Hello Ken. Bus Driver from Liverpool refers to Matt
Munro, himself. He was originally billed as "the Singing Bus Driver" when he started
his career. He was discovered while driving his regular bus route in Liverpool.
He sang at every stop and did requests for his regulars. He was a handsome guy
that could hold a tune and got lucky. I don't know much more than that, and was
unaware that he died. I used to sing that song to my Mom when I was three or four
years old and it is a sentimental favorite of mine.

Mike G - I have seen and talked to Tom Conway any
number of times in the last 5 yrs or so. He retired from the Navy 'bout 5 yrs
ago, and is now living in Fresno. He's doin' fine. Tish - Matt Monro has been
dead lo these last 15 yrs or so. Tell me what the Bus driver from Liverpool means.
I ask because I am a bus driver in Phoenix. And to he who posted about Moby Grape.
I realize that it seems proper to refer to any band out of the 60's as influential,
but who the hell did Moby Grape ever influence????? Always interested in discussing
music!! Here's one I know i'm gonna get thrown back at me. Walk Away Renee, by
the Left Banke is one of the forgotten songs of the 60's, and it is a truly great
song, with a great feel for the era. Had to say that 'cause I heard it today on
the way home from getting my brains blown out at the casino. Ciao for now

MARGE- Sounds like a great itinerary.I have spent
a short time in that beautiful town of St. Michael's with it's hexagon lighthouse.Assateague
is a spot everyone should try to visit, only 5 hours south of NYC,but another world. This
island ( with bridge access) just south of Ocean City ,Md. is home to several
hundred wild horses which, according to legend, came from horses who swam ashore
when Spanish ships ran aground in storms in the 1600-1700's.Every time I've been
there ,I have easily spotted 20-30 per hour when riding the roads or walking on
the beach. WARNING-don't feed them or you will shortly have 100 as your pals.

LUBBOCK, Texas -- In the end, it was the Three Stooges
who tripped up Patrick Michael Penker. During an identity-fraud scheme that lasted
for several years, Penker used variations of the name of a law firm from a Three
Stooges episode -- "Dewey, Cheatem & Howe" -- to obtain cashier's checks from
banks. Prosecutors said he bilked credit card companies and casinos out of $1
million. It was John Reed, a banker at American State Bank in Lubbock, who became
suspicious about the name and contacted the FBI. "It did seem just a bit unusual
for a company name," Reed said Monday. "Evidently, he fooled a lot of people."
Penker, 54, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court and could get up 40 years in
prison and $1 million in fines. No sentencing date was set.

This is the all-time most popular FAQ at The Barn
Journal. Often the question is posed by a school teacher who has been stumped
by a classroom of precocious 4th graders but recently it was from either a student
or faculty member at Dartmouth. - - Ferrous oxide (rust), a primary component
of red paint, is inexpensive and this appealed to the thrifty farmers of New England
and New York State. Red is the predominant barn color in that region. Natives
of these areas were the early settlers of the Great Lakes states migrating there
via the Erie Canal and the Lakes. I grew up in central Michigan and there were
only a few non-red barns in our area. Two nearby farmers had gray buildings and
soon one of them opted for white, which was also a rare color. I conclude that
the early settlers brought their red barn tradition (and thriftiness) with them,
and this was followed by the later immigrants (Germans in our area) who came directly
from Europe. I believe this red barn tradition is also true in central and northern
Wisconsin and Minnesota. In Michigan, the older three bay English style barns
with gable roofs and built before 1900 were often unpainted and now after a century
of weathering the hard knots stand in relief from the softer clear lumber. Unpainted
barns are generally found in the poorer northern farming regions of the Lake States,
in Appalachia and the South. But how do you explain the predominantly white barns
of Pennsylvania, central Maryland, and the Shenandoah Valley, and those in the
Corn Belt states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa?. The later states are directly
in the path of early Pennsylvania/Maryland migration along the National Road (I-70
today). I’m sure the Germanic farmers of the mid-Atlantic region were no less
frugal than their New England counterparts. Is the answer then less the cheaper
cost of red paint and more ethnic traditions? I believe red and white barns west
of the original thirteen states roughly conform to the path of settlement. One
reader hypothesized that white barns became popular with the beginning of commercial
dairying (as contrasted with subsistence farming) that began with urbanization
and the availability of rail transport after the Civil War. His thesis is that
white suggests the idea of cleanliness and purity—both good associations for milk.
Maybe this was the period when farmers began to annually whitewash interior stable
walls and it was a natural progression to transfer white to the exterior. Although
most barns have either red, white or weathered exteriors, other colors were used
especially at "show farms" that raised horses or purebred livestock. The Hanover
farms in Pennsylvania were yellow, green is found in the Virginia horse country,
and black in Kentucky’s Bluegrass. Trim and ornamentation is a related subject
that should be the subject of a separate article. This would include hex signs,
the owner’s name written by a pattern of different colored roof shingles, Mail
Pouch advertisements, and the cloverleaf and horseshoe symbols that I recall on
the barn doors of central Michigan.

