I remember you - Bradford Day III, who once went out with Lizzie Sullivan!!!!!! Remember Ronnie Wright, Mary-Jo & Susan Hughie Sullivan & Hughie Conlin. There must have been about 30 of us who hung out in Rubies then Behrens, from 1960-65 time period. Then some of us moved to Wilkins where there was Susan & Lorlee Devlin, Mickey O'brien, Ronnie Oldfield & so many others. If there is anyone out there from the old crowd, I'd love to hear from you.

I used to hang out at Sal's Pizza at 85th St. and Jamaica Ave in the early 1960's. Sang with 2 or 3 guys named Joey Anatrella and Bobby Sprague. We used the long crooked hallway next door to the pizza place to practice. Used to hang out at Rubies earlier. Worked at Lewis's for a while in 1962. But spent too much time up at the steps or on the road in Forest Park.My father owned a book store at 78th st. and Jamaica Ave, Woodhaven Bookland. We used to sing against Brian Hyland's brother and some guys form the candy store at 78th and Jamaica Ave.It's funny how how where you hung out made you a group. Any old doo woppers out there still singing? Wish Carl's Record Store was open again for just one day. I remember going to the Haven on saturday afternoon when every one seemed to be there. Those were the days. Brad Day- bradday 111@gateway.net

[To~Other End of Woodhaven] The Touch of Italy Deli (WHBlvd & 91stAv)was owned by Richie & Mary Bora. Their family originally owned the candy store @ that corner where the photo studio was/is. Ahh..I remember the egg-creams we used to get from that candystore. Me & my friend Teddy Pychewicz used to work in the deli for a couple of years. I remember the butcher (91Av&91St). The butcher used to give us all a slice of bologna every time we went in there with our mother to get meat for the family. I remember Appleseed's & the glass place too. I forgot to mention (in my first posting)....we used to hang out on the benches on WH~Blvd too, listening to Black Sabbath & Aerosmith. If anyone knows Christine McAloney who lived on WHBlvd and 88th Ave (in that big apt. bldg)and she has a E~mail address...tell her to send me an e~m...would love to hear from her after 25 years.....Thanks All~Dennis (still lurking here..LOL)

Greetings former Woodhavenites.....I've been reading this site for a few months now,but this is my first posting.I graduated from STA in '60 and Brooklyn Tech in '64.Attended the St.Thomas reunion in Oct.'99 and can't say enough about the great job the committees did. I lived on 76 St. near 90 Ave.and still keep in touch with many of my old friends such as Joe Leary,Bob Murray,Dennis McGuire,John Dempsey,Walter Kosmij,Rich Youngling,Steve Antonacci,Tim Lyons,Moe Pereira,Jeff Harte,Ed Navarro...Yes we are all alive and well. At the reunion shared many memories with other good friends who I had not seen in 20-30 years such as Tony Rizzuto,Cathy Pittman,Cathy Lutz. After high school our crowd hung out in Neir's--88 Ave. and Marshall's on Rockaway Blvd. Let me know if anyone remembers our crowd.

I grew up one block off the Blvd and one block off Atlantic Ave. Remember the bakery,& the butchershopon 91st Ave and 91 and 92 st? , and remember the Auto glass place and the soda/ice cream shop on the blvd and 91st ave? Then the soda shop was A-1 pizza (it sucked) and now it is a photographer studio. What about when Touchof Italy opened? And the Appleseed club ont atlantic and woodhaven....

Silly me.. I forgot to mention that I loved Mrs. Pilleterri's spaghetti sauce, and that we had best block parties ever (I recently tried to enact one here on my new block in Smithtown and it didn't compare and never will), Fourth of July (sort of like Vietnam), and was scared to death of Sky (RoRo's dog) and the Figuccio dog "butch". And in addition to my older siblings that I mentioned earlier, I also have a younger brother Glen that Michael Young used to call "Bum". He is now 25 and a NY city cop. And for my Mom & Dad, Betty & Gil, I'm sure there must be some old timers that remember tham. Especially my Dad who is a FKL graduate and coached many athletic functions at St. Thomas. I can't recall my Dads graduating year from H.S. but he is 64 and recently coordinated a reunion of old friends from Lane. The first "party" was held at my parents house and some 60 people attended. Any old schoolmates that remember Gilly Santoro Sr.? Let me know.

