I grew up in Woodhaven in the mid 40's-60's. I went to the ORIGINAL PS 60- an
old wooden building on 87th rd btw 80St & 85St. Next was PS65 btw 77 st &78st.
Boy Scouts at St Lukes Church on 85St & 87rd was always followed by stopping at
Maxi's candy store on 80st near 87rd for his famous 'egg cream'.There were local
stores on neighborhood corners like the Bohack at 80st &90 ave and a butcher shop
at 80st and 90rd and a bakery across the street, and a family hardware store around
the block from the butcher.Pleggies Drug store was at 80th &88st> I think they
sold out to Zagamis (sp) which later located at Jamaica Ave & Forest Parkway.
There was a Fuller Brush man Al Dyke had a narrow store on 80 st near 88 ave.Nier's
Bar on 78St was a famous watering hole and the bakery on Jamaica Ave & 80st had
the best stuff. The Haven Theater had cartoon specials on the weekends for kids.
I remember a record shop a few doors down and the owner that smoked a pipe. :
I live in Florida now and I guess most of those things are long gone and forgotten
along with Cypress Pool and Dexter Park demolition derbys. : Is there anyone that
shares these memories?

Just a little point of interest.I was recently in saratoga and a horse named CIRCUS
BAR ran in one of the races. He did not win that day but in fact only race he ever
did win was last year on the same track.A hunch players delight if you are from
Woodhaven, but in fact the owner of the horse was indeed from woodhaven and it
is no coincidence,The horse was indeed named after the bar.

I spent all my summers a a little place my family owned in Sound Beach Long Island,
the next town east is Rocky Point, on the North Shore about 7 miles East of Port
Jefferson. These two areas were developed in 1929 as summer communities for people
in the city to go to to beat the heat. They were started as a sales gimmick during
a circulation war between the Daily News and the Daily Mirror. Lots were $89.50
each with a years subscription. Most everyone out there came from Brooklyn or Queens
(most from Queens) Did many of you Woodhavenites go to either town?

To Jim Of Mineola Re:8/25 post. I graduated RHHS in 1963. My older sister graduated
in 1955, and my father and my aunts went to RHHS as well. The year that I graduated
grammer school PS97 in 1959 they changed the school zone boundaries and that meant
I would have to go to FKLane. There was a girl one year ahead of me Olga that
lived a few doors down that was already in RHHS. At that time Lane was having
race riots and had a bad rep. I used my aunt's address on the east side of Woodhaven
Blvd so I could go to RHHS. After my first year my mother died at home of cancer
and my Dad and I moved temporarily to 91 Ave btw 81 & 82 Sts., then to an apt.
on 98 st N of Jamaica Ave and around the corner from the Willard. From 80th St
area I knew Billy Sohan, Linda Harder, Fances True,The Kaiser sisters,Joe Giacalone
, Mario Dimaria (his father had the cleaners at 78 and Rockaway). The Hawthorne
family-everyone over 6'- I hung out with Robert, John VonDerlin, Boy Scouts at
St Lukes-troop 29.I delivered papers at 530AM from ATlantic just E of 80st, down
to my route near St Sylvesters. From 98 St area I knew Billy Goettinger, John
Holler,Bruce Gettler (his Dad was a doctor in RH), The Farrell bros Richie & Dennis,
Wayne Duperosel. After dodging my draft notice in 1965 by enlisting in the Navy,
I returned home after 4 yrs to 98 st, took over the apt with my wife, then moved
in 1973 to a house we bought on Park Place in Floral Park.

