Anti-skell: We would like buy approximately 5-10 miles from shore. As for the crabs...I thought you'd enjoy that. Since you are a transplant, maybe you can tell me how hard or easy it is to transplant from one state to the next, including the timing of selling a home and buying one. I'm not sure if this is what you experienced but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I rarely post that much anymore and however i read it everyday. My family has been slandered and i have been the victom of numerous practical jokes. If you happen to be insinuating i am writing anything else then what i just mentioned, you are very wrong and quite frankly do not have the right.but im sure your quick accusation for whatever reason will no doubt unleash numerous copycat posts. So unless you have something nice to say, don't adress me with the simpletons that ruin this site **EVER**again please.

Anti-skell: I'm not much of a fisherman but have caught some crabs in my time. The most fishing I ever did was for blues under the Varrenzano bridge. On this trip, I had no idea what the heck I was doing, but the kids enjoyed it. I don't think there was too much in the area as we received so much rain that the fishermen all said that most fish would run out to sea to get away from the fresh water. I did enjoy the experience and am considering my move to Fla.,(which will have to include buying a boat) and fishing for my own supper. There's something very special about completely providing for ones self.

Miss Marie I hadn't remembered Hayden Plaentarium, but I do now that you mention it. I do have one memory of Rye. It is what started my loath of carnival rides. While riding the "Catapillar" (sp) I very suavely vomited on Jeanne Kavanaugh's lap. I think it was our eigth grade trip so we must have been thirteen. I was trying to be so "cool" but it is hard to be "cool" after that happened. The movie BIG reminded me of Rye and our school trip. I don't remember any other details of the trip Bob C.

If you order a chicken dinner, it came on a sectioned cardboard plate with a square dinner roll, a peel back container of cranberry sauce and crinkled but never browned french fries. It was topped off with an identical cardboard plate stapled to the top of the dinner plate. The fries were always steamed too much, but the chicken was very good!

One day while I was there ,my cousin drove me too the island where we had lunch at the very entertaining Bubble Room and then joined the crowds picking up the unique seashells on the beach opposite Barbra Streisand's house. It really is the closest thing to a tropical paradise in the lower 48. If you get homesick for it, there is a web site with a live cam www.sanibel-captiva-island.com

Do you remember Christine Brozon,a very pretty but quiet girl who lived about 3 doors from you on 80 St? We can't find her ...do you remember if she had any brothers or sisters? Regarding Ron Iz,he always talked about moving to Florida, but last I saw of him was on Park Ave working for Metro North RR (about 5 years ago)..ask Dennis, as I think he lived a few miles from him.Rich, did you like the Hamptons beach web cam? Hello all. Just returned from Captiva Island. Hope all well with everyone. Our first two days on the island were completely washed out. We received 13 inches of rain which is absurd. The storms were a show in and of themselves, but got old by day two. After that, typical Florida weather. We checked out some homes on our last day and are now convinced to re-locate to the sunshine state.

Yo Ken -Good to hear from you. Hope all is well with you and Arlene ...Joan couldn't believe it was you, and we hope to see you next month.Last night as we were taking our exercise walk we saw 'Mont' coming back from the Mets game (we are still avid fans). At Christmas,Mont got a card from Tom Conway who now lives about 70 miles east of San Francisco, including a picture of his three kids.(16-22including a son who looks exactly like Benny Agbianni). You didn't answer the Pecan Tarzan quiz (Ron Izetta,of course),but I know it's you because I can't see you spinning a bball on your finger in the background ,while you are strumming on the guitar and I can smell that great Sauerbraten and dumplings that I'm sure you get in Phoenix's Germantown.Regards to Bob,have him show you his class reunion picture from Tony Rizzuto.

Eager-I'm up to Chapter 17. I would love to start a WOL book club. And the Woodhaven aspects are mostly Jamaica Avenue stores and the local schools. The main kid works in a fictional version of Lewis' called Alston's. And he goes to Lane, along with all of his friends but his older sister goes to St. Francis. That kind of thing.

Yes I remember when they used to hand out those little colored things to get into the Roosevelt Theater for free. Used to get them by the bunches when I was going to PS 97 from late 50s to 60. It's a little fuzzy, but I think they also had some kind of coloring deal, which won some kind of prize (maybe free entry into the theater) for the best coloring job. Like a little coloring book. Anybody remember the ahem..."collectible" art that adorned the subway cars depicting illustrations of various WPLJ Rock stars? I remember rock blocks, Vin Scelsa, the WNEW Biscuits from England show, the ORIGINAL WLIR with the music that mattered, the Mudd Club, Area, Studio 54 (the first time around) which entertained disco heads and rockers because everybody liked the party even if they didn't like the music. All you had to do to get in was wear the right shoes. Never wore my Candies there, but the nude and red colors were my Rockaway beach favorites!

Jim of Mineola...Actually,Buffalo Bob has a few different meanings...A Buffalo Bob was a hair style in the 30s'and 40's,and it was akin to an old ladie's hair bun,on the back of the head, the difference being it was shaped liked a miniature buffalo, and worn by women of the mid-west and west.It was often accompanied by buffalo parfum. Also,Buffalo Bob was a game not unlike bobbing for apples, except the object of the bobbing was buffalo chips...Last,but certainly not least,The Buffalo Bob was a dance with ties to the Texas Two Step, and Square dancing, where the male of the species picked the fattest, raunchiest female of the species he could find, and tried to twirl and dip her without dropping her---no small feat.Buffalo Bill, aside from being a famous individual, was also a one dollar bill in 1870's Kansas, used for free drinks in the local saloons and partial payment in the local whorehouse. It was also a bill one recieved from a local buffalo for goods recieved and services rendered. We do not have to discuss what services said local buffalo might have rendered...

15 years ago there were about 2,000 murders a year in NYC. Peaking at I think 2,200 odd in 1990. Last year there were 672. We can regret the decline of one zip code, but let's keep the bigger picture in focus. The city (as a whole)is safer than it was even 30 years ago. Neighborhoods go through cycles. Has anyone been to Williamsburg lately? If you care to look up from your copy of the NY Post about Marcy Ave, you might be in for a pleasant surprise. Woodhaven will turn around.

The tragic killing of the jeweler on Jam. ave is another example of how East New York has contaminated woodhaven. If you seen the drawing of the suspect you would know that this crime would not have taken place 15 years ago in woodhaven. It saddens me how people continue to hang on onto woodhaven like it was the old neighberhood. I am starting a petition to re-zone woodhaven to be part of Bklyn, as it now looks more like bed-sty then it does Queens. Jamaica ave is only good to get checks cashed, wire money or get flat top hair cuts.

James Mennig's story of what he saw in the sky was so incredible his own mother didn't believe him. To him, the bright lights looked like a plane engulfed in flames. But authorities said it was likely a meteor shower or a different type of natural phenomenon known as a fireball or "bolide." "It was about the size of that Jeep Cherokee," the 22-year-old Pottsville resident said Monday evening, pointing to a parked vehicle. Similar sightings were reported throughout the Northeast, with people from Virginia to New York saying they saw lights in the sky and heard loud noises.

