July 2002

Marge, I remember the air raid drills in the basement of St. Thomas the Apostle. This was during the Viet Nam War and we had to be prepared in case those godless commies got past our radar and attacked us. We would put our coats over our heads, saying our Hail Marys, while the boys made the sounds of bombs exploding.

You know your a baby boomer from WOODHAVEN if you remember these. Cake sales sponsered by the P.T.A. at P.S.65 with those cupcakes with yellow cake and rich, soft chocolate icing and those little men figures made out of marshmellows, gumdrops and toothpicks(5 cents ea.)The 3 part notes we needed signed by the dentist. First part when you started treatment, second for work in progress, and third for completion.Field trips to the Hayden Planetarium. Third grade teacher Mrs. Bliss and the principal Mrs. O'Brien(she had blueish/silver hair)The fire drills where we marched not only out of the school but down the side street behind the school(and then we turned around I guess to watch it burn?)When the classrooms were decorated for St. Patrick's Day,Lincoln's and Washington's birthday(they were SEPARATE holiday's back then)Halloween' and Thanksgiving. When we exchanged cheap Valentine and Christmas cards(and exchanged the MUMPS,CHICKEN POX,MEASLES etc. etc.)

If it makes her feel better to use me as a punching bag, so be it. Those who know me, know better. Jealousy can sometimes be very damaging. You know you're from Woodhaven if you're the only people in the world who knows what a "pretzel roll" is. Glendale bakery was the only place in the world (it seems) who sold them, with or without salt, take it home, eat it with butter, ahh, heaven. This is not even that long ago, as most of these memories go...this is only about 7 years ago, when I left. I have been in every bakery in monmouth county, and when I even say the word "pretzel roll," they look at me like I have two heads. Re: Anniversary Day (Protestant) parade, I was always under the impression that that was a bad thing, that I shouldn't even acknowledge it...of course, I was in school at STA that day, they certainly wouldn't give US off from school to watch non-catholics parade their religion in front of us superior catholic school kids. I can tell you I can true remember the nuns making us pray for "the poor public school children." If I'm nuts, I can always blame the nuns! FORGET priest abuse, how about some good NUN ABUSE stories?!

Stroll with me and close yours eyes and go back to: before internet, bombings, aids, herpes, semiautomatics, crack, SEGA or Super Nintendo. Way back...to sitting on the curb, or stoop...about hide-and-go-seek, Simon says and red-light, green-light. Lunch boxes with a thermos...chocolate milk, going home for lunch, penny candy from the store, hopscotch, butterscotch, skakes with keys, jacks and Cracker Jacks, hula hoops and sunflower seeds, wax lips and mustaches. Mary Jane's, saddle shoes and Coke bottles with the names of cities on the bottom. Remember when it took five minutes for the TV to warm up. When nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids arrived home from school. When nobody owned a purebred dog. When a quarter was a decent allowance. When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny. When your Mom wore nylons that came in 2 pieces. When all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done everyday and wore high heels. When men wore suits and hats to ballgames. When women wore hats and gloves. Remember running through the sprinkler, circle pins, bobby pins, Mickey Mouse Club, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Kookla, Fran and Ollie, Spin and Marty, Dick's Clark's American Bandstand, Laurel and Hardy, Howdy Doody and the Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk...all in black and white and your Mom made you turn if off when a storm came. When around the corner semed far away, and going downtown seemed like going somewhere. Climbing trees, making forts, backyard shows, lemonade stands, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, staring at clouds, jumping on the bed, pillow fights, ribbon candy, angel hair on the Christmas tree, Jackie Gleason, white gloves, walking to the movie theatre, running till you were out of breath or your sides hurt, laughing so hard your stomach hurt. Not stepping on a crack or you'd break your mother's back. Paper-chains at Christmas, silhouettes of Lincoln and Washington, the smells of school, of paste and Evening in Paris. What about the gird who dotted her i's with hearts? That was before the smiley face)! The Stroll, popcorn balls and sock hops. Remember when there were just 2 types of sneakers for girls and boys...Keds and PF Flyers, and the only time you wore them at school was for gym. And, the girls wore those ugly gym uniforms. The sounds of a real mower on Saturday morning and summers with the bike riders, baseball games, bowling, visits to the pool and eating Kook-Aid powder with sugar from the palm of your hand. When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, withoug asking-all for free-every time! And, you didn't pay for air either, and you got trading stamps to boot! When laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box. When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents. When the worst thing you could do at school was flunk a test or chew gum. And the prom was in the gym or the lunchroom and you danced to a real orchestra. When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed--and they did! When being sent to the Principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by-shootings, drugs, gangs, or terrorists. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But, we survived because their love was so much greater than the threat. Remember when a '57 Chevy was everyone's dream car--used to cruise, peel out, lay rubber, scratch off or watch submarine races? When people went steady; and girls wore a class ring with an ince of wrapped Band-Aids, dental-floss or yard coated with pastel-frost nail polish so it would fit their finger. When no one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the car and house doors were never locked. Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like, "That cloud looks like a..."And playing baseball with no adults needed to enforce the rules of the game. Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals, because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger. And, with all our progress, don't you just wish, that just once you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace...and share it with the children of today?