Jim of Mineola: If the relatives could fly, we'd probably
do that. We're now thinkin' bout not coming straight home, but maybe going through
KY or WVA through the mountains, or maybe just going straight to the Eastern shore
of MD where we usually go like St. Michael's, Rock Hall or Annapolis. Maybe we'll
go to Assateague/Chincoteague. Did that a few years ago when we had reservations
at the Outer Banks and a Nor'easter showed up just as we got there. Cancelled
the reservations, had lunch and started back north and landed there. It was nice.
Maybe we'll go to the Outer Banks. We're playing it loose. My sister and kids
went to Ocean City, MD this summer and they loved it. Don't think Mr. Marge would
like it there. Too commercial. You can keep the vinegar on french fries. That's
gross. We'd likely see that on an Anti-Skell menu is my guess.

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) -- Bob Hope has been hospitalized
with pneumonia but is responding favorably to treatment, his publicist said Wednesday.
The 98-year-old comedian admitted himself to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center
on Sunday after having difficulty breathing, according to his spokesman, Ward
Grant. Hope was diagnosed with "mild pneumonia" and is expected to stay at the
hospital for several days, Grant said. "Mr. Hope is responding to treatment,"
said Dr. Lee Kagen, Hope's physician. "His health is improved and he is in stable
condition. We expect to have him home in a few days." Born Leslie Townes Hope
on May 29, 1903, in Eltham, England, Hope's family moved to the United States
in 1907 and settled in Cleveland. He began a career in vaudeville but soared to
international fame with dozens of TV specials and films, most notably his "road
movies" with Bing Crosby. Hope made his last overseas visit to entertain U.S.
troops at age 87, stopping in Saudi Arabia in 1990 during Operation Desert Storm.
He was hospitalized last summer with gastrointestinal bleeding but later recovered.
Although frail from age, he remained in relatively good health throughout the
year, Grant said.

Animal Cruelty is horrible but veganism has to be
the most foolish idea that well-intentioned people have ever tried to hoist on
the American public. If a Palentologist found a human skeleton amongst a bunch
of other animals, he would immediately identify us as an omnivore. Our bodies
are built to process meat, vegetables and dairy products. The average American
eats more meat than his body would like htim to, but that is less damaging than
not eating any meat at all. We are animals, just like hawks, tigers, dogs. We
need meat. And greens and water and oxygen. I think to deny our chemical and dietary
make-up is a pathetic way to feel better about yourself at the expense of common
sense and your own health. Thank you.

Enough with the Hollywood clichés! Here's a starter
list of old saws I NEVER want to see again: 1. A white buddy (previously seen
listening to really Caucasian music, i.e., Chicago, Neil Diamond) is taught by
an African-American buddy how to dance to hiphop, or otherwise act ''down.'' 2.
Extras require only one bullet to be killed. But when the villain is shot multiple
times, he can remain standing for up to a minute, with a ''This can't be happening!''
expression on his face. 3. That said, even after clearly being too wounded to
live, the baddie will still rise for one last attack. 4. A ditzy blonde considered
a fool by her brainiac classmates will ultimately be heralded as a hero when she
solves a complex problem using a fashion metaphor. 5. If the hero is an author,
his novel is always unfinished. However, his ex-wife's hastily written first book
invariably becomes a surprise bestseller. 6. When two people discover someone
who is either collapsed or injured, one will run to him, and yell to the other,
''Get a doctor!'' But the bystander will always react with catatonic whimpering,
moving only when the first yells -- three seconds later -- ''NOW!'' 7. Old men
are either horny or wise. Old women are either horny or senile. 8. When a pretty
woman coughs, she's going to die. 9. Computer hackers are able to type 4,000 words
a minute -- accurately -- always to loud rock and roll music. 10. Authority figures
who keep goofy heroes down will end up covered with liquid or goo. 11. Old mentors
die right when the mentored hero thinks he can't succeed alone. But it's that
very bucket-kicking that motivates him to do so. 12. When a hero says he is going
on ahead to check something out, and tells his accompanying small child to stay
put, the kid will never do so, inevitably sparking the need for rescue. 13. Mute
children will suddenly be able to speak at the behest of a mysterious stranger,
but only when the stranger is about to depart. 14. In post-''Scream'' horror movies,
characters stepping into dark hallways will savvily reference other horror flicks,
saying, ''This is the part of the movie when the guy gets killed by an axe''...and
then they won't be. However, every OTHER killing in the film will be utterly typical
of past slasher movies. 15. In a fight, being kicked in the groin is only a momentary
setback. I can not stress this enough: This is just not true. So, which clichés
do you never want to see again?