Jim uh no, actually I'd rather not even think about it. By the way, have there
been any late night poker games since I last saw you guys. It was a little bit
of a culture shock to me. Poker games out here with the boys are usually ending
about when your's began, couple years ago. Guess i'm getting older, but a short
while back Arlene and I were talking 'bout the possibility of moving back, at
least seasonally. The first thing I thought of was - I don't know if i'm up to
the all night poker games. Guess it's just a matter of conditioning. I can get

sister got a job out of NY and I told her I'd help her out with him because she
had to give up a couple of weeks vacation because of the new job. We had a blast.
Monday, took him to the Battleship NJ and that night went to the Camden Riversharks
game. Tuesday, had a picnic in the Azalea Garden behind the Art Museum in Philly,
played cards and then walked to the Franklin Institute for the IMAX theatre showing
of The Ultimate X games. Wednesday, went to Lancaster for a walk throught a 2.5
mile corn field maze then took a buggy ride to an authentic Amish farm. Thursday,
went to Crystal Cave in Kutztown, played minature golf after the tour and had
an ice cream cone at the ice cream parlor there. Friday, brought him into my office
to surprise hubby (we work together) and to see my office. Then went to the Philly
Zoo and then took a huge, helium balloon ride (400 ft up). Then picked up hubby's
son's dog (who we have this week). My nephew was thrille to have the dog with
us. We played lots of card games and a week long game of Monopoly and he was in
our pool playing with the pool basket ball net. He beat me at everthing. It was
really fun playing mommy. Something I've never had the privilege of being. By

Babyboomer-Hope you had fun in Orlando! We love those tourist $'s here. I love
reading all the great memories you all have. I don't seem to remember quite so
vividly, but it was a great time. The 25cent burgers were a great alternative
to the PS 97 lunchs. I remember going with a friend at lunch time to ride the
elevators in the apartment houses on Forest Parkway. It was great fun until someone
told the principal and he called our parents. I lived in Woodhaven when my first
son was born and it was wonderful to push the baby carriage up to "the avenue".
I would meet friends, stop for icecream. The baby shops had bins out on the sidewalks
so that we didn't have to leave the baby or take them out of their carriages.
It was never as good after I moved out to LI and here in FL they never heard of
these things. I "hung out" in Wilkens in Woodhaven and Wilkens in Cypress Hills.
They were brothers I believe. Ken, I remember a Christine Dorfler, I think. Were

individuals and organizations as well as companies. I do not want those making
our laws to owe ANYTHING to ANYONE. My objection to Lazio getting the high paying

of a favor for giving a contract with OUR money. If I watch an overpaid ballplayer
or movie actor, it is my choice. Now for Rudy - he did an incredible administrative
job following 9/11 but that doesn't change the fact of him being an egotistical
a**-hole who screws other women in front of his family (with 2 preteen kids) and

to DEALS, DEALS and more DEALS. These Congressmen and women talk about hating
each others gutts, but come to a voting pact, not to help America, but to make
each other look good and get their cushy seat back for another term. Regarding
election contributions, as long as medium and large companies are allowed to stuff
the pockets of our government officals, both Dem. and Rep., in return for huge

Both Bush and Clinton did more than most to avoid service. Anyone that preferred
not to serve, and had the means by either money, brain power or connections, got
out of it. I don't blame the Bush family for wanting to protect their son from
war anymore than I blame Clinton for jumping the ropes to avoid duty. As any child
of the sixties knows, most of us had to serve and it was unavoidable without power
to avoid "legalities". Many more of us would have stepped this war aside if we
had the resources.
And yeah, I love my country

C78....... There was nothing slimmy about the way BUSH got out of serving his
country. Many of us children of the 60's did it exactly the same way.(serving in
the NATIONAL GUARD or RESERVES)It was the way B.J.(BILL JEFFERSON)got out of the
draft that we find offensive. He lied to his draft board when his draft notice
came saying he was going to join ROTC and then never did and writing a letter
to Sen. HALFBRIGHT of ARK.(fellow RHOADE SCHOLAR)pleading to get him out. Then
he finds out his draft number is to high so he was safe. While us regular military
didn't particularly think the Reserve should get a year off the time for that
mail strike in 1968 THEY DID SERVE and get all the benefits the regulars get.Just
for the record YES I did serve in vietnam from OCT.1968 to OCT.1969 as an aircraft

Miss Marie - Welcome back - When you hung out at the Blue Corner was it still
owned by Pete and Gretta? My Mom used to send me up there with a quarter for a
malted milk shake to bulk me up a little .... well it worked, a lot. Was Bernard

Anyone interested in discussing this topic: Throwing it up for grabs. "Genes vs.
environment" Had this discussion over the week end. The (2) schools of thought,
what would be "your" choice that most effects kids. Espically those in an inner
city/urban areas where young children know no other way of life. Friend of mine's
daughter did an internship in DC this summer, Public Defenders Office. Was that
an eye opener for a kid living a pristine life in the suburbs.

