'Tis the eve of the New Year and down on the floor, brokers traded and grumbled, "We're stuck here till four". So we'll buy and we'll sell as the tape crawls along, and though "Bubbly's" verboten we may still sing a song. WE'll recall and reflect on Two Thousand and ONe, a year with such horrirs, we're glad that it's done. We lost special people, some famous, some not. That sure makes us treasure the one's we've still got. We lost so much talent, but where to begin, Impish Imogene Coca or Anthony Quinn. Dale Earnhardt is gone, but he left us his boy. The other Dale--Evans, rode off to meet Roy. George Harrison left us to duet with John, now half of the fab four to Heaven has gone. Archie Bunker departed, Jack Lemmon went too, as did Perry Como, what talents we knew. There were thousands of others, some familiar/some not, and though they're departed, they'll not be forgot. The year began silly and simple enough, with last minute pardons and other dumb stuff. There was Gary and Chandra filling up TV screens, While J-Lo and Brittany were media's queens. A young lady names Grubman put her car in reverse, and some folks in the Hamptons say that made their toes worse. Tom Jeffords switched parties and out went Trent Lott, Tom Daschle took over, now he's on the spot. Mad cows frightened Europe, and hoff and mouth too, at top Paris Restaurants, they served, "celery" for two. Then, one day in September, our lives were all changed. Twin towers were toppled by men quite deranged. We all watched in horror, as those buildings burned, and the true meaning of "hero" was what we next learned. They wear soot-covered helmets, not tights and a cape, and they lay down their lives, to help others escape. Other heroes gave slogans from their brace hearts and soul, as they thwarted the villains with the message, "Let's roll!" At the Pentagon too we saw simple folk die, on that day in September when death came from the sky. Then before we recovered or shed mourning veil, some cuckoo starts sending Anthrax through the mail. So Congress shut down to clean up they tried, Postal workers kept working, though some of them died. But we rolled up sleeves and we followed our plan, we chased evil through mountains, across Afghanistan. The Taliban toppled, though they swore they would fight, in town after town, they just fled in the night. And, what of Al Qeada who boasted, "we're brave", well they started running when bombs hit the cave. Bin Laden made tapes, too many we think, the most recent couple caused his fortune to sink. We will hunt him and haunt him, till he lies in a hole, to terrorize terror remains our one goal. Let not this year's memories of sadness or sleeze, disturb you this day, just give your heart ease. Have faith that this New Year will bring a new sign, and believe in yourself, it will all work out fine. Just lift up your spirits and some fruit of the vine, and kiss ye a loved one, and sing Auld Lange Syne. And late in the evening as you watch the ball fall, wish yourself all the best, Happy New Year to All!

Something really great just happened. We just heard over our sqawk boxes the entire floor of the New York STock Exchange singing, "God Bless America". And they were all really belting it out. It brought tears to alot of eyes in our office and I'm sure many others.

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house, nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste, at the holiday parties had gone to my waist. When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber). I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared, the gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared. The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese, and the way I'd never said, "No, thank you, please." As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt, I said to myself, as I only can, "You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!" So--away with the last of the sour cream dip, get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip. Every last bit of food that I like must be banished, till all the addiional ounces have vanished. I won't have a cookie--not even a lick, I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick. I won't have hot biscuits, or cornbread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore--but isn't that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot, Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

Helen & Mont- Did Bruno's statue hold a pizza or a plate of spaghetti? I was in Woodhaven today and passed by Bruno's former restaurant, but nothing of Italian decent was in the window anymore.(Now an Indian deli.) My Mom recalled that a few doors from Bruno's and Beck's butcher was Garabali's fruit store, noted for their fruit baskets sent to families grieving a death in the family. Don't forget Knight Pole Co.,directly across the street ... the best wooden backyard washline poles until the steel ladder poles came into style. Wishing a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all WOL folks and their families. Anti - How about taping us the annual Pikes Peak New Years Eve fireworks show?

HELEN- On this site I have seen several people trying to list all the bars from FK Lane to Woodhaven Blvd. If you made up a listing of all the stores I'm sure you would get many helpers to fill in the blanks. We also will have to include the just off the Avenue shops such as Alex TV repair on 80 St. and Mike and Flo's fish store on 88 St. I'll put fresh ink in my printer to copy this list. Don't forget Ike's candy store, Rubie's Fun House on both sides of avenue and the small McDonalds Toy store near Forest Parkway as well as 'Irving Small's' shop. MARGE- Cooking, fireplace, cooking, fireplace, cooking ....girl you have to go to South St. for a Philly Cheesesteak to break up the monotony.(Pats or Ginos?)