Less than one week ago, a similar but smaller incident happened down the east coast in Florida. A local resident taking her sunset walk on the beach watched small fire balls shoot down into the water from the sky. She reported them and it was an Associated Press story. She swam out and collected some of the debris. There were witnesses. Nothing much came of it. No explanations were given. There were so many calls in various states last night, that order had to be restored and statements were made by two different agencies. Wonder what will happen next week?

Glowing streak in sky - a fireball believed to be a meteor raced across the sky Monday in a blazing arc seen from upstate NY to Virginia, as reported in our local newspaper today. "It was most likely an unusually large meteoroid that exploded in the air still very high up in the atmosphere and probably producing a shower of debris," said Alexander Wolszcan, an astronomy prof. at Penn State. National Weather Service at Mounth Holly NJ said they started getting calls about 6:30 pm. Anyone see.

To Meekco, Looks like my post started some unhappiness here. The person I directed it to is a guy who has been here a long time and at times has been treated unfairly. I was talking about whoever wrote that post using his name, the post written by Foil and also by just curious. In the post those topics caused lots of problems including the closing of the guestbook. Perhaps you thought I was writing in response to Heathers post - not the case. Thanks for the offer of the number but I'm sure I'd be advised for my mental health to stop visiting here and I guess I'd rather not hear it. You did hit a nerve if you are involved in the posts I mentioned. You said some things never change but I don't ever remember seeing your name before. This is how the regulars react. Correction.com, USA - Friday, July 20, 2001 at 13:43:17 (PDT)

USA: Most families now have more than one car. Also a single family home only housed one family back then. Now many have been made into apartments with more adults driving per building. More people = More cars. I remember a bus going down 91st Avenue once and it was like a whale appearing in your bedroom closet! Everyone stared, slack-jawed, and said "They are NOT supposed to do that". So funny. Adults talked about how the ground was made for heavy traffic and I thought the whole thing would cave-in and we'd lose the candy store! Remember when you could buy packs of firecrackers, sparklers and such at the candy store? My favorite way to spend allowance in July. Remember looking for dead firecrackers the next day to find the powder and make genies? Who was cooler than an 8 year old with a fresh punk? C78 mentioned the beautiful leaves in Woodhaven...in July they were full of holes as kids burned their names into them with punks lit off backyard BBQs. C78: Nothing could compare to Forest Park in ANY season. I always thought it was beautiful and really loved the variety of trees on my block too. On my block, we used to say we'd "meet back at the big fat tree after lunch/dinner etc...". It was a place to hang out, make plans and peel bark while picking up poly-noses. We had the "green garages" on our block too. Great place to use chalk for artwork and gossip (i.e. Anna loves Jimmy 8-4-72). You could play outdoors all day only coming in when you were called.

I used the el stairs to cross the Avenue too. That really cracked me up that others did the same thing. I can't remember when the zip codes changed, but the really goes back, Woodhaven 21, NY...love it! I still remember my old phone number in Woodhaven, but can't give it because my mom is still there and with that same number. MARY, I remember yours too. Had to know it...that love, love, love thing. MISS MARIE, I remember the Roosevelt Theatre, but don't remember the coupons or dishes. And, going home for lunch was great. When you went to STA, you HAD to go to mass every morning before school. And I, being the holy-roller that I was (emphasis on was), received communion every morning. For those who did, you didn't have to say morning prayers in class and you could eat breakfast (heavens, no eating before communion). My mom would make a thermos of hot tea and she'd pack me a fried egg on toast wrapped in waxed paper and then foil, to keep it warm, of course and with a litle bit of salt on the side. The toast would get a little soggy, but it was still warm and tasted soooo good. Maybe that's why my colesterol (sp?)is so high now. Did the ring-and-run thing and got into big trouble because we rung-and ran and hid. My parents were looking all over for my and a neighbor/friend and it got dark and then we were afraid to come out because they figured we were the ones that did it. We were hiding behind some high bushes in the back my back yard. Boy, did I get yelled at. MARY: Dinner is about the same as usual for company...appetizers of bread for dipping in olive oil with red pepper flakes, basil and salt in it. And, I think tonight I'll try something different. Skewer a few shrimp and scallops, baste with some garlic, lemon juice, wine and parsley or something, grill and serve. Dinner: same salad of mixed greens, slivered almonds, mandarin orange slices, dried cranberries with Morgan's Balsamic Vinegarette. Grilled salmon, but instead of serving with pesto, I'm going to try a diced mango and pineapple salsa with chopped red peppers and some other stuff I don't remember from the recipe. Uncle Ben's rice boiled in chicken broth and lemon rind shavings. And, steamed in foil, on the grill yellow squash, zucchini, red and yellow peppers, onions and carrots, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with Nature's Seasoning and Sea Salt. Dessert is peach ice cream with fresh sliced peaches and fresh blueberries and strawberries with heavy cream. Appropriate wines throughout and some after dinner drinks of probably Single Malt Scotch for the guys and a nuts-and-berries and cream for the ladies. Have a great weekend all.

Forest Parker... I had forgotten all about Blue Lane and its vidio games. I used to go there at lunch time from STA, the place stunk of smoke and you could barely see. All us "cool" STA girls in our uniforms smoking away playing vidio games. They had this one game I loved, I believe the object of the game was to trace boxes, don't remember the name of it though. I was always afraid of the head shop, my sister told me they sold heads in the back of the store and I of course belived her (I was about 6). She used to drag me in there and towards the back of the store. Oh the torture!

Does anyone remember the Roosevelt Theater before it became the Monsignor Mulz Hall? On Friday afternoon, STA would give out these large tag- like coupons & if you had the right color you could get into the movies for free. You could get into the movies for 25 cents. Imagine that!! They also gave out free dishes every time you went to the movies. So many times I accompanied my Mom & finally she got a set of pink dishes with a black flower design. They seemed to last forever. I too remember being Woodhaven 21, NY & sometimes people would refer to us as Woodhaven 21, Long Island NY. I also had a Virginia - phone number VI74399 - can't believe I still remember that!!

I too went to Rye Beach on STA trips. We went by boat and we had to wear our uniforms which wasn't much fun on some of those rides. And we had a neighbor that took us to Rockaway almost every week in the summer for fireworks. I remember The Big Bow Wow and the rides there too, but never did the caterpillar thing, yuck! I went to Cypress Pool too and besides swimming at Lane in H.S., did go there for swimming lessons once and the instructor almost drowned me. Didn't go back!! We had a backyard pool too. It was about 8 ft long and 3 ft wide and about mid-calf in height and had 4 metal triangular seats, one on each corner. We filled it with the hose and had a hot water, bucket brigade from the kitchen to the pool to heat it up some. And, before that it was the round metal sprinklers between the houses on the driveways. We were lucky back then, we could actually go to the airport to an observation tower to watch the planes and LaGuardia, or sit in the waiting areas and watch them come and go. I still love watching. I think one of the biggest and strongest memories are those skate keys and the metal skates. First the ones with the little hooks that clamped onto your shoes and then the bigger, metal round clamps that semi surrounded your toes. You'd skate so much all day that when you got off the skates you could barely walk. May not get back here today. We take turns in summer and today is my Friday to leave at 2. Company for dinner tonight gang. Got things to do. Have a great weekend all.