Oh my god! I just heard about this site from my sister (Christine) and brother-in-law (James)- Woodhaven's greatest lovebirds-now married 18 years. I moved out of Woodhaven when I was 10 years old (1979), and there I left the greatest childhood memories along with the greatest people I ever knew. I've managed to somewhat keep in touch with the neighborhood and who actually still remains living there. Now about to turn 31, married with 2 children. Most of the names and memories I do not recall from my generation, however some things sound familiar because of my older siblings (again, sister Chris, and brother Gil a.k.a "Gilly") What is familiar? The pink church (although luckily I never hung out there), Derby, Bernard,The Young family, Glen Gier, of course all stores located on the Ave., Forest Park, and a few bars (The Circus) which I got to experiment after visting back years later. What are my memories? Of course the greatest block to live on "89th ave.", P.S. 60, playing stoop ball, watching abott & costello & Dance Fever with Kathy Bear, swimming in my pool, Keithy & Steven,Miss Burchettes dancing school and the recitals, Sal's pizzeria, blah blah blah - I can go on forever. My dearest friends then were Kristine Steinecke (may she rest in piece - died of Leukemia when she was 13), Jonathan Marsh, Enza Pilleterri (still can't spell her name correctly), Maureen Young and the entire Young clan, Billy Beets, Kathy Bear, Jodi Greco, and Ro-Ro.I still am true friends with Maureen Young and Enza Pilleterri (see)- we recently started reuniting with our families annually and it has been a blast.Going back to the Youngs - The person who mentioned Jimmy Young above, couldn't have said it better. He would have loved this site and still is the greatest person I ever knew, too! Next to him is his brother Michael who tortured me when I was younger and then protected me in times of trouble. He has become another brother and I will love him forever as well. This may be hard to believe but recently while visiting my old dancing school teacher "Miss Burchett" who is ill, my sister and I toured through Woodhaven. We had pizza at Sals, shopped at Lewis's, and got to walk through our old house 84-01 89th ave. The lady that lives there is sooo nice to have let us go back down memory lane. I must run, but can't wait to come back and read and/type more. Good-night Woodhavenites! Don't have an Email as of yet, I'll keep in touch. Jonathan Marsh, I do remember you, do you remember me?

I was told about the Woodhaven site and have enjoyed reading the notes folks have been leaving. I lived at 80-66 90th Road. We were the second house from the corner.(Four brothers, Kevin, Jeff, Brian, & Steven) The "Big Rock" was a favorite hang out for lots of people. I have not visited Woodhaven in many years, but I am sorry to see the way it changed, and not for the good. Jamaica Ave is really a mess. I went to STA, PS 60 (Wooden School House)(I have a picture from the Second grade class) PS 65, and then PS 97. 1965 was the year I graduted from 97. I would like to hear from folks that lived in Woodhaven during that time. Some of the names I remember is Peter Kearns,(PS 97) Monica, & Christina Winch (lived on the same Street) Frank Kamine (PS 97) Vinny LaMagna (97) Jimmy Kessler, Caroline Hock, Ronnie Black, Gary Mack, Alan Brendle, Robert Campbell (91 Ave) Joey Backett, (90th Rd)Freddie Gebheardt (90th rd.)(not sure of spelling) Jimmy Dunn (90th Road) O'Fields (90th Rd ) Doreen Smith 78th Street, The Schwartz's 91st Ave, (85th street). As I think of more names I will send them in. If any one should remember any of the folks from the above dates please contact me. Regards to all..... Jeff Weisz

Grew up on 91st Street between Forest Park and Jamaica Avenue. Watched all the druggies walk up to the dome and then crawl back home. Hung out on 77th St. and 90th Ave. and then later on at the Circus Bar when we weren't in the City or on Long Island (Speaks, Hammerheads) doing the Club thing. Woodhaven was a great place for meeting people and making many memories. Went to STA and graduated 1976 (Anyone remember Sr. Concetta and Mr. Marinello?) Then went on to Dominican Commercial and graduated in 1980 (Anyone Remember Sr. Alice Byrnes?) Drop a line if you want to get nostalgic. Ciao!!!