Had a great Christmas. Ben and I took a Friday off just to shop for our tree, a few gifts, breakfast and lunch out, picked up some leftover greens at firehouses and gave donations for them. Spent that weekend decorating (and the next 10 days), spent Friday night the 21st with hubby's son & family, had 22 friends in for a party on the 22nd, crashed on the 23rd and 24th, hubby and I had our romantic Christmas Eve dinner in front of the fireplace, spent Christmas dinner with my family at my sister's house, hopefully spending a quiet weekend this weekend, maybe going into Philly Sat for the day, staying in by my fireplace with hubby and his son's Lab (we're dog sitting)Sun because it's supposed to be in the teens (brrr)spending New Year's Eve with our best friends, just the 4 of us), thought about driving up to the Adirondack's for a few days to x-country ski, probably won't. Received lots of nice gifts, but nothing like Anti-Skell's loot. Who could top that! TISH: As always, nicely said.

JOHN J- There are plenty of us here who remember the days you are talking about. What would you give for one of Bruno's pizzas, just out of the oven? ( I lived on 76 Street,2 blocks behind you) The old ice house on the 76 St. corner has been a fish wholesaler for 15 + years now. Are you are talking about retiring and staying in Missouri ? .... you could commute to Branson and be the opening act for the Lennon Sisters or Yackov Schmirnof (vat a country). A radio station host was saying today that we thought our parents were old fashioned for awaiting Guy Lombardo on New Years Eve .... now our kids laugh at us for watching Dick Clark. Pretty soon the MTV crowd and Carson Daly will be laughed at by the next generation of kids ... bring back Martha Quinn. HAPPY NEW YEAR to ALL !!!!

76-04 Jamaica Avenue was my home. Above Beck's Butcher shop and almost above Bruno's Restaurant. I was a delivery boy for Dexter Park Pharmacy, and Bill Anastasi was the best boss in the world. I'm with the Joplin PD now, and I can retire next week if I choose to, (but probably won't yet). How I miss Woodhaven, Olga's Luncheonette, Louie's Grocery Store, John Deutch's Delicatessen. Anyone old enough to remember any of these? Thanks Folks!

Enjoy your Christmas, at least you probably have snow. KML85; I don't miss going into Lewis's in the least. Yes they were cheap, but because their items were also lacking in quality and always outdated. We have a version of them out here, 'Cheap Johns'. Wiseguy; enjoy your Christmas and remember those that you know that are not enjoying it for a variety of different reasons (both right and wrong). To everyone else, Merry Christmas.

Jim of Mineola: Not cooking for xmas, but did have 24 people Sat night and made...chicken satee, grilled shrimp that had been marinaded in oil, red wine vinegar, lime juice, garlic and cilantro, sausage balls, spinach balls, clam dip served in a bread bowl, Mr. Ben's Guacomole (sp?), smoked trout and salmon, 2-3 other dips, Italian olives, 3 different cheeses, homemade bruchetta, cheese case squares and choc pudding cake squares, sprinkled on top with powdered sugar over a paper design so that when you take it off the design is left. Lots of wine and booze, lots of fire in the fireplace, lots of great Christmas music (no words in any), and many candles lit everywhere. Someone said it looked like a Christmas fairyland (don't even go there A-S). So...tomorrow is fresh ham at my sisters with sauerkraut, roasted and mashed pots, veggies, apple sauce and cheesecake, etc. Tonight...it's hubby and I and Rack of Lamb, salad, rosemaried red pots and a great red wine. May start with champagne first. It's our usual Christmas Eve or New Year's eve, stay-at-home dinner. Sigh! Merry, Merry all.

Merry Christmas all ex-woodhavenites out there. It's just not the same without that Christmas Eve trip to Lewis'. Even though I was always finished with my shopping by Christmas Eve, I'd still go in for just one more thing, just to be there with everybody else in town. I'm still going out to get just a few more stocking stuffers, but I have to drive to do it. I may run into a few people I know in Shop Rite, but there's no Avenue to walk one last time on Christmas Eve and run into EVERYBODY I know. Hope everyone gets something good tomorrow! Happy, happy!

MARGE- Manheim is good but I prefer my Christmas songs with words except for "Nutcracker" or Boston Pop's "Sleighride". My favorite Christmas CD is Amy Grant's "Home for the Holidays". One thing we can agree on to make you jealous is that Mrs. Jim told me to take some of her Christmas bonus to get Johnny Mathis at Westbury tickets for March. "In the magic of the moonlight ... ". Who said Mr. Gavigan didn't teach me to sing well in my choir days? I know on Wednesday I'll be drooling while reading what you cooked for Christmas dinner. To All: This is a repeat, but if you want to give yourself a wonderful present, go out and buy the Manheim Steamroller, "In the Aire" CD (or tape)(I think it's that one if not, whichever of thier CD's that has it on it). Light some candles, start a fire in the fireplace (If you have one), take the phone off the hook and put their version of "Silent Night" on, full blast and just sit quietly with your head back and your eyes closed. Just listen. It is one of our most cherished Christmas things to do during Christmas. It brings back the same images and feelings every time, of my childhood Christmas'...my dad, my mom curling my hair so I could get to bed before Santa comes, getting dressed for church, my mom bumping into Santa late Christmas eve night while coming home with Santa presents for my sister andI, our Christmas trees, the decorations my dad would put up on the picture window, getting read for company for Christmas dinner, the presents under the tree and the anticipation, oh the anticipation. Listen especially to the very end. It's terrific, but you've got to make sure it's pretty loud so you can get it all. I cry every time I sit and listen. My present to you! MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