Every time I go back to Woodhaven I'm amazed at how narrow the streets are. The first time I took my girlfriend around she could not believe that I used to play football in those streets! But we drove around a bit and sure enough found a game of four on four (with an official QB of course)two-hand touch. We stopped and watched for awhile and I have to say it was a little ridiculous. But the kids didn't mind anymore than I did when I was their age.

We didn't get a real pool till I was already traipsing everyday to the J Train and work. The younger "USA's" got to swim all day. We had the little sprinkler that had 5 silver heads on it and used to squirt water. Before that it was the hose held on by a rubberband then tied to the clothes line. Believe it or not, it was great fun. Remember when a friend would invite you to their pool. It could be 55 degrees and we'd swim till it was time to go home. We'd be blue and shivering but swear we weren't cold! That's why my children don't have a pool, I'd be babysitting for the neighborhood. We go to the community pool, it's only $155 for the whole family, lessons included! Thank God that's not a fortune anymore!

All these Woodhaven memories has gotten me very homesick. Noone here says "Stoop" or "Pizza Parlor" or "Neighborhood" Here is what I can add to Summer in Woodhaven: Walking the long walk from the A train up 80th Street on the way home from the beach... How some park benches always seemed to have the best breezes.... Pineapple ices from Sal's... Walking around all evening long with friends stopping by Dicks Deli for a cold drink and a few laughs. Does anyone else remember how deserted the Ave was a few days into a heatwave? Like a ghost town.

We had those two foot pools too. And 2 1/2 foot and three foot - which was dictated by the age and height of my siblings. OMIGOD! The day we finally got a four foot pool!!! I am the oldest so my wait was the longest. The peat moss wasn't till later pools and for many years our pool was on the concrete too. I know where you lived now, and marvel at how many times our paths crossed. The difference an elementary school makes. I lived in the same area as you did, but lived in totally different worlds. We hit the fireworks each Wednesday night too with another Woodhaven family. Some of them used to post here - no more now. Glad you posted. Understand what you mean about the animals too. Although they were forced into training, I believe he did love them. Did you hear that he mistreated them? That would be so sad. I remember him from the circus and he seemed so tender with them.

Summer in Woodhaven was the best. I remember going to Cypress pool and the indoor pool at F.K. Lane. On Wednesday nights, my aunt and uncle would take us down to Rockaway to see the fireworks and stop at the Bow Wow for snacks on the way home. For a couple of years, we had a Caterpillar Village, complete with moats and different islands and we would pick up those fuzzy, buck-toothed gypsy moth caterpillers with our bare hands and keep them on the islands until them swam away. My sister and I always had to be home at an early hour, but we could stay out on the stoop just as late as we pleased. We lived in the far southwest corner of Woodhaven, but the whole world passed by our door at one time or another. Tish, we never used the peat moss in our little two-foot high pool; that would have been a real joy in our cement backyard. And didn't Woodhaven look nice when all the trees had their leaves?

Here's one for yside to get into the locker rooms, and getting to go swimming for like, 45 minutes? By the time we walked home, we were sweating again! PS 97 had that Center thing going (yes, that's what it was called, sometimes we called it Summer Center) and that's where we were from July 5 to the end of August, there in the morining, home for lunch, then back from 1 to 3. The little kids made pot holders and ceramic tile hot plates and the Big Kids (9 and up?) just hung out and played knock hockey and Snatch the Club (I have a certificate for that!) and learned dances for the Dance Festival (I specifically remember a routine to "The Girl from Ipanema). They've just started a summer program here in our town in the 'burbs, but there are so many counselers and people around, how to have fun? Remember, (Buster), there was one teacher for the little kids, one for the big boys, and one for the big girls. No matter how many of us showed up, that was it! Gunther Gebel-Williams, the circus animal trainer who delighted ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, during his three decades with the Greatest Show on Earth, died of cancer Thursday at 66. Gebel-Williams, who died at his home, never missed a performance during his career with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. ''Whether he was working with tigers, leopards, elephants, horses or a giraffe, you immediately knew that he was special because his incredible rapport with animals was unsurpassed,'' said Kenneth Feld, chairman of Feld Entertainment and a friend. In addition to working the center ring with the circus, the flashy performer was featured in TV specials and advertisements. Gebel-Williams performed with elephants, tigers, leopards, lions, panthers, mountain lions, horses, goats, camels, zebras and a giraffe

People are going to go into diabetic shock after yesterday. Don't worry...these happy rants never last too long here. ;) I remember getting in BIG trouble too. Breaking some one's window with a ball and running like maniacs (later sheepishly going back to make good, but still getting crucified for running), talking non-stop on line at school (Hey Sally, hell hath no fury like a NUN!), dragging your you know what too long after you were called in because the summer night was so perfect and EVERYONE was allowed out longer than you were (not true, but when you are ten and p*ssed off..) and Marge, I remember eating the crumbs off the delicious bakery crumb cake too. Punishments were being grounded, not being allowed out after dinner, and serious offenses included NO TV. There were worse ones for bigger crimes but lets not go there and dwell. Things were written in stone. If you or your friends got busted for something, you'd whisper to each other about what punishment you got as they were so common from household to household. Thanks for the fun, gotta run. Have a nice weekend, folks!

Held the doors for anyone behind you, and carried packages from the supermarket door to the parking lot for old ladies if they were within your sight. I loved sitting with the old ladies in the afternoon when they got their lawn chairs out by the stoops just to listen to stories of the "olden" days. Miss Marie, I missed on scully but had heard of it. Ten speeds were the coolest thing you could have as you grew out of your banana seat bike, with streamers on the handles, monkey handle bars, cards in the spokes attached with a clothespin, small metal license plate flapping in the back - some with your name - others proudly stating NEW YORK, and a Tony the Tiger bike horn/alarm. There were other animals too, but I liked Tony. I loved my bike and my first ten speed English Racer too.

Summer was riding my bike with the banana seat and monkey bar handle bars to 97 where we would hang out in the school yard. Sometimes Joe the custodian would go up on the roof and throw down all the balls to us. We were in heaven! There was a counselor at the 97 center named Dan. He had long red hair and was always munching on carrot sticks. He would play his guitar for us. I still remember him singing a song he wrote caled 'Eggy Anne'. We never had curfews because if our parents wanted us, they always knew where to look. Or, they would just yell out your name and you would run home. Playing 'Red Rover Red rover', 'touch football' sewer to sewer, and 'asses up'. Saying Hi to all your neighbors with ALWAYS making sure you addressed them with a sir name as in Mr. or Mrs.