C L A R E M O N T, Calif., Aug. 29 — Rodney King was
arrested Tuesday morning and charged with being under the influence of the psychedelic
drug PCP. Police said King was arrested at about 7:30 a.m., when he told a hotel
clerk his car had been stolen. The clerk called police to report the alleged theft,
but also told them King was acting strangely. "Mr. King wasn't violent at the
location, but he did display some objective symptoms of PCP intoxication," said
Claremont police Lt. Gary Jenkins. While police were in the process of arresting
King, his girlfriend drove up in the car that he was attempting to report stolen,
Jenkins said. "It turned out he became a little bit confused about where his car
was and where his girlfriend was and it wasn't exactly stolen," said Jenkins.
King was taken to Pomona Valley hospital for medical clearance, and then to jail,
he said. He was released and given a citation to appear in court. If convicted,
he faces up to 90 days in jail. King's 1991 arrest and police beating, videotaped
and shown on national television, sparked riots and unrest in Los Angeles a year
later, when four white officers accused of beating him were not convicted. Two
officers were later found guilty of federal charges of violating King's civil
rights.

Need reasons to give up animal products? Consider
the recent comments on the Senate floor of Senate Robert Byrd, "Our inhumane treatment
of livestock is becoming widespread and more and more barbaric. 600 pound hogs…raised
in two foot wide metal cages, in which the poor beasts are unable to turn around
or lie down in natural positions…veal calves are confined to dark wooden crates
so small that they are prevented from lying down or scratching themselves. The
creatures feel…they suffer pain just as we humans suffer pain. Egg-laying hens
are confined to battery cages. Unable to spread their wings, they are reduced
to nothing more than an egg-laying machine." In reference to slaughterhouse cruelties,
Byrd stated, "these animals are sometimes cut, skinned and scalded while still
able to feel pain…animal cruelty abounds. It is sickening. It is infuriating."

Folk mass was a travesty! I disliked it when I was
a kid, and luckily have never come across it again. I love the choir and sang
in them for many years (even when I was no longer participating in the service
below). The tradition and stability can be a comfort. I too, have gone to other
sources and eliminated nothing during a spiritual journey. I do not hold Catholicism
as an exact perfect science, but after I stopped being so angry I could see the
value. I seldom attend Mass, but when I do it means something good. There are
so many ways to enlightenment, and occasionally, God. As for children playing
during the service, I have not seen that one! A church I occasionally attend sends
a nun to each aisle to collect children for a special mass upstairs...the children
are returned to the aisle with their family in time for communion, and the rituals
that immediately precede it. Seems to work nicely.

Tish: Besides the unanswered questions in the Catholic
religion especially, I hated what they did to the mass. The guitars really turned
me off. Religion to me is tradition. How can it be the same religion when so much
of it has changed. Unlike the Catholic religion the Jewish religion never loses
their tradition. And, talk about losing respect. People going to church in sneakers,
shorts etc., kids running rampant in the ailes, playing with toys. Drives me crazy!
I also started losing it when my mom got cancer the second time and a very close
friend died in '88 at 42 of cancer and I watched it all in horror. That's when
I started with the questions and no answers. When my friend died, I started getting
involved with life-after-death (reincarnation) because of the episodes I was having
involving my friend. I read some books and even went to a chanel. My sister came
with me and even she was amazed at what came from this chanel that the person
could not have known about this friend and our relationship. And, the more I got
into it, the more answers I found. And ones that actually made sense. To each
his own, however. But I found much comfort in it during the loss and for myself
too. It explained a lot of things that have happened to me over the years. So,
who knows. But, it works for me. I still get some old feelings though when, on
those rare occasions, I do go to church.