Tish...Auntie Anti-Skell had given the Anti-Lad a damn fine pair of boots for
playing in the snow...they were lined on the inside with thumb tacks to make sure
they didn't slide off,and on the outside, the soles were lined with barbed wire,so
as not to slip and fall on the snow and ice. These boots were made of tanned rhino
nostril material, and were treated with tar to ensure that they were leakproof. When
we were done playing in the snow,Auntie Anti-Skell would have me come in the house, and
make a nice steaming hot cup of some brown stuff...I don't think it was chocolate...smelled

Marge, the big black boots were styled for boys and men. I remember them well.
Girls had the crayon red boots, sometimes yellow. Those boots pulled on and you
wore your shoes inside them. In winter (not rainy weather) there were different
boots which had fleece or "fur" lining. I am still traumatized from those big
fur ball hats that with the long string ties with the pom poms on the end. Wearing
a tam that never stayed on your head with matching scarf was another sweet image.
No girl was happy without her winter muff though. Generally rabbit fur, and a
prized possession. They are still made, with a conscience, in faux fur and loved
all the more for it for the newer generations.

Yes B.B. , I well remember S&H Green Stamps. King Kullen, I think, was the major
store that supplied them. The local redemption center was a store on Liberty Ave.
and 121 St.and a family meeting discussed what we would use them for. Whenever
we went there a trip the Kosher dairy , Sam & Joe's (a half block away) was a
must. They carried the best loose cream cheese and chocolate covered graham crackers.
Also on their wall was an autographed photo of a local girl who used to work there
.... Bernadette Peters. Could this have been where Steve Martin came in and asked
for a 'shmear' ?

Upstate Dan, you remembered things I haven't thought of in years. I have some
horrible memories of growing up in Woodhaven, but you reminded me of the good
times. I especially loved the Spring, when the pollywogs would fall to the ground,
the air had that fresh scent, and the trees were a lovely shade of green. I only
go to the old neighborhood to visit my dentist, and I swear I run out of there
like a bat from Hell. The side streets are OK, but the Avenue Trash is worse than
ever..I left ten years ago and never missed the place.
c78
USA - Monday, August 12, 2002 at 01:37:15 (GMT)
Yes Dan, Woodhaven has greatly changed since 1968. There are many sights that
are totally unfamiliar from those days ... a flag from P.R. or Dom. Rep. instead
of the USA ... gold elephants adorning the front porches ... and I'm sure you
would get a strange look if you asked for German potato salad at a bodega today.
There is a certain air of stability on the blocks that have mostly owner occupied
houses. Boarded up houses are rare , instead many are having construction work,
siding, etc. being done. I really don't know how the people there are affording
it (unless they bring in 20 relatives) but by looking at Newsday or Yahoo ,you
can see that most houses there are at least $250,000 and some near $400,00. Puzzles
me ??? Jamaica Avenue is also changed but has almost no empty stores.

Yeah, I'm back. I'll probably rant for a few weeks, then disappear for a year.
So, today is 11 months since we were attacked on the continental US. I'm a bit
disappointed at our President. Not one ground troop....nothing done with Saddam....Yeah,
I know it's going to take time but in my opinion, air strikes on cave dwellers
aren't very effective. We gotta get down and dirty with these guys, and do it
soon. YES, some of our guys will make the ultimate sacrifice, but war is war.
How many of you have noticed the way a lot of the "flag flying" is slowly but
surely diminishing? The flags wear out and are not replaced. Here we go again,
happy in ComplacentLand. PS, I believe Usama B is dead and buried. If he weren't,