Formerly of 81-06 91st Avenue. It was a decent place to grow up in, although I do recall hanging out in Forest Park one afternoon with Mary and we sat down under a tree and I put my hand down on the ground and felt a pinch, which turned out to be the tip of someone's buried syringe. Fortunately it was a kinder, gentler time and AIDS was yet o come. If Frankie Pallotta, Lyle Greene, Bobby Bohack or Annette Monaco ever read this, drop me a line or I'll tell your mother what you were like in grade school.

Hey gang...I wanted to reply to Dennis..I used to live near the corner of 92st and 91 ave...in the 70's I was just a kid, but I remember the "teen agers" hanging out there. We used to ride our bikes past them and they would be smoking pot and singing. We used to call them the Corner Hippies or the Do Da Do Do DOO's. (they used to sing this stupid song) I remember Mrs. Roth at PS 60. How about Mr Sinclair. he was a hard ass. The ROCK was on the corner of 91st ave and 80st I think. You also mentioned the Reilly's...there had to be more than one fam in Woodhaven named that but I think I know who you meant.

Playing ringaleavio,I-declare-war,climbing to the top of St.Anthony's Hosp. The "world famous" Manor's Deli, playing hooky@the Haven. No pizza like Carlo's on Jamaica & WH Blvd. Rubies,Lewis's the Twilight Zone bar (91st&95thAve) I have blurry recollections of the ROCK...someone E/m me and refresh me where it was Please! Remember the butcher shop at 91stST/91stAv? Bora's CandyStore at WHB&91stAve...later Marie's Deli. Religious Instruction @ St E's. The Adam's, Maresca's, Lugori's, Burns, Donavans, Wilsons, Kendalls, Clarks, Rileys, Wisomans. And i'm looking for Phyllis Amato from 91-05/or7 96th St(sis~Lisa, I believe) PJ mentioned Mrs Roth..had her @PS60. Hi! I lived in Wdhvn from 1950-1981 and it was the greatest time of my life. Graduated St.Elizabeth 1963 and Dominican Comm'l 1967. I lived on 95th St. between Atl. and Wdhvn Blvds. I remember most of what's posted except this pink church everyone mentions. I hung out with Kathy C, Denise A, Diane L, Karen D. I still see Denise & Karen if I get to NY. We hung out everywhere at one time or another.Forest Park,Howard Beach (The Limit),The square,Jam.Ave.,all over the place. Brian Hyland's little brother invited me and Denise down his basement once and we thought it was a big deal.I could write a book about Wdhvn.Take care.

Catherine - the gray house is yellow now. And yes, the pink church is Methodist. The Bell is now all boarded up. Believe me, the neighborhood does not look and feel the same.

USA - Monday, February 28, 2000 at 19:23:02 (PST)

The pink church was on the corner of 80 St. and 89 Ave., the northwest corner, to be exact. I believe it was a Methodist church. It was pink-painted stucco in my time;it may have been painted other colors at other times. One block north of that(at 80 St. and 88 Rd.) was a beautiful grey house with a wrap-around porch and a large corner property. Directly across the street from there (on the east side of the street) was a corner store which we called "The Bell" because there was a bell on the door that rang when you walked in.

Hello Woodhavenites! Hello STA class of 83 and FKLane Class of 87. I too (along with my siblings - John, Barbara, Peter, Maria and Victoria) have left the 'haven' - off to CT. My mom and dad (I think everyone knows JOE V.) still live in Woodhaven (we visit - and it is NOT THE SAME PLACE as when we grew up.) I remember playing wiffle ball on the corners of 80th St. & 89th Ave - right by the 'pink church.' We also played stoop ball on those steps too. What fun! I saw some of you at the STA reunion, although the class of 1983 was totally underrepresented - in fact, the 80's were not represented. If anyone is interested in getting an early 80's reunion together -- I'm all for it. Regards!!!