Hi A/S - I think we've emailed a little some time ago. You live out west? Colorado? I read a lot of postings today and you've had me in stitchiz. And thanks Jim! I'd love to see pics of the sisters some day. I also graduated in '60. Sister Wilfrid was a living terror ! I misbehaved and she made me sit on Tablets next to her desk. I still have our class pic somewhere with each of us in the oval snapshots and Multz in the middle. Do you remember all of us kids singing loud so Msgr Multz could hear us from his room when his health was failing? That just came to mind so I figured to share it. My packrat mom saved so much stuff that I even still have my old STA report cards! And we also shopped at Gertz. Mom and I would always stop on the lower level to get the taste of the chop suey that was sold in cans. They'd usually have a table set up to give out samples. I loved that store . ttyl!

I had my picture taken with both of them together at the nun's fall craft fair in Oct.2000. If I ever invest in a scanner I will post it here so you can view the photos. What year did you graduate ..I was in '60? MERRY CHRISTMAS to all !! AND The JETS WIN,the JETS win!!

Rudy is a bit of a freak, but a hard working one that did come through in September. He seized those FBI stats to keep our hopes up (people do cling to that kind of information). I still know I live in NYC not Peoria, and lock my doors at night. Let's see how Bloomberg does.

Talk about cooking the books. I heard a rumor that there were 3,000 murders commited in a single day in our fair city not so long ago!!!! Granted, it's an unusual case but it should count in the statistics. The Dinkins Era numbers were bloated somewhat by a case of Arson in a Bronx night club that killed 88 people with one "well" placed match. I love Rudy, he kept us sane through September but there is something morbid about him breaking out Geek charts to tell us all how safe we are.

Mayor Giuliani got another opportunity to boast about the city's declining crime rate yesterday when new FBI statistics showed that New York is safer than all but 31 cities in the nation. FBI rankings put New York at 191 out of 222 cities in the number of serious crimes committed per 100,000 population in the first six months of 2001. Overall, crime here dropped 7.6 percent in the January-June period, compared to just .3 percent nationwide. "We have dropped to a number that would be the lowest we've ever been for crime," Giuliani told reporters, producing a dozen charts at a press conference just a half-hour after the FBI stats were released. New York outpaced the nation in every major crime category, from murder to auto theft, and Giuliani noted that crime's been falling at an even faster clip here in the second half of the year. He predicted the crime reduction for the full year would reach 12 percent. With an eye toward his legacy, the outgoing mayor also provided figures comparing his final 11 months to the same period in 1993, the last year of the Dinkins administration. The drops under Giuliani have been dramatic, ranging from 39.7 percent for rape to 73.4 percent for grand larceny. "There's no question that people have become more law abiding," said the mayor.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, Dressed in holiday style, In the air, There's a feeling, of Christmas, Children laughing, People passing, Meeting smile after smile, And on ev'ry street corner you'll hear, Silver bells, silver bells, It's Christmas time in the city, Ring-a-ling, hear them sing, Soon it will be Christmas day, Strings of street lights, Even stop lights, Blink a bright red and green, As the shoppers rush, home with their treasures, Hear the snow crunch, See the kids bunch, This is Santa's big scene, And above all this bustle, You'll hear, Silver bells, silver bells, It's Christmas time in the city, Ring-a-ling, hear them sing, Soon it will be Christmas day!

Jim - I went to PS 60. That would have been about 53 thru maybe 56. Had a crush on my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Crowe. Hated the principal Mrs. Sullivan. PS 65 belongs in the Schoolyard Hall Of Fame for sports activity. More stickball, football, punchball etc etc going on day by day than a person who wasn't there could even imagine. If whatever ball you were using that day went over the fence the familiar cry of "Little Help!" could be heard all over the neighborhood. We also used to drive the Sinese's crazy by playing handball against the wall of their house, which was part of the border of the schoolyard. Of course Jim, i'm really not telling you anything you didn't know. One of my favorite names of that past, and a real schoolyard denizen was John Von Derlin, AKA, Shrimps. Wonder what ever happened to him.

Abner, lots of people are exactly as you say - the same. What can you expect from people that are too dim to change along with the changing world? I see a lot of people that are different. You can really see it on the NY Subways and walking on the streets. There is courtesy and much less anger. You can see it with parents and their children too. I see a lot of elementary school kids of various ages and there is a BIG difference for them. There are a lot of morons and bigots around and they will never change, but there are so many people who have made their lives different after September 11th.