>>>>JIM<<<< WOW!!!!! a Wealth of information. (I was kidding about the veal, it

slice memory. That lasted about a week or 2, then they went up to 20, then 25,
then 50...all in a matter of two years. I'm 46 (i think) so I wasn't around when
those houses went up. The ones I remember were around the block from PS 65, then
some on Rockaway Blvd. Hey....Do you remember the dog that was inside the back
room of Niers? All you had to do was walk by outside and that beast would bark
his butt off. Now that Cypress is public again, does the water have a yellow-ish
tint? AND yet another question....You were just there - how would you rate it
compared to say, 1968, using 1968 as an 8? Not the avenue, just the side streets
and general appearence of the houses. How bad is it? Thanx, Jim
Upstate Dan
USA - Sunday, August 11, 2002 at 20:27:41 (GMT)
Dan, sounds like you could use some of those veal cutlets again or bowl a game
or two at Neir's while having some beer and Limberger cheese. The 78 St. butcher
shop was owned by Willie Voekle ... I graduated from STA with his daughter Eileen
... there was also his son, Walter, who owned the first Volkswagen bus in the
neighborhood to make deliveries (around 1960) and Casper was the ass't. butcher.
I guess it was the late 50's that the empty lot across from Neir's ,with weeds
and a broken wood fence was finally cleaned up and brick homes built. Can't forget
the great food at Bruno's and Bella Vista (where Sonny Maione's Mom was waitress
for many years). Sal's was the first 'slice' pizza place I can remember, and it
was at least as low as 15 cents for a while. The Parkway Diner was always a special
family gathering treat on Sunday ... a pot roast dinner with soup and dessert
included was about $1.50. If things were really good that week we could have the
25 cent shrimp cocktail also. The average age in the Parkway was around 65 , with
the women wearing their fancy church hats.I was in Woodhaven several weeks ago
and 2 huge new homes are being built where Al & Phil's gas station was on 90 Ave
and 80 St. A single house is going up at the former Karl's Diner site at Rockaway
Blvd. and 75 St..As we got older , we didn't have to peek into Andy's .... just
play for a softball team that lost to their's and go back after the game to sample
their roast beef and potato salad (Yeah, right). Good news -Cypress Pool is public
again , Bad News is it's a public school now.

little baggie of some of the original crumbs from the '65 Veal Cutlet Festival.
It's going up on eBay soon.....And, if Sotheby's is correct, I should be able
to retire in STYLE. So THERE! Nyah-nah-nah-na-nah-nyahhhhh.

AS: Well, those are MY memories, since I grew up there. If I grew up somewhere
else, they would be my memories of somewhere else. I don't think Patsy the barber
or the Soup Bowl would have been mentioned. Speaking of Pod People....some squatters
have found their way up here and started a tent city. These aren't the kind of
people you normally see up in these hills. Anyhow, there's a big de-tenting party
happening tonight. Wish you could attend, a splendid time is guaranteed for some.
What are you doing home? Shouldn't you be at Mt. Skellington? Or am I speaking

Marge - Shame on you ,that's because you came from that wild east end of Woodhaven
where Segrams 7 was the hot item. My end of town could only afford the 15 cent
beers in Neirs.Recently my wife found a 1969 catering hall ad, which offered a
bottle of scotch or rye on each table plus 'set ups' ... my college educated daughter
had no clue what that was. Regarding the Mother's Day flowers, didn't the pink
or white carnation color as well as wearing it on the left or right side have
to do with if your Mom was still alive?

Wake up! Can't you scroll, dear? Too simple for you? Guess that would solve your
wondering if those are the ONLY memories Boomer has. As for retail sales of cake,
you are the mental midget in this case. No one cares about the foodstuff, just
the time we all discovered it. Memories are nice no matter where you live..including
your obvious home - under a rock. The pink/white thing is morbid, but on a day
when all children wore something it was a sensitive way to to hold your mother
dear. A salute if you will. I can't really imagine anything you hold in high regard,
expect your own bilious thoughts. Maybe someday you will post something you thought
was nice about Woodhaven. Hope somewhere in your life there was something good.