It's memory time again on the Woodhaven Website!! Yes Marge & Tish I do remember everything you mentioned. What about playing "skully in the street with bottlecap? Some of the kids had neat bottlecaps with wax in them. I never did. Riding my "English Racer" (that was way before 10 speed bikes) all the way down to Eldert's Lane & feeling like "queen of the road". Playing with Ginny Dolls (pre-Barbie). The end of the school year at STA & being allowed to bring in games & not wear uniforms. Playing punch ball in the streets with a Spauldeen. Bought one of those pink balls recently - looks the same but now spelled Spauldine & made in Japan. Roller skating & lots of walking. Sometimes my brother & I would walk to Crossbay Boulevard & take the train to Rockaway. Going to the Haven Theater & keeping your feet up because the floor was sticky from the soda that was spilled on it. Going to PS 97 in the summertime & they had games & even fed us. I think it was called "Center". We never had much money, but it never stopped us from having fun. Keep on with the memories!!

Thanks for the memories Kimber, USA, Nostalgic (welcome back). I remember those rides that used to come around. And the first time I could take the train to Gertz in Jamaica to shop. Going to the Avenue for milk, bread or dad's cigarettes that were around $.29 then, and a kid could buy them. Going to church and buying a bunch of daffodils for $1 on Easter Sunday to bring home to mom. Or, other Sunday's, going to the bakery for rolls after church. Going to the bakery for coffee cakes, cheese buns, crumb cakes (that my sister and I would eat the big crumbs out of before the company came. Big trouble). How empty of traffic the Blvd. was on a Sunday, when all the stores were closed and you stayed in your Sunday dress clothes all day. Sitting on the steps of the Apartment building on the corner of my street and the Blvd. and counting cars by your favorite colors. Window shopping (before the gates) on Saturday nights with mom and hating it. Hanging out at Wilken's as a teenager and on 90th Street around the corner from Schmidt's where the love-of-my life hung out. Helping out a friend and her parents in the back of their deli, Leuband's, with the potatoes for potato salad. Getting balogna from the butcher. The Willard, Valencia and Haven movie theatres. Stoop ball, playing ghost (kind of a hide-and-seek game). Going to Equity Park when it was a lot bigger than it is now, but had to go all the way around the block to get there because my house was on the deadend street that deadended at the Park. Falling in love at Equity Park, a love I'll never forget. Going to Lewis' for all the "stuff" you needed. Buying my first 45 record when they existed and paying around $.45 for it. So exciting! Getting uniforms in Jack and Jill. Ugly black oxford shoes to go with the ugly uniform. The loud jets coming into Kennedy and thinking they were going to land in my bedroom. The summer smell of the ocean, even in Woodhaven. The night they foamed down the runways at Kennedy because a plane lost it's landing gear and circled over for hours before it could land. And, it did, safely. Henry wandering the streets. Laying in bed at night and hearing the el train coming and going. Going to Forest Park for a hot dog and carousel ride. Rolling down the "big" hill at the park on the Blvd. side. Going shopping on Myrtle Avenue. THIS IS WHAT THIS SITE IS ABOUT GUYS!!! GET IT! GOT IT! GET WITH IT!

We went to the Shore because my Grand Mother lived there. Two weeks in Grandma's smoke filled (tiny) house was a trip in itself. She saved change so we could play poker. Called it No Sneaky Peek to make it sound innocent. There was only 1 TV and she had a routine which included an afternoon nap and shows no kids or teenagers would be caught dead watching. Thankfully we'd spend the day on the beach and be exhausted at night. We'd go to the rides ONE night but of course it was never enough, someone would be crying on the walk to the car. Another night we'd get pizza but NJ pizza was no treat to Woodhaven kids. Thinking back I feel sorry for my Mom who spent 2 weeks in her Mother-in-law's tiny house with 5 children, what kind of vacation was that. I'm pissed that we could have gone to Cypress Pool for the day. I thought it was only members!

Buster, most of my summers were spent on the block too. We had loads of fun doing eveyday things outside. Some years we had a pool - some (very few) years we did not. Anyone remember having to wait till the pool was "built" and the peat moss that went under the lining to make it softer to step on? Funky smell for a week or two. The endless filling of the pool? Sometimes your neighbor would throw their hose over the fence to help out. My Mom hated cold water so we had to wait for days till it warmed up before we could go in and swim. Remember the one hour rule? Wait one hour after you eat or you might get a cramp and die? Swimming all afternoon till you were pruney and full of Kool-Aid or Wyler's drink mixes. I would refuse all snacks god forbid I had to wait another hour before swimming, and not get out till dinner was called. Wish I was swimming today!

We couldn't afford the Jersey shore or things like that. My summers consisted of hanging out in front of the house where we would play punch or stoop ball for hours on end. A treat for us would be having my Dad take us to Cypress pool. If I remember correctly the admission was $2.35 for the day. A real treat would be going to dinner at the Bow Wow on CrossBay Blvd., and if we were really lucky a trip to playland afterward.

I remember when we'd go to the Jersey Shore for two weeks. We were truly torn about being happy for a vacation or sad about leaving our friends. Two weeks seems like a lifetime to a kid during summer. We'd worry that the current songs we knew by heart wouldn't be popular or the friend you spent every second with would find a new one in your absence. What was worse was when my BEST friend would go with her family. I waited every day for the mailman with my cherished letter. Been thinking of little things all day, which is what this site was meant for. Thanks for adding too Kimber. Hope I never cut you on the line at Sal's

I loved the block parties. Nobody has block parties anymore like they did when we were kids. I was telling my daughter about how in the summer the whip-it and the king-kong rides used to come around for the kids. They don't do that anymore. I remember when I went to STA I couldn't wait to get into the higher grades because then all the kids would go to Sal's pizza for lunch on Friday's. They were always packed during the lunch hour and sometimes by the time you got your pizza it was time to go back to school. Then we'd go to the candy store right next door and buy the candy fish for a penny!

Horah for you USA: I also remember taking the rides to the beach and wishing I could stop by the pools by CrossBay Blvd....A time long ago when you could play Ring-a-Leerio and there was a 3block boundary where you could hide.. But unfortunately good times go and we can no longer take advantage of such an innocent time...

I too am sad about the shape of this site. I'm very proud to have grown up in Woodhaven. I wish I could have raised my own children there, but that was not to be. My girls are in Vacation Bible School here and it brought back many memories of The Pink Church (St. Lukes?) and the other on 85th Street - North of Jamacia. We loved Summer's in the "City". Block Parties, Hydrant's open for the day, the sprinkler at 60 park, Mr. Softee, a trip to Lewis' for new balls and jump ropes. Each summer being able to do new things, cross the street - the following year go even further unattended. Riding down Crossbay Blvd to the beach. Wishing we were those kids at the camp with the built in pool at the Crossbay Bridge. Barbecue's with coal instead of gas grills, lightning bugs, marshmallows! Shopping on the Avenue and walking into the Air Conditioning when it was so damn hot under the El. Being careful not to be dripped on by the A/C's as you walked the Ave. Slurpy's at the candy/card store at 89th Street. Plaster Palace! Come on people - What do you remember?