I'm sorry but all this talk about how we are different now from a year ago is Horsefeathers. People who rude on September 10th are still rude. The Subways are just as loud, the crime just as high and 99.99% of this country are still doing the same day to day things they did for months ago. About the only change that I have seen reported in a credible way is that military recruiting is DOWN from last year. That's right, DOWN. People don't want to fight in this or any other war, no matter how just our cause. Nothing has changed except for the lines at the airport and the prescence of American flags in place you used to not see them. As a country we are the same cynical self-absorbed lot that we have been for at least 20 years. It was different for about a week but I don't see it anymore.

Jim of Mineola: When we moved to Woodhaven from Brooklyn, I couldn't get into STA and had to be on a waiting list. Went to PS 60, then 65 and finally my number came up at STA in 5th. It was an accelerated class to help me catch up in the transition from public to private school. I had Miss Dillon. Then went on to Sr. Rosemary in 6th and Sr. Janet Marie (now Fitzgerald) in 7th & 8th. She was, and still is, the best. A great inspiration to me.

I'm getting dizzy trying to locate all these old Woodhaven schools. PS 65, a brick school, cut thru from 77th to 78th Street, one block south of Jamaica Ave. It was last used around the early sixties and was boarded up until being torn down for housing in the seventies. The old wooden schoolhouse was PS 60 and was located between 80th and 85th Streets. It was either on 87 Ave. (1 block south of Jamaica) or 87 Rd. (2 blocks south) My Aunt Gert, used to tell us about going there in the 1920s and saying it had no indoor bathrooms. Best guess is that it was torn down in the late fifties. HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Stuart Adamson, former lead singer of Scottish rock band Big Country, was found hanged in a Hawaii hotel room, U.S. authorities have said. The 43-year-old guitarist, who had global hits in the 1980s, was found dead on Sunday in his room at the Best Western Plaza Hotel near Honolulu International Airport, police said. Adamson was positively identified through fingerprints, The Associated Press reported. The Honolulu Medical Examiner said on Monday that he died of asphyxiation from hanging. Toxicology tests were being carried out to determine if he had taken drugs.

From today's Daily News.... Wrong Man Is Arrested In Queens Bank Heist By JOHN MARZULLI Daily News Police Bureau Chief t turns out the Queens man thought to be the world's stupidest bank robber isn't even a crook after all. Jack Schreiner was arrested Nov. 23 inside the Chase Manhattan Bank branch at 84-01 Jamaica Ave. in Woodhaven where he had gone to open a checking and savings account. He was spotted by a bank teller who identified him as the same man who, just four days earlier, passed her a note announcing a holdup and made off with $7,791. Or so she thought. Schreiner, 30, a refrigeration mechanic, was hauled away in handcuffs and released the next day after making $2,500 bail. But Schreiner had an airtight alibi. Detectives from the Queens district attorney's squad confirmed he was repairing a freezer compressor at the posh Le Bernardin restaurant in Manhattan at the time the bank was robbed. Criminal charges against him are expected to be dropped today. News accounts of the bungling bandit who returned to the scene of the crime brought instant notoriety to Schreiner and his family. "His parents have lived in Woodhaven for 50 years and he's lived there his entire life," said Schreiner's lawyer, Frank Murray. "Anybody the family came in contact with thought they had raised a criminal." "It's a travesty," said Schreiner's mother, who refused to give her first name. "I can't even walk Jamaica Ave. since this." However, neither Murray nor Schreiner's mother faulted the NYPD for making an arrest based on what they thought were credible identifications by the teller and a second bank employee who viewed the surveillance video of the robbery. Schreiner is 5-feet-9 and weighs 170 pounds. The bandit is described as 5-feet-7 and 165 pounds. Meanwhile, said Patrick Clark, a spokesman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, "We're still looking for a bank robber."