Baby Boomer: Your fond memories of Woodhaven are pretty funny. I'm not sure if
you know it or not, but with MOST of the memories you are recalling, you could
have been ANYWHERE in America! What did you actually think that C&C Cola and Yodels
and hostess cups cakes were ONLY sold in WOODHAVEN?! Are these the ONLY memories
of this crappy little town that you can recall? This is quite a sad situation!
and one more thing, it's pretty morbid about the carnation thing. Kids actually
wore a pink or white carnation depending on if their Mother was alive or dead?
That is just plain SICK!!!!!!!! Now I've NEVER heard of that ANYWHERE but Woodhaven!
That just show's you what kind of place Woodhaven is!

you put money in each week.Having to go get WORKING PAPERS for that underage job.How
cool you were depending on what model Duncan Yo-Yo and what tricks you could do.Crushing

smell on your breath from your parents of underage smoking or drinking. As soon
as they smelt Sen-Sen they knew you were up to something. When we BUILT the 1950's
version of these RAZOR scotters that are popular now out of an old wooden fruit
box,a 2x4, and an old pair of roller skates.( using bottlecaps as decoration)When
the popular thing was these LOOPS of cloth which were woven on a square loom with
hooks to make potholders.Or these long strips of different colored plastic which
were woven to make colorful key holders. That same watered down orange DRINK we
bought in the pizza place called SUN-DEW in cone shaped containers.

remember back in 1915,we had to crawl under our rickety old desks and hide like
scared rabbits,in case the Red Baron would perchance drop a 10 pounder on our
school...Then,in WW II,don't remember much then...must've been the rocks I was
hit in the head with on the way to school...In'52,don't remember much about that
war either...afterall,it is known as the "Forgoten War"...Now,the cold war was
something else...I remember being stuffed under the same old rickety desk as in
WWI,but the big diff this time is that we were also instructed to bend over and
kiss our arses goodbye,or the arse of the person stuffed in front of you...

I was a BIG Dodger fan years ago and my wife gave me a Christmas present of going
to Dodger spring training back in 1989. The bag boy in the supermarket had to
be 75.Do you still have those pictures of your PRIDE and JOY?

B.B. Holman Stadium is five minutes away from the house. I go three times a year
to see the fireworks . That is the extent of the baseball thing. However , it
is a beautiful place to see a game, very family friendly no hassels with anything,
costs like three bucks to get in and the beer is always cold. Thanks for the message
. Later the surf roars.

KAITLYN........WELCOME to WOL !!!Always like to get some new fresh ideas, memories,
or whatever! We OLDTIMERS hog the site at times but when we lived in WOODHAVEN
we couldn't wait to get out of there and into the world NOW we tell stories of
old times.GO FIGURE!!!We have ran across a few old FRIENDS and made some new ones
however. It's amazing how you can mention a name and someone can fill you in on
what they are doing now.So enough of me rattling on,what's Kaitlyn up to?

Kaitlyn - Nobody said this site was just for over 50! Other age groups are free
to, and do, participate all the time. Also if the're happens to be a dearth of
participation at the present time from others, whose fault is that? I personally
like to hear thoughts from those generations removed from me (Lisa, Excluded}.

I also played Rich Haven Little League - Wasn't good enough for majors, played
in minors with Mr. Green's Hawks. We went 18 and 0 and beat the All-Stars. Think
we played at Smokey Oval.

baseball games at Pal's Oval(seems there was other fields also)and the parade
at the beginning of the season.Collecting Dixie cup lids to get a FREE ticket
to see the METS play their first season at the POLO GROUNDS.Listening to Mel Allen
and Red Barber do baseball games and Marty Glickman and Al De Regotis do the football
Giants. When the JETS were kown as the TITANS

I guess I go back a little further, as I remember the air raid drills in 1954
when I was in the second grade at STA. We all had to crouch under the desks while
a nun would pull the window shades all the way down .... this would protect us
if the Russians sent a 20 ton bomb that might land in the schoolyard ... I guess.