Tish: About the summer plans...Although we went to that ranch in Montana last year, and to NH, we usually don't like to go on vacation during the summer. Hate leaving our gardens. We have to have someone come in and water for us so we don't come back to dead plants. We work too hard and plant too much for that to happen. We have a wonderful back yard, great pool and lots of beautiful gardens, so who wants to leave that. We usually go away the week of Labor Day. We've talked about going to either Canada, Naples, FL, Maine or maybe back to Martha's Vineyard, or my fav, Hilton Head, SC. Tough to leave now anyway because of the reconstruction of the garage. It's almost done. Waiting for the new gutters and garage doors. We are now able to park the cars in the garage again. (Got my Camry back a week ago today. What was estimated at $10,700, actually became $13,300 fix my car). Once this is done we'll have to start thinking about the civil suit. Hate to even think about it, but while we don't want to make any big or extra bucks on this incident, we just don't feel it's fair to be out-of-pocket on anything. As far as the fear I still have and how it's affected me?.. you can't recoup that with money. And, you can't get blood from a stone. He apparently had just sold the Land Rover Discovery (the one he crashed thought my garage) to his mother last Nov. Our Ins. guy seems to think it might be to pay some other suit against him. This was his second DUI. So, if we go after anyone, it has to be his mother. We hate to do that, but someone has to be responsible. They'll need to take it out of his hide somehow. Hope you enjoy all your summer plans.

I feel sorry for you that you have no life or anywhere else you can go. I check the site out ocassionally to see if anyone has signed on who I would like to contact. But no one dares to leave their real name, so the original purpose of the site has been defeated. Yes Webmaster, it is time to pull the plug permanently. This is not a guestbook. There is only one piranha in here and EVERYONE knows who that is. You either agree with him and ignore his sometimes tasteless humor, or, you don't post. Maybe he is right. This is his site. His board, his words. This didn't start over the word ARSE as he says, but over the fact that I took offense to his 'once again' telling someone, that if they didn't like it, to leave. He has no right to do this for all of the reasons I stated below. This was not banter between a whole bunch of people, just auntee skell and moi. Christine also posted just to say it was about time that someone stood up to him, but the rest was I. He immediately told her to leave. How typical. This board is not just here for auntee-skell and his friends (sorry to drag in Marge, Tish, Mickster etc who all seem to be very nice people) but for past and present residents of Woodhaven. ANYONE who wants to post here should feel free to do so without fear that auntee-skell will post some childish replies that inflame and incite. His derogatory and crude remarks are not always funny. His humor is getting way past old. His material is boring and predictable. There are so many of us who are not part of his 'click', and it is about time we started posting. This is OUR site too. If Auntee doesn't like it, too F***ing bad. I will not attack him anymore, but I will defend myself on this board and anywhere else. I've never been afraid of the schoolyard bully. Not one bit. And just so I stay consistent, from hence forward, I shall use the handle 'buster' (I'll leave the prefix of 'auntee' off so as not to inflame)

Sally
USA - Thursday, July 19, 2001 at 06:02:42 (PDT)

Is anyone even slightly aware that attacks on any one particular person are commonplace at WOL? Has anyone been here for one single year? I have. I can't say that I posted in the early months but like a car wreck this place was impossible to ignore. I noticed that people used everyone else's names often, and even copied their past posts. I noticed that there were as many bullies as there were kind people here. I notice now that it is typical to single out one person as the problem and pummel them to bits. There was more than one person contributing to the fighting yesterday, even if the attacked was singular. Anti-Skell can dish it and take it, and often invites it - as he says "to stir things up". Some people like to fight, and yesterday proved it was a LOT of people. This stuff has become more the norm than the missing memories that used to fill the site, and the community it created for so many of us that had moved away years ago. Someone listed a bunch of names yesterday asking where these people were. I can think of a dozen or so more that will never come back. I guess the fighting will continue and while I'm not into it, I wouldn't dream of telling people to stop. This is just one more public place that isn't much fun anymore. Too bad the good stuff is gone.

There is no body to prove murder and Condit is spineless for sure, but that isn't a crime. Anita Hill had to tolerate sexual harassment at work. Ever get hit on by the office creep? As with most things, such as tantrums, high fevers and real estate, what goes up will come down. Most of us just wait it out and when the dust settles we post again. Never let it get to you - its not worth it. By the way, I like that Mother Goose is on your side. How can you go wrong with support like that?!

Oh, I see how this works now. It's all one sided. Got it. Also, I'm not ashamed to use my own name and hide behind phony names. Oh, and by the way, I'm not a Granny, I've not been that lucky, and if I were, I'd be proud of it. You people are really amazing. Yes, I'm on my high horse today and the soap box. I'm allowed. Ya know what Anti, I'm wondering why someone who bashes Woodhaven so much and thinks it so bad likes to hang out so much on WOL. And, I'm am so tired of people being "CRUDE" on here and then telling others, "if you don't like it don't come here". Great, great attitude. I'm tired of people using and abusing the free speech, first amendment thing to adnauseam, and incorrectly, I might add. It's just an excuse for people to get away with their vulgarities and they think it's ok. Well, it's not ok. And then you wonder why the Webmaster pulls us off line? You and others can be real nice. But, some of the @*?% that comes out on here is useless, boring, nasty, demeaning, and mindless. And, don't tell me not to come here if I don't like it either. I have every right to, as does everyone else, but that, and the first amendment, doesn't give some the right to be disgusting. Please, everyone, let's not share the @*#?. And... it's only my opinion!! Oh, by the way little boys, I am Lithuanian (and Irish and German).... Don't even go there, please. Ooo! The girl is hot today!

JOHNNY: In Memphis and Atlanta, things are much different than up north. The skells are more "under control". The people here that are posting this - what you call racial hatred- have seen first hand, their nieghborhoods turned into human sewage swamps. You are in the militay...my guess is you've been there for a while...The military; where people from every race are trained and taught discipline, self respect and teamwork. It's not like that in the regular world. An example: Here in Albany NY, homicides were virtually non-existant. In the last three months, there were three and a total of 6 shootings. Guess which neighborhood this took place in? In a place called Arbor Hill, that has streets with the names like "Henry Johnson Blvd" etc... . Step into the real world, where people are on their own, not disciplined. Watch the place of your childhood turn into a virtual third world armpit. You can't help but blame the offending race. The trees and the streets didn't destroy the neighborhoods....the people did.

It is my understanding that you no longer live in New York. You probably stayed too long. People in New York are obsessed with race. This is true of blacks, whites and hispanics alike. People want to blame all their problems on either the color of their skin of the color of their neighbors. Neighborhoods, libraries, bars and every other kind of establishment are more integrated in Memphis and Atlanta than in the heart of Brooklyn. And now you can huddle around your computers and congratulate each other on your knowledge of Civil Rights laws and the wickedness of the other side. Meanwhile, the world is going forward all around you. You're missing one hell of a ride.