25 WAYS WE'RE DIFFERENT THIS CHRISTMAS 1. Last Christmas we were thinking about all the things we didn't have; this Christmas we are thinking about all the things we do have. 2. Last Christmas we were placing wreaths on the doors of our homes; this Christmas we are placing wreaths on the graves of our heroes. 3. Last Christmas we were letting our sons play with toy guns; this Christmas we are teaching them that guns are not toys. 4. Last Christmas we were counting our money; this Christmas we are counting our blessings. 5. Last Christmas we were lighting candles to decorate; this Christmas we are lighting candles to commemorate. 6. Last Christmas we paid lip service to the real meaning of the holidays; this Christmas we are paying homage to it. 7. Last Christmas we were digging deep into our bank accounts to find money to fly home for the holidays; this Christmas we are digging deep into our souls to find the courage to do so. 8. Last Christmas we were trying not to let annoying relatives get the best of us; this Christmas we are trying to give the best of ourselves to them. 9. Last Christmas we thought it was enough to celebrate the holidays; this Christmas we know we must also find ways to consecrate them. 10. Last Christmas we thought a man who could rush down a football field was a hero; this Christmas we know a man who rushes into a burning building is the real one. 11. Last Christmas we were thinking about the madness of the holidays; this Christmas we are thinking about the meaning of them. 12. Last Christmas we were getting on one another's nerves; this Christmas we are getting on our knees. 13. Last Christmas we were giving thanks for gifts from stores; this Christmas we are giving thanks for gifts from GOD. 14. Last Christmas we were wondering how to give our children all the things that money can buy; this Christmas we are wondering how to give them all the things money can't (peace, security). 15. Last Christmas we were thinking about all the pressure we are under at the office; this Christmas we are thinking about all the people who no longer have an office to go to. 16. Last Christmas we were singing carols; this Christmas we are singing anthems. 17. Last Christmas we were thinking how good it would feel to be affluent; this Christmas we are thinking how good it feels to be alive. 18. Last Christmas we thought angels were in heaven; this Christmas we know they are right here on earth. 19. Last Christmas we were contemplating all the changes we wanted to make in the new year; this Christmas we are contemplating all the changes we will have to make in this new reality. 20. Last Christmas we believed in the power of the pocketbook; this Christmas we believe in the power of prayer. 21. Last Christmas we were sharing / spreading / listening to gossip; this Christmas we are sharing / spreading and listening to the Gospel. 22. Last Christmas we were complaining about how much of our earnings went to taxes; this Christmas we comprehend that freedom isn't free. 23. Last Christmas we valued things that were costly; this Christmas we value things that are holy. 24. Last Christmas the people we idolized wore sports uniforms; this Christmas the people we idolize wear police, fire-fighter and military uniforms. 25. Last Christmas peace on earth is something we prayed for on Sunday morning; now it's something we pray for every day.

to Reenie, yes there was a Reenie on 88th road, the famous (or infamous) "Road" (with a capital "R") that's who you are believed to be, and that's who people are asking you if you are. So I guess we can all assume you are not Reenie from the Road.

And who is "Just Asking"? 88th Ave not Road, could there be another Reenie who lived on 88th Road? - I find myself trying to recall the location 88th Road? It is north of 88th Ave. (going towards the Jamaica Avenue, or south of 88th Ave, (going twoward Atlantic Ave) My guess is south, and that is only because I think 87th Road is one block north of 88th AVe. - Anyway, like anyone cares, but my I ask who is asking where I lived. Give me a name please, not "just asking".

I never saw you look like this without a reason Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you I never took the smile away from anybody's face And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child CHORUS: In a big country dreams stay with you Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside Stay alive I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime CHORUS So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered

USA - Monday, December 17, 2001 at 10:56:57 (PST)
Where is Curious when we need her....... Former Big Country Frontman Dies at 43 LONDON (Reuters) - The former lead singer of 1980s headlining Scottish rock group Big Country has been found dead in a hotel room, his manager said Monday. Stuart Adamson, 43, who had global hits in the 1980s, was found dead in Hawaii Sunday, his manager Ian Grant said. ``I have just lost one of the finest people I have ever worked with or been lucky enough to know,'' Grant said in a statement released on his official Web site. He was not immediately available to comment on the cause of death. ``Stuart Adamson was found dead in a hotel room in Hawaii yesterday,'' Grant said. ``I have no more news other than that at present.'' British media reported that Adamson had been fighting alcoholism. Big Country's guitar-driven formula helped them to a string of British hits in the 1980s, including ``In a Big Country'' and ''Fields of Fire.'' The band sold more than 10 million records, had seven hit albums and 17 top 30 singles in the United Kingdom, the group's publicist said. Adamson left the public eye and moved to the United States in the late 1990s after the hits dried up. He sparked widespread press speculation over his health in November 1999 when he failed to turn up for a UK concert supporting Canadian singer Bryan Adams. Born in Manchester in northwest England and brought up in Scotland, Adamson's early career began in Fife, Scotland, in the 1970s when he formed punk band The Skids. He went on to form Big Country in the early 1980s. The band earned two Grammy Award nominations for the 1983 album ``The Crossing'' and went on to tour with the Rolling Stones.