How about the Anniversary Day Parade, when all the Churches would march with their own little bands. What a racket! I always took part in it with my church. The Woodhaven Babtist Church just south of Jamaica Ave. on 80st. We'd march down 80st with our bands and floats, and head east past the neighborhood of Big Rock. I know that was called something square but can't remember. And it was actually a pretty big thing. People would line the streets by the hundreds and watch. I'm sure that that parade is, by now, no more.

I try to lump as many related subjects together as possible so here goes. Of course we all remember opening the johnny pumps( now there's an old expression you don't hear much anymore)during the summer and running through.Remember going to Cypress Pool(and I don't mean one of those season pass things)Putting out money for this was a BIG deal.and wearing those locker keys around your wrist.I remember a summer or two back in the late 50's when LANE H.S. would open on wednesday afternoons and for 25 cents you could swimm in the pool for 1 hour. You needed to bring a set of underpants wrapped in a towel so you could change in the locker room and not wear the wet suit home. We all lined up on the Elderts Lane side way up at the top gate. Finally does anyone remember when ANY PLAYGROUND in N.Y.C.had their sprinklers turned on certain days so us kids could run through it.Oh yeah one more...taking the Liberty Ave. train to Rockaway Beach.

Jim of Mineola: I had my first wedding at Le Cordon Bleu and, I did get my flowers from Finn's. I moved to Woodhaven in 1954, but couldn't get into STA until the following year which would be the Sept. '55-'56 school year. I'm pretty sure that I started then with the royal blue jumper with blazer, white peter-pan collar blouse, those awfulclip on bow ties and beenie caps. However, at the time I was so happy to get out of P.S. and back into a Catholic school it didn't matter. When my Mom called the convent just 1 day before school started to find out if I could get in that year we were asked to hold on while the nuns finished prayers. We could hear them singing in the background. It was like the angels were singing. Isn't it amazing how all nuns could sing like angels and write so perfectly. Must have been those blessed pens or something. Also, I loved it that when you went to mass before class, and if you received communion, you didn't have to stand at prayers in the classroom. Instead you could sit and eat your breakfast. I can still taste the hot tea from my thermos and the fried egg sandwich my mom would make for me with a little bit of salt included on toast and wrapped in waxed paper and foil. Oh, God, my mouth is drooling. My mom was/is the best.

If u remember that u are truly from Woody. Sometimes we would wrap our ties (yes that's right, we had to wear ties to school) around our hand and play with a golf ball. Started out with Dr. Vasta on the corner of 90th St. and the Avenue. I think he was a butcher not a dentist. I hated and still hate the Dentist and one time I bit his finger and he was out of work for 3 days. I think that's when I started going to Dr. Serio. However, a few years later when I was dating my ex, we went to my ex's Aunt & Uncles for barbeque and lo and behold, who was there, but good ol' Dr. Vasta. I was sooo embarrassed. I still hate the dentist and mostly only have to go for cleanings. Haven't had a filling in about 20 yrs and it was about 20 yrs before that that I had one. Thank God I have good teeth.

Jim of Mineola: Mom and I had a GREAT time. It was a double Hallmark moment. A night at the Inn...$125. A sunset, champagne sail...$35/pp. Time with Mom...Priceless! Saw the new bank next the the Ruggierre place yesterday. And, Columbia is now Queens Community Bank or something like that.. I remember Dr. Jacoby's name, but we went to Dr. Rizzolli, on the same side of the street as the Library. He did housecalls too. He died just a few years ago and my Mom said STA was packed for the funeral service.

U would have to go back to the late 50's (which I know u do) to remember those. Matter of fact now that I think of it, that corner became the house where Tommy Hollander lived.

YKYFW: When you call Jamaica Avenue, "the Avenue". When you drive down "the Blvd" and you recognize that St. Anthony's is gone. (It looks much better by the way). When you notice that Smiley's is still there. When you remember all the different ice cream parlors, and "hung out" in only one. That was the rule. When you remember 2 Lewis' (it's weird that one is gone and is now a Genovese Drug store). When you went to Lewis's to buy 45's and they were in little slots. When Rexall was the BIG drugstore to go to. When you walk by one of the candy stores and can smell the egg creams (just did that this morning. Wanted to go in so badly, but the store looked scroungy). When you remember the Willard, Roosevelt (became Le Cordon Bleu where I had my wedding reception) and the Valencia with the sky, stars and all, in the ceiling. When walking by the STA convent and hearing the nuns sing. When the STA nuns walked down the street and you bowed you head to them and you knew they were nuns. When you rolled down the hill at Forest Park (the hill is shorter now I think because of the underbrush and trees growing down from the top, or, maybe because I'm now bigger). When you walked up one el staircase and down the other to cross "the Avenue". When you walked "the Avenue" anytime of night to window shop in Murray's, Jason's, Jack and Jill and Joseph's When you know what "Klugman's stood for. When you went to Jack and Jill for those STA uniforms and Buster Brown for the black oxford's (Yuck!) When you remember the Chinese laundry and the very distinct smell. I was just in Woodhaven this morning. Stayed overnight with Mom and we shopped in Tony's this morning so she could pick up a few things. Thousands of memories came flooding back. Some still there to remind me...some gone. Took Mom on Monday to St. Michael's, MD for her birthday. Came back Tuesday night. Also too her on a sunset, champagne sail for her birthday and everyone sang to her. It was great since she'd never sailed before. You know you're from Woodhaven when there is a part of you that will always know that, and be proud of it.