Johnny---that is correct-your separation papers...I have to side with the others...there might have been some crime here in the sixties, but it was nothing compared to what is happening now. Also, the vast majority of inmates are black and hispanic-that is because they are committing the vast majority of the crimes. There are those rabble rousers(Sharpton-ites)in the minority community that would have you believe, that these minority inmates are incarcerated, solely based on race and ethnicity. These same Brawley-ites would scream racism,if these miscreants weren't locked up for the crimes they commit, because this vast majority of skells victimize, almost exclusively, their own kind in their own neighborhoods...I find this debate rather amusing, because, over a year ago, I voiced many of the same opinions, and was ruthlessly attacked for it.I called NYC,and Woodhaven, unflushed third world toilets, among other things...it is nice to see things come full circle...hehehe My advice to you, Johnny, if you do not like what you see here, do not come here...

WCBS (NEW YORK) July 16, 2001 4:26 pm Keep your eye on the mail. Those tax refunds you've been waiting for are on the way. Notices describing the details of upcoming tax refund checks were headed for the mailboxes of about 112 million taxpayers Monday. The first checks go out at week's end. For most people, the Internal Revenue Service notice will contain the good news about the check that’s coming and when to expect it. Some will find out they won't, and why. “People won't need to call the IRS because we've made the entire process automatic,” said IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti. The refund checks of up to $300 for a single taxpayer, $500 for heads of households and $600 for a married couple filing jointly are part of the 10-year, $1.35 trillion tax cut signed into law last month by President Bush. Bush administration officials are also looking at the long-term possibility of overhauling the tax code, said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. Some advocates of such an overhaul have long pushed for a flat tax, in which all taxpayers are subject to a single rate. Others favor moving to a consumption tax and scrapping the income tax entirely. Fleischer said the discussions are in “the very, very preliminary stage” and that a decision was unlikely in the near future. “They're looking at a host of ways of making the tax code fairer, flatter, more simple,” he said. The refund checks represent an advance payment for the new 10 percent income tax rate on the first portion of taxpayer income, which is retroactive to Jan. 1. The new rate will remain in place in the coming years.

Johnny Appleseed, the specific immigrants I referred to were blacks & hispanics. Check out the stats of the ethnicity of people currently serving time in prison. The majority of those people are the 2 that I mentioned (Skell can probably back that one up). i figure its just their nature to be violent felons, thus leading to the downfall of Woodhaven. Back in the 60s & 70s, there were some crimes and drug use was somewhat rampant, but crime was not as prevelant back then as it is today. We have those specific people to thank for that. There are plenty of other neighborhoods in Queens & Brooklyn that have suffered the same fate. Look at South Oxone Park, Richmond Hill, Cityline, Bushwick & Bed Sty. Does anyone see the pattern?!? If you were Caucasean, would you walk the streets alone in those nabes? I think not. Nothing personal, Johnny, but that's just the way it is....

"sec 8 housing" is a gov. code used to allow Spanish and Blacks (mostly spanish) to infiltrate white neighberhoods. Records show "section 8" tenents are 1% white,79% spanish, 15% black and 5% other (ASIAN,INDIAN and so on). The way this program works is a minority family buys a house in a white area using 1 to 3 % down knowing they cannot afford a mortage in steps "sec 8" to pay most of the mortage while the new tenent can wake up at noon and sit on their stoop till 3 a.m. playing salsa and smoking weed while eyeing your property and your women.

PS: Have you ever heard of "Section 8 Housing"? Sec 8 is a program where the fed pays close to 80% of the rent for the "poor" or single moms. In NYC alone, over 65% of births are to a single mom. I used to be in the rental business and believe me, most of the people that live in "urban" neighborhoods are having their rent paid by taxpayers. Oh yeah, I forgot, 95% of these poor folk have a 52 inch big-screen TV and a stereo that can blow roofs off buildings. But they're poor....

Martin: You're right. My figures may be incorrect. The percentage is closer to 75, not 70. Withholding TAX, FICA, Medicare, property TAX, school TAX, sales TAX, phone bill TAXES and Surcharges, electric bill TAX, water bill TAX, cable bill TAX, oil bill TAX, gasoline TAX, NYC withholding TAX, savings interest TAX, capital gains TAX, estate TAX, insurance premium TAX, tobacco TAX, alcohol TAX, ISP provider bill TAX, 3.50 toll one way, toll on the Thruway, tolls on the Garden State Pkwy....I probably missed a few. About the estate tax; Ask the farmer's point of view or the small business owner about that one. Why should the government get the money??? Why not set up a grant program for people who can't afford to start their own new business or market their new product? College tuition would be nice...Why should the government get over half a successful persons wealth? If they're going to take it, put it aside for a SPECIFIC purpose. Estate tax is nothing but a penalty for being successful.
Dan
UPSTATE, NY USA - Sunday, July 15, 2001 at 13:37:45 (PDT)

I have to question your figures. I believe Social Security, Medicare and the Miltary still get the three biggest pieces of the pie. Welfare reform of '96 effectively ended "the dole" at least on the federal level. Government needs revenue and the only way to generate that is through taxes. Our President has staked his entire presidency on the fact that he is going to reduce taxes. In fact, he's not willing to do ANYTHING about ANYTHING else. Oh, wait. He is rolling the dice on a hugely expensive Missile Defense system that unilaterally violates some very significant treaties. I guess the Russians should have asked the Irriqouis and Sious about our commitment to our treaties before they signed on with us. The post baby boom generations are going to have a huge tax burden just to keep Social Security and Medicare afloat. But the federal government is trying to soak one last good ride of reduced taxes out of the current prosperity. Worst of all the plan is to eliminate the estate tax, the single most important piece of the tax code. Thomas Jefferson supported this program so that we would not have an entrenched aristocracy that for generation after generation passed on huge fortunes to their increasingly lazy and inbred offspring. That's what Europe has. And anyone who's seen Prince Charles' ears or hear Princess Di whine about her "hard" her life in the palace was, knows that we don't need any of that nonsense here. I hope my children and grandchildren get to enjoy the Ivory back scratcher I plan on buying with my tax savings. But I'm afraid they will have to hock it before too long. PS-Johnny, thank you for your service.

c78: You are right, I never served in the military. I look back and wish I did. I grew too soon old and too late smart, as the saying goes. I believe taxes are necessary, but not 70%. Most of our taxes are wasted on programs that reward laziness and encourage the poor to have child after child. Two parents now have to work (in most cases). One pays the bill, the other pays the taxes and the kids raise themselves or are shipped off to a daycare to be raised by strangers that earn 7 bucks an hour. As far as patriotism goes, I'm the only one up here that has a Flag raised daily in front of my home. What's left of my earnings goes to the VFW and DVA. Yes, I should have joined...........

Johnny: My last post came across wrong. I have nothing but the deepest respect for all who serve(d). Actually, the posting was my usual banter about how our tax system is killing our society. If so much of our taxes weren't wasted on silly programs, we could have a better military. You can't make peace unless you are ready to back it up with war. Anyway, sorry my last words came across confusing. God bless you, your unit and the United States of America.

Dan, if you compare paying taxes to serving in the military, it is obvious that you have never joined the service. I pay plenty of taxes, but I get so much back. Everything in Washington DC, the FBI, highways, the best military in the world, etc. are all paid for with our tax dollars. I don't need a holiday to celebrate me; I'm glad we have our federal holidays so that we can celebrate the US of A.