f.w.---I have perused the posts back to 12/01/01, and I have to tell you,you must be locked up in a home somewhere. In a short rebuttal to some of your accusations, you are the one who has attacked me, first and vehemently. My initial post to you was, obviously in jest, about the ear piercing, etc. on 12/05/01. Any one with half a brain, and those with complete ones, as well, who have read my posts for a very long time, know this to be true.On 12/06/01, you started with the personal attacks, calling me a shmuck, telling me to crawl under a rock, etc. Why ? Who knows.Maybe some repressed anger about having your mug rubbed in the mud at school on a daily basis.Any way,I posted to Link on 12/08/01,and you came at me 0n 12/09/01, telling me to "touch this...deeply".As time goes on,I respond to your posts. You see, I enjoy your empty-headedness.When I deal with individuals such as yourself, it is like dealing with rats in a laboratory. You all seem to follow the same pattern, and respond to the same stimulii.I never get angry, I am always amused. This is the truth. You also asserted that I never talk about my family in this matter. For such a very long time, I have always poked fun at myself, and the rest of my family. Mommy dearest, daddy dearest, granny Anti-Skell,the Anti-Pooch, Skellen, and my betrothed, t92.If you are going to make deliberately mean and assaultive comments, you ought to know what you are talking about,so you don't sound like a total arse.As time went on, sure I got a trite caustic with you.You ASKED for it.Then, on 12/12/01,you call me a moron,a degenerate, etc.You do this after you insult, me, and Only if I do you one better. You started with nthe viscious posts with me.Deliberate, nasty, and insulting. Then, because you feel you can hide behind your alleged femininity, you attempt to make me out to be the fall guy.If you are a real lady, you never would have said the things you have said here.Get real, get a life, and get an enema.

Some people attack viciously and lower themselves barely stepping out of the gutter to do so. And Mickster, SOME people get the job done quietly. You can't pick up a magazine without finding a list of holiday eating do's and don'ts. Eliminate second helpings, high-calorie sauces and cookies made with butter, they say. Fill up on vegetable sticks, they say. Good grief. Is your favorite childhood memory of Christmas a carrot stick? I didn't think so. Isn't mine, either. A carrot was something you left for Rudolph. I have my own list of tips for holiday eating. I assure you, if you follow them, you'll be fat and happy. So what if you don't make it to New Year's? Your pants won't fit anymore, anyway. 1. About those carrot sticks. Avoid them. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an egg-nogaholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello? Remember college? 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. You can't leave them behind. You're not going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards, mate. 10. And one final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips. Start over. But hurry! Cookie-less January is just around the corner.

Anti-Skell: I did the brush-my-teeth, mouthwash thing before the old Doc came near me. The pain came late that night...big time. As for the primitive decor...it's not country (not hearts in anything), it's not the Williamsburg (Queen Anne) look, but something more like the old colonial homes. There's a fine line between Primitive and these. It's lots of pewter, red or yellow ware. Get an Early American Life Magazine or Country Living and you'll see what I mean. I think Primitive decor for your Skellington's may have some bare walls, some black bars, a fine metal, twin size bed with metal springs and single mattress, topped off with a white porcelain potte. Your meals delivered on pewter plates. Let me know if you need some help.

Marge...I enjoyed greatly your posts this fine day...hehehe.There are a few points of clarification needed,however...First, you stated that you had your wizzies removed sans pain killers...just a few moments prior, you clearly stated that you smoked your last cigarette. I must alert you to the possibility that, because of the probable foul odor emanating from your oral cavity-due to your ciggy, and the distress it might have caused your oral surgeon, the black and blue marks on your chin might be a clue that you were indeed given a pain killer---quite possibly a right hook to the jaw...just a thought. And,the other point I would like to discuss is your decor, which you state is "primitive".Would you be able to elaborate just how primitive it might be.Cro-Magnon,Mammy Yokum-esque,milk crate and bucket,or some such other rustic diorama. The folks at Anti-Skell Services are always looking for new fashion ideas, both for the glorification of the human form, as well as for the comfort of the personal environs of humankind. Please regale us !!!

Tish: Good posts! Yes, it was Gertz. My friends mother used to work there. She had the greatest cloths. At around 12 or 13 I was in a modelling contest with them. Didn't win! I remember Jahn's and the Kitchen Sink, which Jim has updated us on here. As for those deer, I love to see them, but unfortunately, too many on our property. They're so cute until they eat all the plantings you've worked so hard to plant and spent so much money on. Don't do much in the theme's anymore. New hubby would go crazy. The only thing I do is a different paper, all the same for everyone each year. Because our house is somewhat primitive in decor, I do brown paper with raffia or something like that. This year it's silver with with either red or green raffia, or both on a package. Whatever, it's fun.