I would like to thank the webmaster for having this site it great to remember old times and to see so many familiar names. Woodhaven was a great place to grow up and Woodhaven “lore” is worth preserving for future generations… Most of what I know about life I learned sitting on the “stoop”. Remember: The Dome, The Pink Church, Henry, Bernard, Derby, The Haven, Trupners Hardware store, The Square, Lewis of Woodhaven, Playing Basketball in John Whymer’s yard. The Soup Bowl, Lewis of Woodhaven, The Parkway Diner, stickball, stoopball. Buying toys at Jason’s, Wilkens, Walter’s, and Tony’s Market, buying fireworks from Mr. Daliendo. The Cypress Pool the list is endless. How lucky we were to grow up in a place so filled with characters and fun times. I hung out at the Pink Church and lived on 89th ave between 78th and 80th Street. My Mom (Mary) worked at Mondello’s Bakery for years. I wish all the best to all of my Woodhaven brothers and sisters, You are all part of some of my fondest memories and therefore will always be a part of my life. Left town in 1980 to find my fortune as a broadcaster, my wife (Diane from 77th Street) and I have settled in Vermont. If you remember me drop me a line and we’ll talk about “the hood in back in the day”. louiemanno@aol.com

Wilkens Ice Cream Parlor, Billy & Ann. Rexall Drug Store had a soda fountain. Jacks Candy Store. The 5&10 Store. O'My God what a flood of memories. There were three movie theatres on the Avenue. The Willard, The Roosevelt and the Haven. Anyone remember the pink and blue dishes that they gave away at the Roosevelt. Forest Park where my brother played handball. The carousel which is now fenced in, the pony ride. The pitchers of beer and the franks. Where did it all go. Many good memories. Florence

I loved growing up in Woodhaven. Some of my fondest memories were of summer days and nights playing on the block (85 Street off Atlantic Avenue). Tag (from the telephone pole in front of my house to the Big Fat Tree to the Green Garages), I Declare War, and Punch Ball were favorites. I loved all the fun on the Fourth of July, when people didn't go somewhere else, but all hung out together sharing fireworks. I don't see that sense of community here now, and that is a shame. Thanks for the memories.

Hi from a wandering Woodhaven girl. My mother's family (the Proberts) moved into Woodhaven when our house at 91-22 92nd Street was built. We moved back when I was 11 months old. Woodhave was just a wonderful place to grow up--close to beaches, the wonderful carousel in Forest Park, and superlative friends and neighbors. May Dad (now 91 and living in a nursing home in NJ--physically frail but mentally alert) kept up the old homestead until about 1993, and I enjoyed going back every year. St. Elizabeth church became more beautiful every time I went back. My 2 brothers & I attended. I went on to Dominican Commercial & they to Brooklyn Tech and FKLane. I would enjoy hearing from any St. Elizabeth grads from around 1957, or DC 1961. There sure is no place lik home!

The memories of walking my kids in the baby carriage on Jamaica Ave. to Louies, Scaturo, Josephs pharmacy, and Mondello's Bakery...are so vivid in my mind. Those were the days. And remember that screaching halt of the EL as it came to the stop at 85th St.!

Nice people the Rubies. Was on the corner of 87th St. and Jamaica Ave. Great memories, ForestPark, Wilkins, Behrens, Sal's Pizza? (Still there?) Pop'sVee's next to Rubies (different crowd). Being able to walkthe streets with no problems. It was a wonderful life thereas a teen. I agree with the person stating that the Woodhaven business should advertise on the website. Everytime I click on Local business, it says that they are working on it. But I don't believe that is the reason for the decline in Woodhaven. Also, regarding Lewis' closing the store near Woodhaven Blvd., perhaps the family just decided to own one store. Nothing wrong with that. Perhaps the sooner the Local Business gets their website set up, the more business Woodhaven will have. It's the people who make Woodhaven. If people want Woodhaven to work, then we ALL have to work together and treat each other right.

I must admit that I am very disappointed in the local businesses in Woodhaven not advertising here. That is the reason for the decline in the neighborhood. No one supports it, no one cares,.Lewis' leaving lower Woodhaven was the beginning of the end....or was it the End of the End.....WoOdhaven will never recover