Religion Is A Mind Control/Tish: Didn't realize it
at the time, but everyone seems to feel they were brainwashed. I loved it too
much at the time to feel that way. I loved the structure, the nuns, the whole
thing, the mass and communion every day. REENIE and others talked about FKL. Went
there too and hated it. Some nice things like my Modern Dance class, some special
teachers, but hated it. School was tough for me generally, but I cried my first
day there because we'd heard so many rumors about the racial problems, that were
all true, by the way. I have nighmarish stories about that place. The days I couldn't
use the bathrooms because there had been a stabbing of a black girl by a blonde
so the message was out, on paper, that any blonde (of which I'm one) caught alone
in the halls would get it. So, my friends and I held bathroom duty until we all
got home. My dad used to watch 3-4 girls running up to our bathroom after school
and wonder what was going on until my mom explained it to him. (And, by the way,
I'm not prejudice here guys. One of my best friends for 35 yrs, met on my first
full-time job, was at my first wedding, is black. I love her dearly.) You could
have been the fifth person in the lunch line, but within a few minutes you were
25th in line. And, try and stop it. We had kids running though the lunch room
with hatchets, teachers set on fire, teacher's desks thrown into the courtyard.
There were kids spiking their fruit with booze, girls putting razor blades in
their fro so if the teacher grabbed their hair they'd be cut. This was not the
place for a quiet, shy, catholic school girl, but I didn't want to travel on 2
buses to get to either of the 2 Catholic Schools I made. It was a nightmare. And,
this was in 1961-65. By the time I left there, cops were walking the halls with
dogs and were stationed outside too. In senior year went on Co-op (work one week
and school one week and no homework) and loved it once I got out into the working
world. One of the happiest days of my life was graduating from FKL. STA was a
dream compared to that. I still think the respect was better, and better the kids
have some, I repeat, some respect/fear of teachers (not that teachers should hit)
rather than the teachers having fear of the kids...as is today, in some cases.
RESPECT, for others, things, self...really lacking in today's society.

Jerry Lewis' Stalker Found Dead LAS VEGAS - A convicted
stalker accused of repeatedly threatening comedian Jerry Lewis was found dead
Saturday in his jail cell. Police said it appeared Gary Randolph Benson, 57, died
in his sleep at the Clark County Detention Center. He was found at 1:48 a.m. The
coroner's office is still to determine the cause of death. Benson, of Sheridan,
Wyo., was accused of sending Lewis a letter last year reading: ``Dear Jerry. Your
Dead. Your friend, Gary Benson.'' He was facing a Nov. 12 trial on charges he
violated a protective order and stalked Lewis. His June trial was delayed when
a judge ordered Benson to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Benson, a diagnosed
schizophrenic, had already served six years for stalking Lewis. He was released
from prison eight months before Lewis received the threatening letter.

Not preaching Marge, but there have been huge changes
in the Catholic Church in the past few decades. Each ten years gone by brings
enormous differences, and you may find many of the clergy ready to answer the
hard questions. I was surprised - shocked - to find refreshingly open minds and
spirited conversation, not just dogma (not that there's anything wrong with that
;) I think the church knows all about the generations of people it repelled and
is trying hard to meet the people and accept their way of life now. I do miss
the nun's outfits though, and still get excited when I see a "real" nun in full
drag. I never fail to say "Good Morning, Sister" - hilarious to see their expressions
of "Do I KNOW you?". You can take the girl out of the church....

I do not remember Sr Virginia, but I do remember Wilfred,
did she become principle at some point? - One incindent I recall, but not the
nun involved. One of the boys came to school WITHOUT HIS UNINFORM PANTS (Blue?),
he had on a pair of brown, (what a memory) anyway SHE lit into him so bad, his
explanation was Mom didn't get a chance to do the wash or something, SHE made
him go home, and I don't think he came back that day. Wasn't catholic school fun!!!
- If you didn't have 90 or above average, (naturally their favorites) you become
fodder for those nuns to put you down and intimadate. A little tooooo self-righteous
for me. But I guess that's what Catholicism is all about. Thanks but no thanks.
I had a friend who went to St. Luke's on 85th St. and I always felt sorry for
her because she was not Catholic. Talk about brain washing. I guess the nuns accomplished
their mission on me. Thank goodness for FK Lane, helped me see a whole new world.

5) Jean Paul 6) Rose AGAIN! 7) Janet Marie 8) Sr. Pascal - I don't remember a
Sr Rosemary. But there were a few grades that had more than 1 class I think. And
by time we were in HS, I known St. Michael taught at St. Michael's in East New
York.