Good afternoon to all. I missed a lot of good posts yesterday as I had the pleasure of having had an impacted wisdom tooth removed and not up to WOL. Despite my loss of some smarts ,I will carry on. A few comments about the posts by Tish,Link, TPFKAMont and others. The great Jahn's is still there and according to a co-worker the kitchen sink is now $32.95 ...remember it was $3.00 when the token was 15 cents. Haven't been down Cross Bay Blvd. in a while but I think the Bow Wow has been take over by Russo's ... not sure about Pizza City, which always had decent food.Still there are Sugar Bun Bakery and New Park Pizza which was my crowds stop-by place 35 years ago when we returned from a weekend night at Rockaway's hot spots.Adding to the Jamaica thoughts .. there was Macy's hiding on 160 St. next to the bus terminal. You only went there for a very special occasion.Woolworths had a dessert that was a soft vanilla ice cream ( a cross between yogurt and Mr.Softee) and they poured the greatest chocolate syrup down the side of the tall sundae style glass.Gertz was the spot for Woodhavenite's to shop and my Mom had a 'revolving charge account'there. As a good customer she would get in the mail the Christmas catalogue with the biggest selection of toys at the time.Wasn't there also a sporting goods store called VIM ? For some reason I can't recall the J train ever being the #15 ... maybe that fact was stored in my wisdom tooth. The Patio Club was the local landmark where I remember my cousin's wedding reception was held there in 1956 and my grandparent's 50th anniversary in 1959.My STA classmate Don Catapano was the owner after his Dad died, sadly we also lost Don about 15 years ago. Regarding the french fries from Mike and Flo's 87 St fish store ... they were THE BEST. The health issue from the fat was nothing compared with the wrath of the nuns if you had fries grease on your loose leaf paper. Our bolonga came usually from Ernie's just off 80 St.... free slice to well behaved kids. We also went to Willie the Butcher next to Neir's Bar on 78 St.. I'm getting hungry ... time for some mushy food.

Gertz was the only department store my mother would shop at. On many a saturday, she would drag me to Crescent St. to take the number 15 train to 160th St. After a boring day of shopping ( 93% in womens depts. -7% toy dept.), we would head to W.T Grants across the street for a suspicious looking hot dog and a watery orange drink. Don't remember which store in Jamaica it was, but my parents would take me and my sister down to see Santa Claus. I remember asking my dad, how do you know which is the real Santa, and he told me that "The real Santa has grey eyebrows", so from then on I always knew if I was seeing the real Santa. Gene Autrey's, "Rudolph" was always playing also. He had one of the purest voices, still to this day, that I have ever heard. My sister and I would always go up to Sam's candy store, by Associated on Jamaica Ave. on Christmas Eve. and have hot chocolate, while our parents put our presents under the tree. One Christmas, our cat, Inky, pulled the whole tree down. What a mess, but nobody would get mad at him. The bologna slices at the butcher, on the north side of Jamaica Ave. at, I think 86st, are still the best bologna I have ever tasted, and the french fries at the little shop just south of Jamaica Ave., at I think 87st, were pure fat, and unbelievable. That's all for now.

Thanks, glad you liked that one. It was a marvelous place, right? Anyone remember Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor and it's Kitchen Sink? The mini one man band that played hurdy gurdy music while you waited for your ice cream? Reading the walls of who sat in the booth before you? The Patio Club when it was a swank place to go to a wedding (I was too young to go but remember seeing the favors afterwards and thought it was glamorous)? White Castle when you were served in the parking lot by an attendent who hooked a tray off the driver's side window? Paper boys for the NY Daily News in the early morning hours and paper boys in the late afternoon for the Long Island Press? The Bow Wow and Pizza City on the way to or from Rockaway (you never had to say beach). PLAYLAND! Bazaars that ran for nights, maybe over two weeks, and made batches of cotton candy and zeppoles with rides that never collapsed. Fireworks that everyone could enjoy just by looking over at the block next to you or down 91st Avenue. Shops...lots of them with owners you knew that had been there for years, perhaps generations. Very few large markets. You went to the Fish store, the Vegetable store and the butcher and baker to take care of the groceries not to Pathmark. Kids got free slices of bologna, a handful of grapes or cherries and a cookie for behaving while the shopping was at hand. Lots of bikes parked outside the library and not stolen when you came back out. Some homes had fir trees on their property and those folks were the luckiest of all because they had a bit Christmas all year. I'm done. What have you got?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev'rywhere you go; Take a look in the five-and-ten, glistening once again With candy canes and silver lanes aglow. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in ev'ry store, But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be On your own front door. A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev'rywhere you go; There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

A special good luck and get well soon to a resident WOLer. I know you will be out of commission for a few days and the place won't be the same without you...or perhaps not. Did you ever get that laptop you were talking about? Behave yourself with the nurses - don't forget they are in charge of those meds!!

Nice to see you, Marge. Great story! Looks like you made magic for all your loved ones. The picture came out black around Santa and your niece because the flash was close and was the chief source of light against what might be a dark background. Happens all the time when I take pictures of lit birthday cakes in a dark room. All you see is the cake top where the light hits. I remember going to see Santa at Gertz (or was it Gimbals?) in Jamaica. There was a ladies tea room which served luncheon only. Lots of hats and gloves in there. My favorite grown-up choice on the menu was a strawberry parfait which was lady fingers, vanilla ice cream and the fruit. What is better than whipped cream and a cherry to a little kid? Walking through the Christmas Village on those ramps was exciting although Santa was generally creepy. Not one picture of me looking anything less than suspicious at Santa. It was a great time though and a yearly Christmas ritual. I loved hoarding my allowance to buy gifts for my family when I was young too. There were a lot more choices on the Avenue then, and my brother and I would go in the evenings when it was still safe for kids to be out. We would end our spree with an order of fries from Chicken Delight and hot chocolate if it was really freezing. Typical kid combo - grease and sugar! A new family tradition is going to see the Holiday Lights at the Bronx Zoo. This is our third year in a row, and it is great! The lights are lit at 5:00 pm and the place closes at 9. The general atmosphere is Christmas Carnival, with ice sculptures, make your own S'mores, characters for children and performance artists/dancers on stilts (something new every year) and real live reindeer. I know nothing lasts forever but its nice to post here from time to time. Take care and let us know what this year's theme will be!