YKYFW if you played 'asses up' with a Pensey Pinkie instead of a Spaldine. You knew that when you came to bat in the annual 88RD wiffle ball game, that Duck Delano would have something funny to say about you over the loud speaker. That Tarryton cigarettes were 52 cents in Dexters. Stoop ball at the Post Office on Forest Pkwy was the best lace to play. The hill in Forest Park at 79th street to 80th Street was clear of trees and good for sleigh riding. You knew the short cuts through the apartment buildings on Forest Pkwy and how to get through by going underneath the buildings to 85 Rd. That staying out till 11 PM was alright as long as you stayed in the 'dead end'. That Dicks Deli was a rip off. That Irving Small was scary. The Empire diner dirty. Boones farm wine was $1.19. Blackberry brandy fit in you back pocket.

Ken, I like your bargin pizza prices. As best I can remember ,Sal's was the first 'by the slice' pizza joint, but I'm not sure if it was 10 or 15 cents a slice back then...around 1957. What was that bar /restaurant just past the Willard that would have the sauerbraten buffet several times a year ? After a few visits from us that stopped. Another price bargin was when Lucky Strike bowling lanes on Alantic and Cresent had 3 games for $1 on Saturday afternoons. Now for $1, you may be able to rent the bowling shoe laces. Also the last year for car races in Dexter Park was 1958 ... with my PAL badge admission was 5 cents. WOW, am I old !!!!

Traditionally, stories from books are absorbed passively while the reader is reading in a chair. Now, there are different methods. With the help of a good imagination, you can create something your own. For example, you can try to write your own story. It is not necessary to be a writer, all you have to do is to react in turn with the co-author (co-authors). It is a fascinating game, with the endless possibilities. The only limitations are imposed by your own fantasy. In this world you can imagine any rules. Those interactive stories will be published on the Internet, in virtual magazines, and at the end may be published as a book.

Sez and Rich - Just to get you drooling , when we went to Eddie Austin's to watch Monday Night Football, I would always stop at Gay's Deli, the last place to carry Hoffmann's Chocolate Cream Soda. Do you think discussing this proves we are now on the verge of senility?

sez... mission orange mighty good also. I saw in the store the other day a milk drink that is orange and cream mixed , it's just like a creamsickle . Now that was good stuff. Remember those days after our thirty inning games like yesterday. That my friend nobody can ever take away. I will talk to you soon i think i will try and add to my nestegg today and work for awhile .... jimbo watch out for those shells , remember you need at least two to three feet of draft between you and the wave ... later

Jim - How does it sound, Rich the Kid has his ocean, I have my poker, golf and music. Life is good, it's ALL good. Only thing is, with my stomach allergies I can't hoist'em any more. So though an occasional brewski would taste good, can't say as i'm missing much. Always was more a cream soda man anyway. Remember Mission Cream. What was it, about 10 cents a bottle. How good was that, after a hot summer stickball game.

jim/sez my office is one block from the beach. I look out at the waves from my deck, as i am on the second floor. It doesn't get any better than this.We open the doors and the breeze is dyno, we have sort of a key west style bldg. Yes i have been known to wander down to the sands during working hours so my office staff nkows where to find me and have even sent a customer there on occasion. Beleive it or not the temp. is usually not bad here , i guess it's the ocean breazeand if it gets nasty you go in the pool or hoist a few . That always cools things off. You are right i am where i want to be , i love it here, only one thing wrong my son mike is still up north. Hopefully he will come down for good in the future. Later , time to hit it.rich

Jim - Gotta tell ya, even for sun worshippers like Rich and me, there are degrees of toleration. When it gets too hot I just don't bother with it, and probably Rich is the same. But the thing is, even the hottest summer is better than the cold winter, so we pick our poisen. You say it's been hovering around 100 in NY. If we ever saw 100 in AZ in June or July we'd bundle up. We've been running 108 to 112 for few weeks now, and that stuff 'bout dry heat is bullshit. It's too hot to do anything but go to the casino, which by the way I do gladly. C ya!!

Sez And Rich - How are you guys happy as hell living so close to it? Three days in a row in NY feeling like 100 is enough to have me cheer for the first artic cold front. But don't worry I still have plenty of time to show those kids at Jones Beach how an AARP member can still bodysurf.

Someone sane here asked about St. Anthony's. The ground is proposed for a Pre-K to 3rd grade, Senior Citizens home and something else. The ballfields are to stay.

Word has it that St. Anthony's will be a combination of Pre-K through 3rd grade, a Senior Citizen Home and one other thing. The ball fields will stay.