It is so very, very sad for Mr. Wu and his family. I bought my pearl earrings and necklace for my first wedding (7/27/68) in Browne's. This is scary. I was supposed to go up to Woodhaven to visit my mom for her birthday on Sunday, but I just got my car back (after 8 wks of repair since garage incident) and because the windshield was smashed, the inspection sticker is in pieces so I have to get a new one. Don't want to be driving too far with it, so I'll stay close to home. And I'm not driving that honkin' big pickup to NY. Although I might scare of few people.. Well, these things can happen anywhere, but it's too close to my mom. Wish she'd move closer to my siser and I. Hey, where's Anti-Skell. We haven't heard from him on this. Maybe he's on his way to Woodhaven to apprehend and skellerize the murderer. Don't mean to make light...I really feel for that family.

Kimber, I did speak with the police and its up to them from here. There were similarities. I deliberately drove past the shop last night and it was still all roped off, stores were closed on both sides of the block, and there was a hell of a crowd on each of the corners. WABC was still there, but no other media. Just the saddest story of a fine hard working man. My heart bleeds for his family. I guess when people are permitted to get closer to the store there will be memorials for him. I was worried that crime would increase when a few of the Avenue stores went 24 hours, but never thought of a hold up at 10 am. Take very good care in the area.

Here is the report from ABC (on-line). They don't say Woodhaven though. They are lazy, can't get the correct name, just go by the Post Office Name. Queens Jewelry Store Owner Killed During Possible Robbery Attempt (Queens-WABC, July 12, 2001) _ A Queen's jewelry store owner was shot and killed as he opened his store Thursday morning. Police were still looking for the gunman. Lauren Defranco reports from the Jamaica section of Queens. Police were on the scene of the shooting on Jamaica Avenue for most of the day Thursday. Detectives were still searching for the gunman who shot and killed the owner of the WS Jewelry Store. We are told the victim, 51 year-old Stephen Wu, was well known and well liked by shoppers and shop owners on Jamaica Avenue. Friends and customers say he was a hard working man who ran the business for close to two decades. Watch Lauren Defranco's Report Just before 10:00am Thursday morning police say the jewelry store owner was in the midst of his normal routine, opening up his Jamaica Avenue store. That was when he was confronted by a gunman and fatally shot in the stomach. Witnesses say that touched off a chaotic series of events that led a local worker to break through the glass door of the jewelry store. Robin Triano, Neighborhood Worker: "I just heard the wife, I believe, screaming. I looked out my window and I saw her running around outside then a couple of store owners came in and one of them grabbed a hand truck and crashed it through the store window to get inside to see what happened." Lauren Defranco, Eyewitness News: "We heard that you helped the owner. "Tommy", Neighborhood Worker: "We could all see him inside, the door locks automatically when it closes. So everybody could see him inside moving, we just broke the door so we could help him." Defranco: "You broke the door down." Tommy: "Yeah." Defranco: "And what was he saying? Was he coherent?" Tommy: "No, he wasn't saying anything. I was just holding his arm, telling him to hang on." Distraught relatives gathered at a family-owned grocery store on the same block, while detectives interviewed other shop owners, hoping to obtain surveillance video of the suspect. Crime scene investigators searched underground for clues left behind and marked the path of the gunman, who ran from the scene. Longtime customers were grief stricken as news of the jeweler's tragic death spread throughout the neighborhood. Carol Costello, Customer: "I had a lot of my jewelry made by them." Defranco: "And the owner, what was he like." Costello: "Oh they are wonderful, wonderful people. I'm just so sad for the family." Police are now searching for the suspect. They describe him as a 25 year-old male, 5'9" tall, wearing a black shirt and black pants, with braided hair or dreadlocks. Police say he has a medium build and dark skin. Police say it is still not clear weather the suspect got away with cash or jewelry. Wu is survived by a wife and two children.

The state's highest court ruled that a delay of nearly 20 years in trying a man for his alleged role in a double slaying in Queens doesn't hurt the suspect's ability to get a fair trial. The Court of Appeals said prosecutors showed "good cause" for why it took so long to get Robert Vernace to trial. Justice Howard Levine was the lone dissenter, saying police identified Vernace as a prime suspect after the 19-81 slayings. The charges against the other two men proceeded -- Frank Riccardi fled and has never been caught and charges against Ronald Barlin were dropped after witnesses disappeared or recanted. Vernace couldn't be found. A detective working on old murders arrested Vernace in 19-98. Vernace had argued that nearly 20 years between the slayings of bar owners John D'Agnese and Richard Godkin would make it impossible to get a fair trial. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said he's pleased with the ruling. Vernace's attorney Paul Shechtman, former state criminal justice coordinator under Governor Pataki, wasn't available for comment. Court papers say a fight started at the Shamrock Bar in the Richmond Hill section of Queens on April 11, 19-81, when a patron spilled a drink on Riccardi's date. D'Agnese tried to calm down Riccardi and then asked him to leave. He allegedly returned later with Vernace and Barlin and both D'Agnese and Godkin were shot. A bartender at the Shamrock -- who later vanished, apparently out of fear of testifying -- initially identified the men involved in the killings by their nicknames. Though there were about two dozen people in the bar at the time of the killings, the Court of Appeals noted that "virtually all of them denied seeing the crime."

Who's my grandpa?
Sheila
USA - Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 12:50:16 (PDT)

It sounds funny, I know, But it really is so, Oh, I'm my own grandpa. I'm my own grandpa. I'm my own grandpa. It sounds funny, I know, But it really is so, Oh, I'm my own grandpa. Now many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three, I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her, and soon they, too, were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life, My daughter was my mother, cause she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad, And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother. Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run, And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue, Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too. Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild, And everytime I think of it, it nearly drives me wild, For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa! I'm my own grandpa. I'm my own grandpa. It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so, Oh, I'm my own grandpa.

I grew up in the 50's, like to hear the old Doo Wop songs etc., but there is one song I remember, not sure when it was from, but I was a little kid as I recall hearing it: Sung by Phil Harris (I susrprised myself just remembering that name) and it was "He's His Own Grandpa". Who can "sing" the words to that one. Did Bernadette Peters really die?

Also passing away, was actress Bernadette Peters...As you all know, she had a rather small mouth, which helped her keep her weight down over the years. However, as she aged, her mouth started to shrink. It got to the point where it got so small, she could no longer ingest food through it. Rectal caloric infusion was attempted, but failed. A specialist, who tried valiantly to save her, said her mouth looked as small as a crabs arse when she passed away.At death, she weighed 23 pounds,of which 14 pounds were curly hair balls...

curious, the thing that stuck with me is how her children must suffer all the publicity. The other thing that struck me is that she didn't need to die like that. Murder may sound too strong but manslaughter weighs heavily after the reading. Her life is fascinating to me, not just the sensationalism of her death. All my sympathy on your move. I hate doing it myself. Keep dumping about half my possessions every time I do it. Hope your new home is a happy one. Do you recycle and cut all the boxes up? Marge, you are making me hungry! The place we stayed is at the top of a mountain (next to Stowe) and invites the town below to come up and join the festivities. They do a huge BBQ, but we really aren't crazy about the food so we did one of our own... salmon burgers, beef burgers and a variety of grilled veggies too. We are big salad eaters and hit a local farm for the most delicious stuff. Made some spicy baked fries too. Did a traditional marshallow roast afterwards and since we were in the neighborhood - some perfectly fresh, made that day Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Later in the evening, we had gorgeous fireworks on the mountain top, standing directly beneath the explosions! We craned our necks back a little too much, and had to run from the falling empty shells, but the view was worth it. All day I kept thinking - this is NOT the 4th of July. It was so quiet all day (nothing like Woodhaven when you wake to M-80s and cherry bombs popping) but at night it was wonderful and the smell of the powder made me feel like it was Woodhaven, 88th Street Park AND Rockaway Beach all rolled up into one.

