah, I forgot something: I heard that in Mass., the school teams and kids
sports leagues did away with scores. I heard this is now actually sanctioned by
the organizations and you can't be in an official league if you won't play scoreless
games. It seems they don't want to disappoint children by losing a game, so they
play soccer, baseball, whatever...and there is no winner or loser. It's supposed
to help the kids by not making them feel bad if they lose a game. Is there any
truth to this? Anyone out there from Mass. can confirm or de-firm this?

Is the carousel still up and running? Are any of the playgrounds still operational,
with working sprinklers and Parkees? Are there any concerts at the Dome? Do kids
still go to the "Soup Bowl" to sled? How much is a slice of pizza and can you
still get one at the window in front of the pizzeria? What's the name of the supermarket
on 78 st and Jamaica ave? Are there any book stores (real bookstores, not book
sections of Duane Reade) on the avenue? Is Derby, Henry, Bernard or the "Black
Widow" still around? Do they still have the Anniversary Day parade? Do kids still

Noticed on the Bulletin Board some talking about blackouts. I don't remember the
blackout of '77, but there was one around '66 or'67. It ran up and down the entire
east coast. Happened around 5:30-6:45 in the evening. I was in Manhattan at 52nd
and 6th, working overtime and one of the keys on my typewriter wouldn't type.
Then I noticed that lights getting dim and everyone thought I was nuts. The next
thing we know, out go the lights. We ran to the windows and watched the floors
of the Americana Hotel go out one at a time. Before we knew it, the entire city
was in darkness. After some time, and I guess after finding out how bad this was,
we all stood in line to use the phones to call home rides. We only had to walk
down 5 flights of stairs and when we got there it was crazy. There were cars everyone.
And, we could hear the drone of planes overhead. There were rumors, of course,
that we were being attacked by the Russians, or someone, so we were all a little
scared. Mostly there was a lot of joking. There were lots of cars just lined up
and down the street and the drivers were both looking for the person they were
to take home and others would just yell out, "Anyone need to go to Brooklyn"?,
or "anyone need to go to Astoria, Flushing, Coney Island"? My then boyfriend,
later to become husband, now ex, drove all the way in from Woodhaven. Didn't get
there until around 8 or so. I was VERY happy to see him. We took 4 others home
before we got home at around 1 a.m. The next day I started out for work and as
I got to the top steps of the el, my mom came running up the Blvd. yelling to
me that my office was closed. Whew! I knew some people whose trains got stuck
in the middle of the Williamsburg Bridge and had to walk the tracks and then take
buses home from there. Or had to get off trains in the middle of dark tunnels,
walk the tracks to stations and get out from there. Stores were being looted.
My mom was in Jamaica with my sister shopping and got home via bus. My Dad met
them on the corner of Jam. & the Blvd. with a flashlight and nearly scared them
to death when he flashed it into their faces. All-in-all, it was quite fun. But,
that could be because I was so much younger.

I was married, I thought every day was father's day ... they only work 8 hours
a day, come home to a hot meal and clean laundry, watch tv till they fall asleep.
Gee, I could do that!!!

I always wondered exactly what type of store Irving Small' was. It had a lot of
records but I forget what other stuff it had. Was it a bit of a toy store too?
I seem to remember some other music related stuff as well.

re: what goes through a birds mind when flying through a fireworks display? I
would guess a bottle rocket! Irving Small, yes, I bought 45's there. My kids recently
found a 45 record, and wanted to know how it fit into the cd player.

A/S: Clown shoes in a mine field????? Are you s u r e you never did acid?? Man,
that's too funny..the sick part is, I can picture it. I'm sort of grateful we
never met or hung out together. I probably wouldn't have survived the laughter.
P.S. I saw your photo. So, THAT's where you store your nuts for the winter! >>>JM85<<<:
IRVING SMALL'S....that's a name I had forgotten. Thanks for the memory jolt. Wasn't
that the store that used to have one of those glass "dunking" birds in the window?
You know...those things that would look like they are drinking water from a glass...If
I remember correctly, Irving Small's used to sell models and such... Am I correct?
RE: Philisophical disussion: Here's one to ponder......What goes on inside a bird's
mind when it's flying through a fireworks display? AND LASTLY: here's an address
many of you will find interesting. It's a VERY addicting game, no pop ups or annoying
ads or sign up's, etc., just a game...http://www.netives.com/marbles2.jsp. My
high score is 823, try and beat that! Dan

an unspecified percentage of users. In a double blind field test conducted also

in the testing area. All participants in the study did survive, however.Free samples

Bookstores, did you say ??? Not a whole lot of Woodhaven denizens were literate,so,according
to the demographics of the time, bookstores weren't warranted.Sure, picture books
were in demand, but not the printed word...You folks were the exception to the
rule,of course. The hoi poloi of days gone by...

The lack of a bookstore was quite annoying to a book worm such as myself. Irving
Small's (little junky store by Dicks Deli) Had books but he only opened once and
a while and the books were not on the best seller list! The Queens Center Mall
did have a book store, at least for a while, because my mother used to leave me
in their while she did her shopping. I would spend hours in there! Can't imagine
doing that to one of my kids today.

We didn't sell lemonade, but I remember as kids, every Halloween we would attempt
to make our house into a Haunted House. Me, my brother and sister, and the kids
who lived downstairs used to have all the kids on the block start at the front
of the house, work your way to the back and down to our basement (which was pretty
scary when the lights were out)! We had decorations and scary noises and spider
webs all over the place. We used to have so much fun! I don't think we charged
admission though.

Bookstores! Yes, Dan I remember how horrible it was that there were absolutely
no bookstores. I would go through the antique stores and get some books (don't
think I ever paid more than fifty cents). The best thing was when the Queen Center
Mall opened and everyone asked "will there be a book store?". There wasn't. But
around the corner, by SUN LUCK, they did open a B. Dalton. Everytime I went I
expected it would be closed, but it hung on for a while. USA: Kids in Woodhaven
don't sell anything in front of their houses anymore. They are lucky if they can
play outside without militia to watch for their safety. I always used to buy Kool-Aid
from kids even if I never drank it, but the only sales now are the "garage" variety
and its the parents unloading stuff - no kid enterprises. We used to do plays,
and borrow bridesmaid dresses from neighbors to use as costumes. We made people
pay to see the play but gave the refreshments away for free.

Testing....Testing...1, 2, 3........ Hot DOG!!! It woiks! OK, here goes...THINGS
I HATED ABOUT WOODHAVEN (1960's-70's)......Not ONE book store, the kerosene smell
now and then from JKF airport, the jets that flew over my house on foggy nights,
stepping in the dog poop that was everywhere, the noisey el train, ....that's
about it I really can't think of anything that bad about the old town. Anyone
have any? Thank You Mr. Webster. I knew the guestbook would be open again. A suggestion:
in the forum, add or change one of the catagories to "Philisophical Discussion",
it should be quite interesting to see what the Woodhaven mind has to say.......

to the VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE who worked hard to get things right again! I missed
everyone! Anyone sell lemonade in Woodhaven? Here on Long Island the kids are
charging 50 cents! We used to have carnivals in the yard for all the kids nearby.
We wouldn't charge to get in but to play the games it cost a penny! Welcome Back