AKA- We have mentioned this before that since I started
high school in 1960 the price of a subway token and a slice of pizza have almost
always been the same.Maybe the Warren Commission should look into that conspiracy.

something about JeanPaul, did seemed strange. The term I heard used was "She seems

But, I didn't get into STA until 5th grade. Had Miss Dillon for that class, then
Sr. Rosemary for 6th and Sr. Janet Marie 7th & 8th. Haten Sr. Rosemary (is it

Mr. Blonde, complete with razor blade in hand, is coming out just in time for

get the entire set, which includes plastic versions of Tarantino (Mr. Brown),
Harvey Keitel (Mr. White), Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink) and Tim Roth (Mr. Orange).
Also available is Madsen's victim: the cop he tortured while playing "Stuck in

Reenie: Next time I see her I'll ask if she remembers
that. We've been seeing her in April for a class reunion. I don't recall her ever
hitting a girl. I remember that being a real fact at the time. However, maybe
that girl you mentioned really did something terrible. Terrible at that time is
good behavior today. I had Sr. Rosemary in 6th and she pulled my hair once for
not writing my "r" properly. She was awful. I adored Sr. Janet and always looked
up to her. Didn't realize what an influence she was on me until a few years ago
at the STA reunion for all. She's always so positive and looking for the good
in someone. A truly good soul. However, I had a very close friend in 7th & 8th
grade (we had Sr. Janet both years) and she said Sr. intimated her and she doesn't
have great memories of her. So, everyone gets someting different out of situations.
I still over her.

Sr. Janet Marie must have mellowed, if my math is
correct, but that was never my strong subject, a few years prior to you guys have
her - she wallopped a girl in my class, and it was not me, but I will not say the
name. I can still picture what happened. It was in the "Roosevelt" balcony, cannot
recall why we were there, but this person must have really pissed her off, and
wack. I don't think anyone in the class spoke another word for the entire day.

I can attest to Jim of Mineola's statement about Sr. Pascal. She does look exactly
the same. She's lost her voice however, and it's hard to hear what she's saying.

Can't believe we both moved so far from NY and we
only lived a mile or two from each other. Friends from there have been trying
to get me to come back for a visit and I can't seem to break loose. Maybe in a
month or two.

"I would feel like a success if I walked by a schoolyard
and I heard kids going around a jump rope with one of my songs and they'd changed
the words. 'Cos the real test of a song is if it can be a song for all seasons,
in lots of different circumstances. I heard "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
a coupla days back. This woman, this bald woman, wearing nothing but a blanket,
on the D-train, smoking a cigar, with a bottle of sour mash and a New York Post.
She was singing: "Raindrops… ya fuckin' mother… keep falling on my head… ya little
cunt, ya pig… but that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be… what the fuck, ya fucker…"
And then she just went out. Boom. I never liked that Bacharach tune before but
now it's become a song for me. I'd never heard it handled in quite that way."
Tom Waits is cool and NYC is scary!

a teenager were like dogs in heat. Now I'm lucky if one can keep it up long enough
to please me better than I can please myself!

O.J. SET TO SLAY 'EM AS HOST OF RAP SHOW By BILL HOFFMANN
Florida is getting ready for a killer hip-hop show tonight - as O.J. Simpson hosts
a star-studded rap concert. The shamed football great will introduce such acts
as Wyclef Jean, Foxy Brown and Lil' Mo at the Teco Arena in Estero. He'll also
sign footballs and launch them into the crowd. Concert promoter Steven Marcano
defended the choice of host, saying it's not his place to judge Simpson. "If 12
people didn't convict him, whatever I believe, if he's right or wrong, I believe
it's not my job to judge anybody. The people who judged him acquitted him," Marcano
told the Naples News.

Well WOL'rs - just came back from Bob Dylan concert
in Sun City (yeah, that part kind of bothers me also}. The man really can't sing
much anymore, and he's got so many wrinkles in his face, that, when he takes a
shower, none of the water reaches the floor. Let me tell you though, HE IS STILL
THE MAN!. He brought the place down. Three encores - Crowd standing up steady
after first couple of songs. Ageless crowd - couldn't put any kind of number on
average age - they all love him. Absolutely no repartee with the audience, But
AH! The songs, the beautiful, glorious, mystifying cryptic songs. We won't see
his like again, as a songwriter. Stay Forever Young Bob Pls. Rich - What do u
mean I can't hit your curve. Bring it on! Ron Iazetta - now there's a name from
my past. Most lovable bullshit artist I ever knew. You always knew he was bullshitting
you, but you got over it 'cause he was such a good, fun guy. His mom and dad Sam
and Kay were a piss also. He brought me all the way up to Peekskill N.Y. one weekend
on the pretext of playing some guys in stickball, for money. We never played stickball,
but there was a party and he wound up getting laid, which I'm sure was the plan
all the time. Guess he just wanted me along for the ride. Needless to say, I didn't
wind up getting