Tish: Glad to hear from you. We did some biking with friends in Phila on Kelly Drive and West River Drive around Fairmount Park (they closed the Drives) and stopped halfway at a watering hold called Mace's, on the Ben Franklin Parkway, for beers. Went back to our house and the sun came out. We all jumped in the pool. Had some drinks, munchies and later on a barbeque of beef burgers with all the appropriate stuff and sausage burgers with sauteed onions and peppers. Potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, sliced tomatoes, cumcumbers and red onion in Italian dressing and...corn on the cob. Peach ice cream for dessert. We had a fun day. Heard a lot of noise, but didn't go to any fireworks.

What did everybody do on the 4th? Vermont was perfect and gorgeous as always. We had a lot of fun. Sad when you come back to NY and see how dirty it is, compared to the clear air in the mountains. Haven't read the Venis book yet, but the family must be proud. CV wasn't the only smart cookie! Love to hear about Woodhavenites doing well. Sheila, when you're done with USA's copy - pass it to me. Also read the Dominick Dunne book JUSTICE. Great case coverage on the Moxley, OJ, Von Bulow, Safra and Dunne crimes. LOS ANGELES –– Defense attorney and former Army paratrooper Barry Levin, who helped handle Erik Menendez's murder defense and represented actor Robert Blake, apparently killed himself at a veteran's cemetery, the FBI said. He was 54. Levin was found slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle about 2 p.m. Saturday, dead of a single gunshot wound to the head, said FBI spokesman Matthew McLaughlin. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.

Kimber and all ... spent a few hours Tuesday on Jamaica Ave.. As per your suggestion, went to Pop's (only 2 p's now) for a really nice lunch from an extensive menu ranging from burgers to salmon. The food was very good and we met the owner ,who has been in the restaurant business for many years. His daughter was our waitress, and it was obvious she was skilled at her trade and was a lot of fun to speak with. For all former Woodhavenites,it is well worth a visit,as they have preserved the interior from the tile floors, metal ceiling, booths, counter with stools, huge wood framed mirror and dozens of old Woodhaven photos (some 1905) lining the walls.Next trip we will sample their assortment of about 15 ice cream flavors.Afterwards,we visited Lewis',where Mrs. Lewis was stocking shelves of the store that still carries EVERYTHING ... from curtains to orange juice squeezers. Driving back to 76 St.,my Mom asked me if I recalled a small toy store between 80 St. and Forest Pkwy. called McDonald's ,which I remembered from the late 1950's.

Oh, yeah....one guy shows up with a potato gun...darned thing shoots a small, red 'tater over a quarter mile. He made it out of PVC pipe, a gas barbecue trigger and used hairspray as the charge. Look at us spinning out in The madness of a roller coaster You know you went off like a devil In a church in the middle of a crowded room All we can do, my love Is hope we don't take this ship down The Space Between Where you're smiling high Is where you'll find me if I get to go The Space Between The bullets in our firefight Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you The rain that falls Splash in your heart Ran like sadness down the window into... The Space Between Our wicked lies Is where we hope to keep safe from pain Take my hand 'Cause we're walking out of here Oh, right out of here Love is all we need here The Space Between What's wrong and right Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you The Space Between Your heart and mine Is the space we'll fill with time The Space Between...

Curious--I would like to keep it simple...an overall total of exploded digits will suffice...the digit donor may be alive or dead-that is his/her problem, and I do not care...you might want to run a contest on burnt and/or exploded breasteses--you could categorize them by color,nationality,size-or lack thereof,hirstuteness,etc...give it a thought...Also, my sweet, would you like a part in my Christopher Walken movie,"Walken in the Rain" , described in a recent, previous post...The inquiring mindless want to know...hehehe

Jim: I visited the New Popp's this weekend, and the food was delicious! The place looks really nice inside too! They have the BEST Fajita's there! I also tried the new Spanish place recently. Tropica? The food was great there also! Enjoy Popp's!

my #'s-- 2 dozen. are you talking per person, actual digits, broken down by boro, or just total? and what about fatalities? one year i saw a woman lighting fireworks, leaning over in a scooped front shirt, and they lit, flew up and down her shirt. ouch! should we take a wager on burned boobies, too???

Whomever can guess the amount of fingers to be blown off in N.Y.C. this Fourth of July, will win a free dinner for 2.5 people at my restaurant,"Eat This"...(half digit scores do count---appendages must be blown off during the period of -00:00:1 A.M.,to 11:59:59 P.M. on the evening of the fourth. the counting of toes and penii are grounds for immediated disqualification. The decision of the judge--namely,The Anti-Skell,is final.

Curious----Be advised that a new Christopher Walken film is about to be released...Filmed at A.S.S.C.A.P. (Anti-Skell Services-Cinematics and Photographics) in Nobnoster,Missouri...Entitled..."Walken in the Rain"...It stars Mr. Walken as a down on his luck quadriplegic (as opposed to a lucky quadriplegic),who has just been evicted from his hovel...after being tossed to the curb,he decides to change his name to "Matt"...wait...it gets better,I promise...

It's 1972 and I guess it's time to head on over to the Daliendo's house to get my fireworks. Louie Rizzo usually has enough but this year he still recovering from that nasty train accident he had while coming home from 210. I think the plan is to go over to Lane to watch some fireworks, and then to 97. We'll probably end up over by baby carraige lane and then home. The Esposito's are usually good for a good fourth. Mrs. Luisa will be sweeping the street all day on the 5th, and hopefully no one will get hurt this year.

Yes, this site IS closing. Why? Why wouldn't it? This site earns no one any revenue. With all the name calling and trash talking going on here, the Webmaster is sick and tired of having to delete posts, and getting nasty emails from all you whinny ass people about being called names, or about having your family or friends name dragged through the mud. Close the damn thing forever, and seal it in a vault that even Geraldo Rivera cant open!

Hi to All (you too Mickster): No Mr. Skell, not hiding, vacationing last week with Mr. and the kiddies! Looks like we picked a great one. We needed jackets this morning. We also enjoyed Manor salads for Dad's Day and thought it tasted a little different. The owner of Manor (Helmut) sold to one of the "Hat Boys" his name is Mark. I thought the potato salad recipe was part of the deal. It was still good, just different.