Ho Ho Ho! I'm with you. I'm going to bring back old Christmas memories and posts, but don't count on it starting anything or lasting. My grandfather took me to Radio City every holiday. Christmas was especially great. I'd get the whole new outfit; coat, leggins, hat and muff (a tubular hand warmer for those who are too young to remember) all to match. And, the new dress with a slip, socks and everything to match. We'd stand on those long lines that wrapped around the block a few times. It was sooo cold. And, the show was amazing. The colors, live animals and Santa, of course, coming out on this huge sled at the end. What a sight for these small eyes. And, of course there was the trip to the big Dept. store for the picture with Santa and the Saks windows that I could barely see at 4 or 5 yrs old. Mom doing toy Christmas shopping at Jason's. She, and many others, used to do lay-a-ways. She'd go pick up the toys after we were in bed. The store would be open until midnight. She was lugging home a few large bags one night around 11:30 when she came around the corner onto the Blvd. and ran smack into Santa himself. He gave her a hearty HO,HO,HO, wished her a Merry Christmas and went on his way. I think she was totally stunned. She apparently came home laughing and never forgot it. When I got married, I would do a different theme each Christmas. One year Teddy Bears, one sleds, one candy canes, one all silver or gold. That meant tree ornaments, wrapping paper, decorations. Not overdone to be obnoxious, just a few things here and there. One Christmas was Santa Clauses. I hired a guy for $50 to come to the house just after our dinner and just before gift opening time. I wrapped a small gift and tagged them for all in the house, including myself and left them outside. Santa picks them up and brings them in with him. He showed up right on time. I told my niece (about 6 at the time) and nephew (about 8)to answer the door. You should have seen their faces, and the adults too. Santa was perfect and gorgeous. He picked up my niece and we have the greatest picture of him holding her. The whole background went black for some reason and it's only them in the picture. My at-the-time husband didn't know about this and was upstairs in the bathroom. The kids ran upstairs and kept knocking on the door and yelling to him telling him that Santa was here and he had to come down right away, and he just said, yeah, sure. When he came down the steps and saw Santa, he looked at him, then me, then back to him and me again with the biggest, "Where the hell did he come from" look you ever saw. It was so funny. Santa came into the family room, which was a big conversation pit, and took pictures with each kid and female on his lap and shook hands with all the men and read a story to the kids that even the adults sat and quietly and intently listented to. In the meantime, the stereo had been on and I had candle lights in the windows and you could see the flood lights ouside in the birch trees. Wouldn't ya know, it starts to snow and on the stereo comes Bing Crosby singing, "White Christmas". It wouldn't have happened better if I'd try to plan it all...which I didn't. To this day, even the adults that are still with us, never forgot that night. It was truly the best Christmas we all ever had and will never forget since most of us had very poor and meager Christmas' when we were young. (And, no, I didn't make all this up. It is all true).

I have it on good authority that a pyromaniac is heading this way...he thinks the place is a broken toy he can destroy! Any holiday musings to offer? Any reflections on shopping, tradition and family stories? Big shout out to WOLers past and present.

To get New Yorkers into the holiday shopping spirit, Queens merchants have teamed up to promote one another's businesses by giving customers maps of 10 local shopping districts. With help from the Queens County Overall Economic Development Corp., retailers will hand out more than 30,000 maps showing commercial strips in neighborhoods such as Woodhaven, Jackson Heights and Jamaica. Retail business in Queens has dropped significantly since Sept. 11, and the slowing economy has hurt many merchants. The colorful maps will show shoppers where they can buy discounted holiday gifts — from gourmet chocolate to toys — and where to dine or dance. The maps also include a raffle coupon good for a chance to win a CD player. "It's a great boon to our shopping district because we need the added push," said Maria Thomson, executive director of the Woodhaven Business Improvement District. "We need that exposure, and this would give it to us."

LatinCutie: You're in a Squad?!!!! No Way! From your postings, I'm sure most defense attys would have a field day with your reports! But then again, you probably are in a squad, a detective, and probably should be up for grade much sooner then most. After all, you are a: A female, and b: a minority. One last thing, don't use police jargon when posting here, you don't impress many by doing that.
Let's be careful out there.
